Eggs are super expensive right now because in 2012 the Government changed the animal welfare laws to outlaw battery cages, at the time 80% of eggs were laid in battery cages, so they allowed a ten year transition. Farmers started converting to colony cages or free range, but faced council planning consent delays lasting years, and in 2017 the Australian supermarket duopoly decided to implement their own rules banning anything but free range, after a third of the farmers had already converted to colony (some farms having spent $60million on the change already, others stuck with land shortages). Thus New Zealand is short about half a million laying hens or roughly 15-20%

In New Zealand, that fruit you called 'kiwi' is called 'kiwifruit'. It is actually illegal to eat kiwis in New Zealand, if you see what I mean.

@@BeingBedingfield You should try one of the Asian Supermarkets. PakNSave, New World, and Four Square are all owned by Food Stuffs, while Countdown, Super Value and Fresh Choice are all owned by Woolworths, both large Australian conglomerates facing legislation under the Grocery Industry Competition Bill after various allegations and massive profits. There's also a lot of South African butchers in Auckland (especially East and North Auckland) if you get homesick.
