Thanks so much for this. I went from on the fence with my blackbox to making it the focus of my setup. Had no clue it could do this and it makes it so much more fluid to quickly log ideas. .
Aw yeah! I have that exact controller and I love how lightweight and compact it is, while still being really high quality. I just bought a Deluge and I’m trying to work out whether I still want to keep the blackbox or not. When I did have these set up, I had 12 pads set up to control 4 loops. For each loop: one pad to clear, one pad to record, one pad to play/stop. This way you have full control over your loops during a performance. I also had loops pre-set to different lengths. This way I could choose which length loop I wanted to record. And you can always make loops shorter than their pre-set length by pressing the record-pad while it’s recording. I really loved that you can set the loop quantization as well: I always set mine to two bars, which gave me a lot more room to press pads in advance
@@tjguardino The Deluge in its current iteration (with OLED screen, grid view and lots of community firmware features) is an absolute beast. But while recording clips in it is extremely fast, it doesn’t have loop quantization, the ability to just let a loop run completely separately from the sequencer and some other features that make looping on the blackbox so incredibly smooth. It’s a tough choice!
I really like that controller. While I have a Beatstep I can use, I prefer the 4x4 layout and the sensitivity looks nice. I would be interested in knowing your finger drumming setup. I have a Roland MV-1 with the same pad layout, so might make me a better finger drummer. On a side note, what is your Stomp preset like that you use for bass. I really need to get that going on my Helix so I can swap between guitar and bass that fast. Great content. Keep it up!
Thanks!! I’ll have to do a finger drumming video soon and I’ll do a video on that bass patch too with a link to download. The short story: it’s an octave down effect through the B-15 amp with a little compression :)
oh come on now dude, killed it with this vid. i've always wanted to give a blackbox a go especially since you can pre determine loop lengths so you dont have to worry about closing the loop like with a regular looper. the only other question now is how can you adapt a midi foot pedal so you dont have to launch the loop with your hands (thats always the hard part)
@@minimal3734 yeah i noticed the record only triggered at the start of a loop, helpfull indeed, hands free would still be better for guitarists. but this is still a very VERY good option compared too a lot of other offerings. man ,around 5 years ago i was looking for a loop pedal that had pre determined loop lengths and a few other specific requirements, only thing i could find was a elektron octatrack which i've been using as my looper, haha overkill i know, but it works great
Adding a midi foot pedal isn't too difficult! The blackbox manual has an overview of the messages it expects (as shown in this video) and you'll just need to set your midi pedal to send these notes. The midi pedal can be either hardware midi (TRS/DIN5) or USB. It would work identically to the controller in this video! You can set up the blackbox to record immediately when a button/footswitch is pressed, but sadly it's not able to then set the tempo and loop length according to the first loop recorded so I don't think it will be able to really ever work like a standard guitar looper in that way.
I've watched it over and over but I can't figure out how you have your recording set up for the initial drum part. Are you recording that as a sample? It looks like you are creating an individual sequence for each drum pad, live. How in the world are you doing that?!

That’s so cool, I’m glad to hear this helped!! Thanks for watching 🙌

Ahh that’s awesome! The Deluge looks really cool, I’ve gotta try one!

Nice video, your finger drumming skills are impressive. But what's more impressive is that the video runtime is 1010 👍
Lolol ah yes I totally planned that 😅😅😅 thanks for watching!!!
Nice groove
Thanks for watching!!
Nice finger drumming skills 🎉
Thanks!!! 🙌⚡️💯
Actually it looks like your finger drumming setup/style makes a lot of sense. Would love to see you cover it!
Thanks for watching, I’ll definitely put it on the list!

Much appreciated!!

The recording (and playing) only starts after a qantized period that you can set for the pad. So there is plenty of time to get ready.
Thanks so much :) Excellent question! That would be amazing, might need to experiment with that a bit!

I have a different sample on each pad, and I’m recording all of them together onto one single sequence in the Blackbox!
@tjguardino Thank you, sir! I will give that a shot. I just recently got my BB and I'm still learning my way around.
Where do those drum sounds come from? (subbed)
Thank you!! They’re samples I made with Addictive Drums by XLN Audio :)
How do you make the guitar sound like bass?
I’m doing a video on that very soon! Short story: octave down effect into a bass amp emulation!
potentially dumb question -- how are you running the guitar into the blackbox?
No dumb questions! I’m running a stereo quarter inch out of the HX Stomp into a stereo 1/8th inch cable that’s going into the Blackbox
