      Sean are you available for private training? My daughter is a Div1 thrower...first year throwing weight - only throwing it 4 months. Can hit 16.8 consistently but can throw 19M but fouls every throw?

    Great video. Putting on my structural engineer hat, you got all the mechanics spot on. I'm a masters thrower, been throwing the weight for 10 years, but have not been ever able to get an effective pitch start to work for me, hence I wind, even the 56# superweight. A video showing how to get an effective pitch (or bump) start would be fantastic.

    Great stuff Sean, thanks for the tips. Making a comeback after a 30 yr lay off for the Masters next year ( nudging 57 yrs old) I throw the weight throw for the first time ever 2 weeks ago, threw 17.85 m then on the 3rd throw tripped and broke 2 ribs. Just makes me more motivated to kick this things arse next time and your tips will go a long way.

    The winds do provide the horizontal velocity component (actually the only chance a thrower has to develop horizontal velocity) to the horizontal+vertical velocity compendium that makes the release velocity. During the turns, velocity development is by far on the vertical. Therefore, the winding or preliminary phase should be better appreciated.

    Us Irish folk still throw Weight for Distance (one-handed) and Weight for Height, both similar to Highland Games events at provincial and national level. Not exactly the "wammer" that you are talking about but I wish we done that here

    We throw it in the UK outdoors...especially in throws pentathlons..I'm originally from Michigan. I've just started throwing weight last year...still don't know how to do turns in weight or hammer. So if you don't do the spins yet and only do a standing throw with the weight would you recommend doing it over your head then?

    Good stuff Sean.. I enjoy watching your technical analyses and Q&As... I agree with everything you pointed out, but unfortunately I feel like I find myself in the minority, even amongst coaches, on a lot of these points..It seems like the biggest thing I argue with other coaches about is ball path (orbit) progression. I hear it all the time too: "man, if your guys would just get an orbit on that throw, it would go so much further." where my response is normally something along the lines of "It's about ball speed, man. Can't accelerate the ball on a steep ball path."Keep up the good work, and keep these great videos coming!

    I just started and I go to the gym but I’m weak at that throw, hurts my ego but I’m wanna learn and get better at it. Our high school only does weight throw and keep saying the hammer throw is for college and I say that’s bullshit and we should practice that instead, because doing the weight throw, yes it’s cool, but it feel unnatural. Man we really need a couch like you in the New York’s Armory, they couches teach beginners the wind up turn on the elbows rather than the spin which is harder, they basically teach us a useless movement

    I wish I had this shit (youtube) back in my day. All East IC4A URI 98-99 as So. 58 and change. Was a total what you refer to as a dragger, totally two turn muscled it out there with crap technique. You make so much sense I subbed and might start that masters competing as I'm an old man now. I just wish I knew this stuff back then. Keep laying on the knowledge brother. Also are you familiar with Jake Freeman NYAC? Threw against him in HS before he became a beast. Go get the US some medals, it seems like the US is definitely getting better as I seem to see numerous 250ft Hammer throwers now. Back then it was Deal and that's it. Dude this zen shit is like crack, keep making these. Thank you much.

      @@SDthrows Ty for your replies, real last name Abilheira. Might as well give you the real name in appreciation for the knowledge bombs. I will be rooting for you and your team. Although I must say I favor Hammer, with women's high jump and pole vault next ;) I'm sure the gophers had better than URI and damn did we have some good ones. I loved Indoor practice, our circle had the Pole Vault practice area right behind it, if you catch my drift. sorry for the rambling but your series is bringing back some good memories. Those freakin spandex.....damn. TY and I realize how lucky I am to have discovered your channel and your willingness to share this phenomenal information for all throwers! I will try to share with my HS Track coach if I can get a hold of his contact info as I have moved to FL from RI. He is still at my HS I know that and you could be responsible for some future HS state champs. Cheers.

    Sean, when you are throwing the weight, are you actively thinking about moving the weight out to the left? Also, not sure if you have ever tried, but what would you guess your PR would be with a two turn weight and a sling start. Thanks and loved the video

    Are there any benefits at all to winding the weight

    • @SDthrows
      @SDthrows  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure

    • @andym.900
      @andym.900 ปีที่แล้ว

      The winding phase is the only opportunity the thrower has to develop horizontal velocity as far as the implement itself. During the turns, speed development is mostly on the vertical. Therefore, since the release velocity is a combination of vertical AND horizontal velocity, the role of the winds cannot be underestimated. That is, taking it too easy during the wind (s) may not be a good idea.
