    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +212

      Yes, you're correct, a100%!! There are many things to be considered when you've just lost an engine! While it is true, that losing one engine is not really a cause for immediate concern, on a 4-engine 747, there is a possibility of it becoming a serious issue on a long transatlantic flight like they were on!
      Even though they were "lightly loaded" 3 engines would cause them to fly at a somewhat lower altitude. Winds could be very different from what they had calculated for the trip!
      They could be facing a HEADWIND instead of a possible jet-stream they were hoping to take advantage of. This could have a drastic effect on fuel burn and depending on how much fuel they took on, could mean not having enough fuel to make the crossing.
      Another issue is, flying at a lower altitude means greater aerodynamic drag (wind resistance) because of "thicker air" (denser air). Also resulting in a higher fuel burn, and worsening the above mentioned situation even more.
      Yet another issue is the *_asymmetric thrust_* due to one less engine on one side of the aircraft. To counter that and keep the aircraft flying "straight" the pilot will have to use opposite rudder to compensate. This also creates additional DRAG! AND EVEN MORE FUEL BURN!!
      Now, can people see how all of this adds up? And these are just 3 things that immediately come to mind. There are, other concerns as well that I could go on and on about.
      So, NO, it's not a simple issue of "oh, they've just lost one engine, what's the big deal?" It's far more complex than that when you're talking about a long ocean crossing with no alternate airports to land at!
      So, yes, they made the absolute right decision, one hundred percent!

      it may be a cultural thing, idk, but i'm german as well and I can't really find sarcasm in the controllers voice and hearing the pilots responses, I think the pilots couldn't either. where do you think he was being sarcastic? the "engine failure but no emergency" part? if yes, to me it sounds more like a clarification of the situation than anything else.

    • @Puffmac1
      @Puffmac1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Sicklehead88 It's the tone of the controller's voice that makes it sarcastic and frankly, I found it completely unprofessional. The controller was completely undermining the pilot's decision not to declare an emergency and if the pilots had reacted to it, could have made a situation out of nothing. At the end of the day the controllers can still declare an emergency in the background on behalf of an aircraft even if the pilots didn't deem it necessary so if they really wanted to play with the fire engines they could still have done so without having to mock the pilots on frequency.

    • @Puffmac1
      @Puffmac1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zangief ☭ On what basis is there urgency or distress in this situation that requires an emergency to be declared, and what makes it reckless to not have done so? The crew would have declared an emergency had the situation dictated is, as they are trained to do, but to re-iterate what I said in my comment above, in any case ATC can declare an emergency on behalf of any aircraft if they deem it necessary regardless of the flight crew's decision.
      Factors that may have resulted in a situation of distress or urgency would be for example: if there was an uncontained engine failure; damage caused to the aircraft as a result of the engine failure; an overweight landing (which the pilots clearly stated was not the case when asked); or a critical fuel state.
      Given the fact the failure happened just after departure they should have absolutely diverted and landed immediately, which they did, but diverting does not necessitate the declaration of a pan-pan or mayday. Had this happened midway over the Atlantic, they may well have continued onwards to their destination with the 3 remaining engines, fuel permitting, or diverted under a pan-pan somewhere in the UK if fuel was more critical. A single engine failure on 4 engine jet is not in the same realm of urgency as a single engine failure in a single or twin engine aircraft and the aircraft can continue to fly safely with some reduced performance and slight yaw caused by the thrust asymmetry/increased drag which can be easily trimmed out.

      It’s pretty much a cut and dry decision to be honest - you’d never fly a complete route with one engine inop. In fact if it cannot be restarted the checklist would direct the pilots to land at the nearest suitable airport. If they decided to continue, they would not have enough fuel to complete the planned route in any case.

    • @ronaldfischer1195

      Agreed. I fly on C17s and there are specific procedures where we’ll fly with 3 engines. It’s a normal checklist we can run, with higher approval of course. The only issue is fuel planning due to lower airspeed and increased engine thrust under heavy loads. This plane was light so fuel may have not even been a factor. Better safe than sorry though.

      @@TheInsaneHardstyle What rubbish! Do you call the police and breakdown services if you get an ABS failure warning light while driving your car? An engine failure on a 4 engine aircraft near the start of a long flight means that it is prudent to land rather than continuing the flight, but absent any other fault indications it does not present any significant risk to the aircraft or passengers. Had it been a short flight or had happened later into the flight, they may even have elected to continue. At most it warrants a "pan" call. The pilot was quite certain that he would be able to conduct a routine and safe landing (and did so), so why create a big drama? Declaring an emergency when it is unnecessary can put other aircraft at risk as priority is given to the emergency aircraft, and the extra load on ATC means that mistakes are more likely. For the pilot it was not much more than an annoyance - like having a headlight fail on a car.

    Stunning recreation as always. I heard this interchange between the Lufthansa Captain and JFK ATC on VASAviation a few months ago and I thought ATC caught himself, I think, initially veering off into sarcasam with his first response of "Oh...so you have an engine failure but you're not an emergency aircraft". I thought the Captain was trying to avoid going through the paperwork of an emergency landing...with "No...not an emergency...not even close". A destroyed turbine disk is a pretty serious situation but I guess all the flight crew knew was they had a misbehaving engine they needed to shut down. Why they chose to continue on the departure heading, even for just a few minutes I think supports that they were minimizing the situation at all costs. What a spectacular simulation. I concur with another post that you could have easily confused some of the initial gate shots as the real deal. Just amazing software.

    Shortly after takeoff we heard a loud bang and started smelling smoke. We all started praying.
    Despite the age of the plane and (as we later found out) an engine failure on the right wing, our flight crew were badasses. Made everyone feel calm, turned the flight around and proceeded to land safely. I still remember the relief and all the clapping when we landed.

      Why would they? Engine failure is part of "the holy trinity" in airline flight simulations, so they've been dealing with this problem every six months in the sim since they started flying airliners. They continued with the SID long enough to complete the engine shutdown checklist, which solved the problem, the aircraft was light (1/3 capacity), didn't need to dump fuel, so they didn't want to screw up JFK schedules more than it was necessary. Maybe they ruined the ATC's delight of having a more interesting shift, as more or less serious emergencies were a almost daily thing on JFK before 2020.

  • @mirrepoix
    @mirrepoix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    JFK's got some fun-sounding folks on staff. that's the kind of energy that almost calms the stress levels of a situation, for me at least- that 'i've seen it all' easygoing personality, like anything that can go wrong will turn out fine and they'll make sure of it. when you fuck up they'll catch you and they keep you on track, but they kinda ease the pressure of the situation with their method of doing so.
    i'm also loving these newer videos! i love the old ones, too, but it's refreshing to see a more "run-of-the-mill" (relatively speaking!) mechanical issue that doesn't break my heart with the casualty count by the end of it. that's what you sign up for when you watch videos like this but still LOL and for example, this situation i'd never even heard about. very fascinating when everything you're seeing is completely new info vs say, tenerife. great work as always!

    Hell I had the same thing happen to me on a flight out of JFK for Miami in 2016. We took off in a 767, I believe, and got about fifteen minutes out over the Atlantic when I heard a load pop, and the left engine started vibrating something awful. We returned to JFK on one engine, where, taking no chances, fire and emergency crews were waiting. We made it to the gate on our own power, after which we were told to de-plane, walk twenty feet to a gate across the aisle, and simply re-take our exact same seats on an exact same 767. Twenty minutes later were were back in the air headed to Miami and moving on with the rest of our lives. Damnedest thing that ever happened to me.

    That "Alright" at 6:54 is the same one parents give their kids when they're tired of telling them not to do something for the 100th time and are content with just letting them hurt themselves and learning the hard way lol. But yes, good decision by the pilots to not try to make the Atlantic crossing on 3 engines. You lose another one half way there and all of the sudden everybody on board is in trouble. Best to not take a chance.

      The pilot knew what he was doing. One engine out - decided not to continue flight over the ocean - totally calm - got plane down safe. Sounds totally competent - no risk taker.

    • @SimonTekConley
      @SimonTekConley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jamesupton4996 I understand that concept. But as I recall, you can't see most of the plane from the cockpit, if there was a bigger issue than what was known, having a fire/rescue on standby isn't going to hurt anything. I've been to fires where mutual aid was called off, when it was actually needed.

      @@SimonTekConley But also the engine was auto-shutdown like 15 minutes ago. And there were no other problems apparent in the cockpit, and no passengers or fight attendants are reporting any kind of smoke or fire, after you told them "we're returning to JFK because of an engine issue." I mean, as a PAX, that would be the kind of thing that would cause me to bring the window shade up, and stare intently at the wings!!!
      The problem with "emergency vehicles standing-by" is, doesn't that kinda interfere with "thanks, but can you give us taxi instructions to a gate?"

    • @SimonTekConley
      @SimonTekConley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@oshi8ooP complacency at it's best. Next time a plane lands while it's on fire, and the air crew says no help needed, y'all will be screaming that they should've been on standby. All standby means is they are ready to run. They are dressed, and in the trucks ready to go.
