I’m 22 & got a plumbing laborer job 8 months ago, now I’m getting my apprentice card soon. Didn’t expect to love plumbing but showed up every day & now I’m running waters, doing finishes, water heaters, ground roughs, vent work, DWV etc. best decision I made was going into plumbing & my goal is to be a master to own my own company. Great vid Roger learning a lot on your channel thanks dude.

the key to making excellent money as a plumber or any trade is to work on your off time. Something simple as changing a toilet after work for 30mins is a quick $200, or spending the weekend doing a house reno moving drains and water pipe and such can be an easy $10,000 job. Thats how its done

Hello Mr. Wakefield, IDK if you remember me but I finally got a job as an apprentice. I'm got into construction plumbing finishouts. $20 an hour, and I'm green as green could be. I just got done with my first week. It's hard work, real hard. But when I get home dirty as hell, tired, and sore. But I also feel good about myself in a way I haven't felt much in my life.

I appreciate your professional advice. I was trained and worked for an old school Plumber in California for 10 years. We also pulled permits on everything required. I wondered why no one else pulled permits. I now have a deeper appreciation for why he did it. Your explanation of the culture it develops and sense of doing it right every time plus it protects your business really struck home.
The company I work for now doesn’t have that culture and sense of pride. I still do, and maybe a bit slower to get jobs done. But, I take pride in my work and spend the time to do it right.
Someday I plan on doing my own Plumbing business.

High school drop out, started in the trade with my grand pop and uncle at 9 years old, I took my lumps in the trade and I have owned my own business since 2008. You can make great money but you sacrifice a lot of family and free time for that. I’m basically always on call. I enjoy my job and can’t see myself ever doing anything else. There is a massive shortage of plumbers which allows me to work for who I want. I am fair with my pricing but I do not barter: I’m good at what I do and I have over 3 decades of experience. Never sell yourself short. That person who you let best you up on your price is not going to help you when you need to get your knees scoped or any of the other issues that working in the trades does to your body.

It’s fun you get to work on your own time but the faster you get it done the higher your average is. We do two story 4-5 bath basements, finished or unfinished, in a day and a half. We run pvc, uponor pex, and black steel pipe (no trac pipe).

I'm not a plumber (my brother is) and we just started a service only plumbing business together. I own other business's in insurance and finance and even in those industries we're stepping away from commission base in favor of a more stable, higher hourly base. These changes come from 1. Finding many employees just are not as incentivized as once might hope with commission and 2. We risk our integrity. Are we truly listening and addressing the customers needs or are we trying to sale hard and push goods or service that's not right for the client. At the end of the day it boils down to making the right choice for your business model and what route fits your method of management. Great video!

I learned every phase of plumbing, underground, above slab and top out. Then I got a med gas license. I also worked for a company brazing big copper lines, 3'' and bigger for heating and chill and heating water. I have piped chillers/boilers/air handlers and cooling towers. In my early 50's I took a job with a municipal water department. I was bored out of my mind ! I took the first offer I got form a mechanical contractor. I'm in my late 50's and still work in the field. I tried the office a couple of times but it just wasn't for me. I love this trade and it's paid me well. Me and my wife's income together have been in the $100 thousand a year club for a while.and we both have pensions and pretty fat 401K's. It's hard work, thats why it pays good. We pay 18% up to 30% commission of the net. Commission keeps techs responsible, and more focused on their job, since any callbacks that should occur, their going back out on their dime. It also tends to take the techs mind to “this isn’t my job, it’s my career” mindset since it’s technically up to them how much money they can make. Another good point is that if techs are paid hourly, and their weekly pay is hurting for what ever reason, it removes the mentality of “I’ll just take my time and drag my job out to make more money by getting overtime.” Commission base pay prevents them from taking company profits on that job.

I price all my jobs out “by the job”. Showing labor plus materials, at times will concern the customer. Especially if the job runs into break and or lunch.
Pricing by the job some times is a problem to. If a technician comes in and changed out two toilets, test them and is down within an hour or two. With the service call is between 4 and 5 hundred dollars. The costumer does understand, they have paid for a professional service, not an hourly rate.

Views existing raypac hi-efficentcy boiler, brings out a pair 440-channel locks, proceeds to tap near the thermocouple area, within the rubber handle side of his channel locks. Raypac turns on, he then waits approx 20-minutes to assure raypack boiler continues to function. Post the total 30-minutes involved, hands the invoice to the owner. Owner says man that is out there within price being 8,000 dollars, towards a half hour tapping side within raypack boiler, plumber response in return, it's not the actual time, and-or tapping with channel locks, it's knowing where within location just where to tap it.

Plumbing is such a great career to get into, that's why it was so hard for me to leave the trade. Now, I do robotics and some engineer work for a very popular company. It pays more than plumbing if you are a employee. If you own your own business, anything is possible with the correct mindset and ethics of the way you work.

Either way it's a learning curve like you said and a good service man now not all plumbers are good service plumbers it takes personality and knowing how to communicate effectively with people not everyone has that ability it doesn't mean they are not good plumbers when put on a job to rough in say or top outs we call them here but they just don't have the right personality for service work some guys let's face it can be a little rough around the edges but a great employees and great plumbers how do you put them on commission or book pricing if you only do service work then I guess those guys need to find a different employer but the bottom line is the holiday inns and such other buildings have to be plumbed and there's a lot of work in a hotel like that to be done every room has a bathroom and some much more than just that do you even bid on those jobs or say no thanks I don't want to do those jobs it doesn't pay right now today draws are set up according to scheduling and inspections etc it's not an easy trade no matter how you look at it it takes a lot of work to run a successful business of any kind and if anyone tells you it's gonna be easy money they are lying to you that's in any business so if you have a strong work ethic and want to succeed by all means go get it cuz like Roger said it can be done but don't think your gonna make a million bucks over night be prepared for a hard long work day and if you put the time in it will pay off

@Steven Vanderheide when I started up I didn’t have any money put up for it. I did have a van, sewer machines, hand tools, and a cell phone. I started out by doing everything myself. When I got so busy I couldn’t keep up I hired another plumber to run all the calls. I caught all the work he couldn’t get to and started networking to make the phone ring more. When I got so busy we couldn’t handle it all I hired someone else and started again. Networking is how I grew my business so fast bit.ly/rogersfreeguide Look at this and see if it helps you. If you already have a book of work and need people to do it I would figure wages for about 3 months in the bank plus some operating capital.

Wages as a plumber in Australia is garbage. You must work for your self.
