Gilsonite is a mineral, it’s carbon rich and used to produce oil, it forms in the carbon layer of the green layer. It is a natural oil producer but in its current form it’s hard and costly to heat up to extract the oil, if I’m not mistaken. Still a cool mineral for collecting.
At 3:56 not a homestead, part of the old camp used to house the miners since the site was so inaccessable. (PS Back roading? Always carry a small tool kit.)

I was there yesterday. I was wanting a piece of Gilsonite for my collection. The American Gilsonite factory was secured like Ft. Knox. I think I saw where you were yesterday, but I didn't the time to get my drone out. Did you ever see any raw Gilsonite somewhere so that people could get a piece for a collection? Thanks! PS: coordinates? PPS: Did you or have you ever traveled over CO-139? Bikers would love it. I was white knuckeled going over it on my return trip at night!

I mine Gilsonite out there and everything we do now is underground and it has been an experience of a lifetime.
