      Arturia's Bus Force plugin has a Pultec-style EQ that visually shows you what's going on with the curve when you turn the knobs. You can also move the nodes on the curve if you prefer.
      It's probably the most intuitive version of a Pultec EQ for people who aren't familiar with the hardware. Don't sleep on it.
      For a 1-to-1 representation of the hardware, UAD's Pultec plugin is perfect, but many others do the exact same thing.
      Arturia always seem to nail the original hardware's sound while improving upon the controls in their plugins which is a big plus for me.

    I know this is a bit older, but I just discovered this channel. Watched this one and the more recent gain staging one today. Very clear and to the point. Subscribed :) This one really gave me a better understanding of the Pultec. I've always avoided it because I didn't understand it much. You've got me more interested.

    I've taken many audio classes on different topics, and I must say Sara Carter is one on the most articulite teachers I've listen to. Sara also has some great courses at her website, if you need help with a certain subject. I bought one of her courses and it was money well spent.

    Great tutorial - as usual! I'd been living under a rock and hadn't heard of the Pultec. What a smooth warmth and sheen. Isn't it funny how some of the older tech was so much richer in sound. A lot of old synth sounds felt so much fuller than their tinny successors.

    This is probably the cleanest explanation of the Pultec EQ I have ever seen. All the information you really need... showing the EQ curve and how the boost/attenuation changes it instantly made sense to me, and your graceful demeanor really makes the lesson go down smooth. Excellent video.

      @SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thanks for replying. I couldn't really find other specific videos on why to use tape. It's mostly videos on saturation in general, or plugin reviews. I think a lot of beginners (myself included) have a very superficial understanding (it introduces saturation, maybe some fluctuations and sounds "retro" etc), but when applied subtly I honestly struggle to hear/understand what's actually achieved.

    Hi Sara! I'm really enjoying how you explain and showcase the concepts and plugins in all your videos. In this one I only wish I would hear more gain compensation to hear better the difference. Because when you know it's about 1db or more you can just turn the gain or output down for helping us to hear the exact changes. Of course I will learn as I open the Pultec, but it saves time hearing first from a qualified professional. Keep making great content!

    Btw, if talking about the UAD bass boost, it cannot handle bumps in the infra range frequencies (like in original 909 kicks or d16 Drumazon 2). Or if the input signal has an DC Offset. It will have an aliasing noise, if you put a compressor afterwards (and push it very hard). UAD has confirmed it, but not going to fix it. Just said that I need to put an EQ before their Pultec.

    Emulation and Modeling are two very different things. The UAD Pultec EQ is modeled and not an emulation. Big difference. In Modeling you take every component of the actual hardware and program the exact behavior. Lately they even enhanced how several circuit stages interact with each other.
    Emulation, on the other hand, you just get a couple of guys in a room, and see if the sound is close to the original- much inferior, because the response is a moving target, depending on frequency, amplitude and distortion (by distortion, in this case, I mean any difference from the source signal)
    There are many more details, but I’ll stop here.

  • @johanjof5613

    It is very strange that you use costly pultec plugins that you name, and a free analyzer that you do NOT name, which could however have been nice to support them. Interesting talk for beginners though

  • @athonygraham8353
    @athonygraham8353 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Good video with some good tips. There's no argument that the things a Pultec can do are good, although after all these years, it's hardly "amazing". When you say "subtle enhancing property" in regard to simply passing a signal through the plugin, what does that even mean? Are you talking about harmonic distortion? More and more people are still doing more and more Pultec video's after all these years and they're still all full of generic word salad like "subtle enhancing property" and "subtle warmth" and "sheen". In this day and age and after what seems like an eternity of Pultec explanation videos, I think it would be more valuable to extract the exact components of these enhancements and replicate them, showing exactly what it does and how you can get the same result from using stock or free plugins for eq and harmonic distortion etc. Otherwise, it's another Pultec emulation plugin that's basically saying that Pultecs are "magical" and no exact details or ways of easily (and it is easy) replicating this "magic". It's simply another advert for UAD or Waves (☢🤮), whether you are getting paid, sponsored or affiliate linking, it's just another advert.

      I agree. Another Pultec vid, yawn. How many over the past 20 years? FFS. The world of plugins is dying out. AI is already hurtling down the path and we'll all be able to get AI to mix our songs on a granular and professional level for free. Most of the plugin market is musicians desperately trying to get their songs to sound "professional" and have to learn all this mystical BS. With AI, we musicians can get back to the most important thing, the music. In truth, the plugin market needs to die off properly, it's only marketing and lack of confidence by beginners that's keeping it going at this stage. Mixers are looking down the barrel of a gnu as well.
