Can A Flight Simmer Handle A Full Motion Level D Boeing 737 Simulator?

- Hey there. I know this is a cooking channel, but I would like to stray off topic just once if I may!
I have recently just celebrated my 50th Birthday. Another big passion of mine is flight and flight simulation. I recently was lucky enough to spend an hour in a full motion level D 737-800 simulator. These really are as real and perform just the same as the real aircraft, they are unreal!
Can a PC simmer actually fly one of these big things in real life? Take a look and find out! I feel I did okay, just could not get used to steering the aeroplane on the ground using my feet and rudder pedals. On my flight yoke at home, the rudders on operated by hand using the twist grip. My brain really struggled to get used to it.
If you would like to try this for yourself, I can't recommend captain Mak enough, he was patient and really helped me make the most out of my hour.

I have never been to a Level D simulator; only to a commercial one based on ProSim+Prepar3D that doesn't move. My first experience felt as if my brain was 50% lost. I knew where all the B737 switches were, but suddenly, it was a completely different perspective than from a 2D monitor. I felt a bit lost. I could takeoff/land however it was not that nice. Later, I started flight simming exclusively in VR, and since then, I tried again. This time, it was much easier for me because the perspective was the same.
This is a great comment and it makes perfect sense. I felt pretty much exactly the same. I sat down and thought ‘WTF, where in the hell is everything?! ‘ I kinda got used to it, but I definitely struggled with it, without a doubt. I’ve tried VR, but only with GA stuff, my Quest isn’t quite up to the task. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, it’s much appreciated. Safe flying 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Whatever others say : For a full flight simulator flight, you handled the landings exceptionally well. Better than most other beginners. Respect! (sorry for my english)
Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. This being a cooking channel, I knew I’d be opening myself up to a little trolling posting this. Some very basic mistakes made which I was more than well aware of, the moment got the better of me at times. That being said, I actually did a whole lot better than I ever thought I would so thanks again for the positivity and also for taking the time to watch RTF 🙋🏻♂️😀
That was brilliant Ritchie. I can imagine the nerves, well done. ❤️🌺
Aww bless ya Lemore. This is off topic so thanks so much for watching 🙋🏻♂️❤️😀
That’s quality Rich. Top effort mate, impressed with the landings!
Thanks Ben, I really appreciate that mate. Nothing can compare you for that, absolutely unreal! Being a simmer definitely helped though, no doubt about it.
Brilliant video, great job
Thanks buddy, I appreciate you stopping by. Glad you enjoyed the video 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Awesome. Smooth landings mate!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that. I actually did a lot better than I thought I would! Being a flight simmer definitely helps, particularly when managing the auto pilot.
Thanks for supporting my channel 🙋🏻♂️😀
I'd love to see more flight sim stuff!
Ah thanks very much, I really appreciate the positive feedback. To be honest, I was very unsure how well this video would be received by the flight sim community. I’ll definitely look at doing some more then. Thanks again 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Really nice! good one!
Hi there, thanks, I appreciate your kind feedback. The audio is lacking, sadly but there was no time to sound check. 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Fantastic content. You did amazingly for someone that has no real world experience in a 738. I got my PPL in no time thanks to simming most of my life.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, it is very much appreciated. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life so I wanted to share it on my channel. Congratulations on gaining your PPL by the way, that’s awesome. I’d love to do mine. Thanks also for supporting my channel. All the best 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Amazing👌 Huge struggle in real live or I mean Real sim😉 Greetings from the Netherlands
Hi Antonio, it was a struggle at times. The controls were much more hard work that I imagined they would. They respond much slower than on my PC. Thanks very much for watching and for leaving a positive comment, I’m glad you enjoyed 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
@@RichieTheFoodie I taught Richie, the Controls respond manuel way slower on my PC instead of Real Sim. I was wrong
@@AntonioCaruso906 I guess it could depend on how you have your joystick configured
Thanks so much for watching! To all of my subscribers, I’ll be back with more food content as normal, next week 😊
how much?
@@jjstevenz £500. Expensive I know but it was a one in a lifetime thing that I have always wanted to do. Not something I’ll be doing every week 🤣 Thanks for taking the time to watch, I appreciate it 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
man i would do that in a heart beat wish i had one close to me lol @@RichieTheFoodie
@@jjstevenz it was far better than I could ever imagine! Is there one not close to you?
closest is in Florida 12 hours away @@RichieTheFoodie
Yes, 300 hours on x plane and then I did a flight with a real flight instructor in 737-ng sim and he was impressed, landed 35 knts cross wind😊
35 knot crosswind!? That’s very impressive. The most I had was 7-10 knots. Tried to land in a major storm but didn’t manage it. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Great video, would suggest adding subtitles as it is a bit hard to understand the conversation with the instructor during the flight
Thanks very much, that’s a great idea, I had no idea how the sound would pick up following the recording. I will look into this later in the week. I appreciate your support 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Nice one come to Lincoln and have a go in our 737 sim at flight director mate
Thanks, I might just do that, you’re not that far from me. I appreciate you taking the time to watch 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Wow, very cool video thanks for the upload. Does anyone know what simulator they use? X-plane, p3d, or a proprietary software?
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your kind comments and glad you enjoyed the video. I’m not sure what they use, but I’ve used both and it didn’t look like either. 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
I suspect you are out buying rudder pedals now?
That’s a great call, and I do admit that I’ve priced the 737 yoke and pedals up. Even though it was obvious to me that I should steer with my feet, I struggled to get my brain to register it! Thanks very much for watching, I appreciate it 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
What do they charge a guy to go do this? I'd like to give it a shot.
Hi Andrew. I’m note sure where you’re from. Here in the U.K it was £500 for an hour. Expensive, I know but if you’re passionate about planes/airliners like we are, it’s more than worth it. An incredible experience like no other, and only something I’ll manage to do once, maybe twice 😁 (already sweet talking the wife 🤣) give it a shot and see what you can do! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
And now at night in low visibility with a 25kt crosswind?
Well we’d never know now would we 😀. Thanks for taking a look 😀🙋🏻♂️RTF
When are you gonna be flying me to America.
Haha, in the next life maybe 😀 Thanks as always for watching 🤩
I don't know. Did he "land" it? The comms. audio was so bad that I gave up.
Cheers Captain. Unfortunately due cost of the simulator for an hour, you don’t have the time to prep and sound/audio check. It is what it is 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
Answer is yes. With calm winds and no clouds I refuse to believe that if you practice long enough with something like the zibomod and pmdg 737 you wont be able to pull off a landing without crashing on the real thing. Im not saying a perfect one, but Im saying you wont damage the aircraft
That’s a fair comment, that’s kind of what I managed to do here. Like I mentioned in the video, although the simulator is exactly the same, you haven’t got the pressure of potentially killing yourself along with 150 passengers if you get it wrong 😀. Thanks for watching 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
As someone with well over 10,000 hrs. in the real 737, I call BS to that.
@@CockpitScenes run off and flame someone else’s post. Goodness me! This is just a bit of fun man
@@CockpitScenes I call bs to what you wrote. People have landed full motion, level D sims used for training with no previous training and if you can land that I see no reason why you would not be able to put down a real jet in CALM WINDS, CLEAR SKIES without crashing the thing. Hard landing ? Yes. Maintenance check after landing? Definitely. I bet You’re probably one of those guys who will say “BuT tH3 FülL mØt1oN s1M f3El$ nOtH1nG l1KE tH3 rEâL pLaNe !1!1!1”. If so, I’d suggest you have a chat with the many pilots who will say the opposite, including the well respected Mentour Pilot, who’s a 737 captain just like you.
@@valet2972It's funny how you sound like you know what you are talking about. Ever fly a real SIM?, Ever fly any jet transport? If you think a hard landing is no big deal, check out this video. They did not walk away. th-cam.com/video/8SzH3D_lD5U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9dzHuAQjuN0b8hIX Yes, I am "one of those guys".
Upgrade your flight sim gear...:)
That’s a very fair comment. The hour in the sim has caused me to evaluate my setup. I’m looking at the 737 yoke and pedals but not sure if they’re any good or not. Thanks very much for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment 🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
So the answer is no.
Cheers captain! Appreciate your input 🙋🏻♂️❤️RTF
How is the answer no? He clearly landed all attempts at landing.
@@OfficialSheffieldCouncil thanks 😀
You rotate with both hands. The pilot NOT flying always operates the gear and flaps. You don't steer with the yoke on the ground - use your feet and the tiller at slow speeds. Turning off the continuous ignition right after takeoff is stupid. Why didn't you use mics on both of you? Not that hard. Pulling off the power at 30 feet is dangerous - this is not an Airbus. When landing, always keep your hands on the throttles even with AT on.
Before hitting the keyboard and dissecting a video, may I suggest you watch it in its entirety? If you had, you’d have explanations for most of your comments regarding the mistakes made here ‘captain’ Why didn’t I use mics on both of us? That’s because I didn’t use mics on either of us. The commentary is a voice over from home ‘captain’ 😂 Thanks so much for your crucial input though ‘captain’ it all helps the algorithm. Much love ❤️🙋🏻♂️😀RTF
He’s literally a flight simmer and you’re complaining about things he’s not rightfully know. Get off your high horse for Christ’s sake.
He was doing an experience why don't you keep your stupid comments and criticism to yourself and just praise the guy for fulfilling his mission
