My theory is that Art Adams puts so much effort and time into the cartooning that once he finishes an issue or a cover, he's physically and mentally exhausted. I actually got to watch him draw at Dragon Con back in 1997. It was a slow part of the day in Artists' Alley when most people were at the big panels. I didn't really want a sketch for myself. I was working on trying to improve my craft and asked if I could just watch him draw for a few minutes to see if I might pick up anything through osmosis. He graciously let me. He was doing a "simple" 3/4 headshot of Batman for a fan... no bigger than a a single panel of a six-panel grid... and he he had started 15 minutes earlier! He was calculated with every ink mark he made. He even did a FULL blue pencil under-drawing! When i asked him why he didn't just knock one out with a sharpie like everyone else, he said that he just couldn't. His mindset wouldn't allow him.

One of my favorite annuals: ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #1 - John Byrne and Art Adams "Cry Vampire" - You can't go wrong with Superman and Batman fighting vampires!

Had to buy a reading copy of that just to manhandle the book by poring through it constantly.

Flesk Publications is planning a Monkeyman and O’Brien collection. The Art of Arthur Adams is at an Asian printer now.

There were Monkeyman and O'Brien action figures. Toybiz Legends did an indie comics line including Ann Obrien, and Mad Man. Monkey Man was the 'Build A Figure' with one piece per character in the line.

There was a Gen13 - Monkeyman & O'Brien mini, drawn (but not inked) by Art Adams. I don't remember if they addressed the Fairchild/Ann O'Brien redhead Amazon issue directly.

Never heard of it til now, added it to a long long list of comics I want, it is Art Adams and a giant monkey and a chick, good enough for me. LOL

I bought these book exclusively for Monkeyman & O'Brien. Hellboy was just incidental to me.

Arthur Adams did Danger Girl also and ultimate X would love to see you guys do either one of those

It's fascinating you bring up Gen 13 Fairchild, my first thought was John Byrne's super strong redhead Babe also from 1994. As Ed says, it was just time.

I always thought that there was a connection between this series and DC's Angel and the Ape but I'm guessing it's just an odd coincidence

I personally love it. The right mix of adventure and easy to follow story.

Do yall have the dark horse extra comics that finished the story? Cause it got kinda spicy later and i always wanted to see the end.

Art's pencils for the New Mutants Annual are included (four per page) as an extra in the newest X-Men Omnibus, along with his Longshot thumbnails. The pencils look like finished inks.

I love Monkeyman and O'Brien! I doubt Art Adams will ever return to it, but I'd support a Kickstarter to get him to do more.

Hot take: Ann O'Brien is a better redhead Amazon than Fairchild from Gen-13.
Seriously, I adored this short-lived series by Arthur Adams. I would love to have a commission from him. Even if it's a simple pin-up. His artwork is truly stellar.

RE: Byrne's Dark Horse titles... granted, I am not the world's biggest authority on this, but I remember reading several interviews where Byrne clearly stated that he had a minimum threshold of sales he would require from a book in order to keep working on it. The numbers at the time would look pretty good by today's standards, but back then I guess he didn't think the math made sense to put his creative endeavors and energy into a book that didn't sell well enough (in his opinion). Kind of ironic, I suppose, when the thing he's best known for NOW is doing a "free" X-Men comic on his website.
It's. kind of a shame that he doesn't really publish anything anymore... I grew up reading comics in the 80s and he was *MY* guy-- I can appreciate what Kirby did and what he contributed to everything, but Byrne will always be my #1 comic artist because of that upbringing.

it especially blows because his darkhorse comics were stellar. danger unlimited was rife for some kind of saturday morning series and 2112 is always an interesting read. the last few proper comics he did for IDW were solid reads too. its when you get to his star trek stuff that it all fell apart for me.

@@wtk6069 kind of mindblowing to think of anyone nowadays having fifty thousand faithful readers. Byrne definitely zigged when he should have zagged as the industry was collapsing, instead of continuing doing his own creations that he maybe could have exploited once Hollywood became really interested in comics, he went back to the big two and like fully embraced doing weird nostalgia/alternate continuity stuff instead of being forward thinking.

Ironically, I bought the Vertigo version of Angel & the Ape only for the covers. Now, that was a disappointing series.

Not gonna lie, I preferred his earlier stuff like Longshot. His work became a little cartoonier later and I just didn't like it as much.
