Like a lot of these videos I’m a bit late, but I rewatched this video this evening, and realised I had a couple of cheap spanners in the garage after all, so I went in there (my hideaway!) and modified the 13mm ring. Not entirely successful, but I usually have to ‘have a go’ once so that I can more fully understand the instructions! It’s working, it needs fine tuning but it’s working. If it goes well I might manage with the 13mm, but I have a 14mm in case I need to reset the project. Thanks Felix, you’re a gem! Les in UK 🇬🇧
Thanks again for one more inspiring idea on video. Being a steel guy, I like to suggest some ideas to improve the tool. You could also start with a straight double ring wrench acc. to DIN 837 B / ISO 3318. Then one wrench might be good for two carving tools of different size. Also, you can bend the ring to the desired angel after heating the bending spot until it's glowing bright red. Heating the ring to the same glowing color for 10 minutes in charcoal fire in your grille and letting it cool down slowly will soften the steel and make the file work easier. When your done with coarse sharpening, just heat it up again to red glow and quench it in cold water to harden the steel. With some luck you reach 55 HRC with allows higher sharpness and better edge retention. Don't do the heat treatment with a soldering torch or other blue flame to avoid decarbonization of the outer steel layers.
Dear Brother Felix, I used to collect antique rifles. I have made gun parts from hard steel. By hand. Diamond files were a godsend! Patience. Slow but sure patience. I can see myself in making this tool. I have made many a spoon from wood, starting at age 12. I am now 68. Another genius course. I need to start buying your books! Only the best from the best, Mr. Felix Immler, the Swiss Genius!
@@FelixImmler Mr. Immler, there is none on the internet as innovative and happy with their teaching their innovation as you. The perfect match is a Felix Immler with a Swiss Army Knife given problem to solve. Then teaching us how you did it. There is no better ambassador for Victorinox and for all of Switzerland than you! Bravo!
I LOVE that you have demonstrated how to make this with the most basic of tools! Anyone can do this with power tools but when tools are limited, it's a new challenge! So happy that I stumbled across your video, thank you from the USA!
I modified the screwdriver/bottle opener to a chisel on my Hercules Victorinox and it works great! Now I will attack this project. Thanks a lot again for a great video! My quality of life in the woods is better thanks to you! 👍
This is such a cool idea 💡 and like the project I have a lot of old wrenches 🔧 and many duplicates 😊and Sunday is my bushcraft day too make cool things so it’s now on my bucket list of projects to do thanks to you and your amazing ideas 👍keep rocking the videos 👊
I have seen these plenty of times before on channels that just show the tool being made. BUT what I really liked was that you explained the things to pay attention to and Best practices to get the best results. Great job as usual. And if you are doing things with hand tools, you better have lots of patience, things dont happen fast with hand tools, but you get to learn the process much more in detail.
Greetings Felix. I've been a follower of your videos for many years. Well done. Always interesting. Have you ever thought about making a very small spoon carving tool from a 6- or 8-mm wrench? One that fits in the side or back elastic pocket of a bushcraft sheath. I think it would be a popular and useful video. Thanks again for your great videos.
It is funny that I came across this video as I was scrolling through your channel as I had this same idea about two years ago and did this to three different sizes of wrenches that I picked up at a flea market for a little bit of nothing. I used a die grinder and rotary files to do the bulk of the mterial removal, then hand files, wet/dry sandpaper and round honing stones. I put an adge on both sides of mine to make them more versatile
I have 3 old wrenches I'll be transforming into these spoon and bowl carving tools...3/4-12mm-22mm should give a good start on learning how to make one! Thanks so much for sharing this knowledge with us! Cheers, Jerbs 👍🏼🔥🔪🇨🇦
This is a great idea. It makes being able to fit the size of carving tool to the size you need. A small one would make small projects easier to do and larger ones would work for large projects.👏👍🧐
We like your videos very much. This one gives an idea for gifts for friends and something to do with all those metric wrenches I bought on my trip to Europe.
Gud'n Felix! Notiz an mich, Kauf endlich neue Feilen!
What about new/cheaper wrenches? I don't know how it is in Europe, but in the U.S.A. most modern wrenches seem to be cheap Chinese steel that is drop forged, with a rough/crackly finish on the outside. Are those crappy wrenches good enough to use?
( hab mal an knochentrockener Buche getestet ).
This is great info for a retired mechanic with several worn out wrenches and lots of time on his hands. I seem to spend most of my free time making wood working tools so maybe I was a better former mechanic a
Wow honestly, I was going to look into the internet to buy a carving knife for spoons. You have now saved a lot of trouble as I can find a spare ring spanner in my workshop and convert it into a spoon carving knife. Thank you sir! Thanks a lot!
Just don't use your file like that, because you're going to dull it's teeth. Always use your files in forward motion, not back and forth like how we use saws. That means, that if you do it like on video, it will cost you more, than what the knife costs, because dull file teeth, means dead file and good files cost.
Fantastic video,, I'm straight away, going to my shed, to find an old ring spanner, ha ha..
