Magnificent, and this discussion did a tremendous job putting a finger on central tensions regarding online networks. I love the idea of “the reverse matrix” happening today, and I agree there is power in these networks which is waiting to be fully realized (we’re today experimenting with new technologies of social coordination, I think). I appreciate the tension between goals and embracing a lack of goals (which makes me think of “tilling soil” as a work today), and I laughed hard at the idea of Jesus today only having five thousand followers. Amazing, and well done again!

20 minutes in. I think there are fundamental affordances to online communities and local communities. Online gives breadth. You have the vast ocean of human personality and experience you can sail over, find different islands of thought and experiences. These are low resolution relationships. Local communities are small lakes that are immensely deep. There may not be many places to go on that lake but you can know every nook and cranny. These are high resolution relationships. Perhaps this metaphor is not the best. Both of these community generalizations are valuable in their own way and neither are sufficient on their own. Good stuff so far.
End of video addendum: Perhaps the above metaphor does fit with how you wrapped up the video. The information and relational ecology is like the water cycle. Local communities are the lakes, ponds, streams and rivers that flow into and feed the ocean (international, digital communities), which in turn returns to the local in a constant multidirectional feedback system. The telos of the system would be its overall health and fertility of the system and its dependents which is ever changing and evolving into something that we are both connected to but also, largely, unaware of.

Last note : You will NEVER realize the "potential" of any supposed 'network' [as tuning in is an affect not a cause] People, here, run on vulnerability and temporary perspectives. [falsely perceived incentives that History should inform to the contrary,. e.g. Naivety. The better capacities will always fall by the wayside in favor of preference and routine. Its like sweets vs meats. Guess which one most folks will choose as they make some conditioned claim to excuse them from attending the harder more sustaining growth oriented choice... A sweets convention posing as diet fad of the future....to secure their place in ego and preference. NOT Ideals. ]
Already several steps removed from any realizable or Ideal pursuit. [That pesky constant called Nature. To say nothing {well something} of} of incentives and ignorance - also - it should be noted - constants]
The hope you continue to express will be in defiance {re: any appearance of cohesion via collective} of Nature and hierarchical standards. We all have distinct natures mingled with that of conditioned affects. Individuation>collectivism is and will always be the final Boss.
Therefor - the question should be "Now what?"
not how? - per a false scheme hoped for naively.
