    Really impressive functionality in such a small HP footprint! I find that mixers eat up so much HP when I am making a patch that doesn’t need them… it’s so nice to know that this module can still be used in that situation with its utilities!

  • @mattslumwormreyes
    @mattslumwormreyes ปีที่แล้ว

    If you patch the Càrn to the Cuïr (output module) through the back stereo jack, can you still patch additional audio to Cuïr's front inputs?

    • @instruo
      @instruo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can indeed!
      A couple of caveats: the level is controlled by the cuïr control which will also control the level from the càrn stereo out. So for mixing you will need control over your stereo source.
      It will also not be affected by the càrn’s limiter if that were desired.
      I very often use the cuïr’s stereo in (in conjunction with a càrn) as a stereo in for an Arbhar. Works very well for some parallel reverb/granular stereo addition to the full voice.

    That's really nice! I'm not a huge enthusiast of the DIP switches on the back-it's sort of like menu diving except you need a screwdriver and a power disconnect ;) -but I'm not going to argue that what they do is inappropriate. But wow, regardless, that's an ingenious-is compromise the word? I'm not even sure it's a compromise. You know what I mean.
    And, _of course,_ it's beautiful.

    • @instruo
      @instruo  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always just ignore the DIP switches ;)

    • @stephenspackman5573
      @stephenspackman5573 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@instruo Especially since they are on the back ;). No, you are right, as DIP switches go, they seem well chosen-in that I can tell what the “obvious” settings are for me, and I can likewise tell that someone else would make a different choice, and be equally happy to forget after setting. So you're not wrong!

  • @senacht

    Love the functionality However, i would have greatly preferred that the jacks were placed on the bottom of the panel so the patch cords are less likely to end up dangling over the sliders. The way the panel is currently set up I’d probably be more inclined to mount it upside down in the rack and get used to reverse control directions to avoid having cables in my way since I tend to be frequently tweaking mixer settings during a performance. Perhaps a future iteration could flip the panel layout 180 degrees?

    • @instruo
      @instruo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You've hit the nail on the head in terms of the fundamental paradox of module layout!
      It does ultimately come down to subjectivity.
      An alt panel for it at 180º could be done but as you describe, the pan pots would point upside down and faders would go from high to low 😂
      Ultimately I design my modules my personal preference of orientation in mind.
      For modules in a system that I'm particularly hands on with I go with placement at the lowest/closest row of the case. In this placement all channel faders/pots are right up front with all cables branching up and out of the way (other than the x-fade channel's second input).
      I've been finding that very convenient for hands on channel control.
      In larger systems I have other càrn placed by my cuïr output stages, and use them as sub mixes. Where possible I keep things set-and-forget for channel levels and use the master levels for voice mixing. I feel like I get away with them being buried in cables without too much issue for live performance in these instances.
      There will undoubtedly be many configurations and use cases I didn't consider, but feature wise I think i covered most bases with the càrn.

    I’m a bit confused with the half normalled description vs normalled - wouldn’t the behavior by (usual) description in a patchbay mean the opposite? So half normalled keeps the connection and both outputs work? And full normalled would be where it breaks the signal to the main out when you patch to the direct out? Thanks for any reply

    • @instruo
      @instruo  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a good question, and one that I don’t think has a clear answer.
      Patch bays behave very specifically as there are both front and back connections. The “breaking” point differs between active front and back patching as well as top/bottom rows with regards to the terminology full vs half. So it isn’t a direct comparison to a single unbalanced 3.5mm normal contact.
      Patch bay hardware also seems somewhat inconsistent!! Some are balanced connections while others aren’t.
      I wired my studio up recently with some 1/4” bays linking up my outboard gear and I ended up having to just go trial and error and modify connectors as needed for it to work as I intended!
      It was a long day.
      Ultimately I went with what felt logical for the context of the càrn.
      For “fully-normalled” the connection from the output Jack normal is always (fully) connected, even if patched from.
      For “half-normalled” the connection will be broken when patched from the output/bottom row.
      Which does happen to correlate with an article description on Sweetwater.
      Ultimately if I got the terms wrong…
      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ …I can live with it!
      It is what it is, and the arbitrary terms of full/half are what they are in the context of the càrn. So, so long as I keep consistent in my implementation I figured I doesn’t matter too much ☺️

      @@instruo Thank you very much for (so quickly) taking the time to reply and totally I absorb your terminology as logical. Every few years I have patchbay vertigo and feel like I am lost again and check all my labels, labels are key after the long days haha. Amazing work!!!
