    The first part of the fence to rot will probably be the top rim along the very top of the fence as can be seen on your old panels so it’s a good idea to brush some varnish Along the top edges as they weather first .
    Now they will last a lot longer

    In my experience its not those vertical battens that fail over time, its the horizontal battens top and bottom that fail causing the panel to bow in wind and then break. So I would say your idea is very good but doing the horizontal battens would be a good idea too.

      The vertical battens sandwich the horizontals. Some panels have vertices on both sides opposite each other. I always buy these and then pre drill and put a screw into them so it holds the horizontals tighter. They last much longer then

    Great video! What mm drill bit and screws did you use?

    • @LurgsHowToGuides
      @LurgsHowToGuides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can’t remember but just make sure it’s smaller than the screws that you use. And use galvanised screws so they don’t rust. Really does help strengthen cheap fence panels

    I tried normal screwdriver same way without drill. Lots of long timber crake. Please kindly where can buy same timber and size. How much

  • @ishratsatter5628
    @ishratsatter5628 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello which size screw will buy from b and q. Your one size kindly tell me and drill size. Cos I have same problem

    • @LurgsHowToGuides
      @LurgsHowToGuides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just measure the width of the fence panel then get some screws which are shorter than that, and make sure they are external rustproof screws. Any small drill bit is fine, it's just a pilot hole to stop the wood splitting.

    Excellent video. Any advice on the panels where the wood is vertical and the batons horizontal? I think they're called feather edge panels. Thank you. ❤️

    • @LurgsHowToGuides
      @LurgsHowToGuides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guess the same thing applies but I think they may be stronger anyway.

    Will it not cause cracks in the boards though?

    • @LurgsHowToGuides
      @LurgsHowToGuides  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, that's why you always drill pilot holes, stops the wood splitting.

      They do fine, the nails are just ordinary steel anyway. I use stainless steel screws so I can reuse them.

    As a fencing contractor of 30 years we never recommend these panels they are cheap and don't last and a few screws is not going to help.

    • @philokeefe7960
      @philokeefe7960 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, totally agree - all these waney panels are a bit flimsey but at least get ones with 10 vertical batons - and a 50 mil horizontal one side top and bottom is good, you can wizz some gold screws in to stiffen it up - pilot holes? Nah.

    • @argonaut6386
      @argonaut6386 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how well you install it. I've done my own including posts and they have outlasted the ones my neighbour had put in by 'A professional fencing company' at the same time They've been up for over ten years and still rock solid. Theirs were replaced three years ago included posts as they had concreated them in and not angled the top of the concrete to allow water run off.

    That is plasterboard/drywall screws. Not designed for out door use. The nails will last longer than the screws.
