    Reasons why I bought Sigma 30mm F1.4 for MFT cameras:
    1) I used a Sigma 30mm F1.4 on Canon Rebel T2i for many years and it took far better quality photos than Canon 28mm EF or 35mm EF lenses.
    2) I've read Dxomark and various blogger reviews comparing Sigma 30mm F1.4 to Panasonic Leica 25mm F1.4 and Olympus 25mm F1.2. The consensus is that the Sigma 30mm outperforms the Pan Leica 25mm, and the Sigma performs almost as well as Oly 25mm F1.2. Also the Sigma is smaller and lighter than Oly and much less money than Oly or Pan-Leica.
    3) The Sigma gives me another focal length since I already own Oly 25mm F1.8.

    No one should judge a Panasonic M 4/3 camera without testing it with this lens. It's truly is a fantastic lens for the price. Yes, a M 4/3 can provide you nice Bokeh.

    *correction* - 1.4 to 2.8 is 4x the amount of light, not double.

    • @jacakpro
      @jacakpro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are wrong... Light is same in FF and M43 just only shallow depth of field is diffrent ;)

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I was making a correction on saying 1.4 - 2.8 is twice as much on the f stop scale, which it's not. Not the difference between FF. Thanks!

      @@jacakpro Effective focal length doubles from FF to m4/3 and bokeh at any aperture changes by half because of the 2x crop factor. But the relative amount of light based on aperture as measued by F stop works the same on every system ... each stop is double the light of the previous ... so f1, f1.4, f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16 ... and so on. Thus, 1.4 to 2.8 is double doubled ... 4x.

  • @etzow
    @etzow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Little correction here, an aperture of 1.4 lets in 4 times as much light as a f/2.8 (area = π r²) and so is already 2 F-stopps more. 🙂

    This sigma trio is a must for 4/3 and Sony aps-c, however, the 4/3 versions final result is more Sharp in the corners (I guess for the sensor size).
    I got the 16mm and 56mm for photography and some video, the 30mm is a steal but I don't really need that focal length... as you said, is a double edge, I'm happy with the cheap but sharp 25mm f1.7 and if I upgrade I'll definitely go with the upcoming Panasonic Leica 1.4 mark II however, that is a 690USD 😬😭
    Great video BTW.

      @tobiasmoeckel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep in mind that the mark II version of the Leica will be the same as the mark I in terms of optical quality. It is just a slight update, mainly cosmetics. The Sigma beats the Leica in all areas at about half the price. The only deciding factors in favor of the Leica might be focal length and size.

    • @LexTNeville
      @LexTNeville 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tobiasmoeckel I thought they added a new lens coating, which if it's the same one used on the Leica 200mm f2.8, it'll be . I'm just hoping it's quieter for use on set than the old clickety one.

    Very tempting. I’m primarily a photographer that is getting into filmmaking and recently upgraded from a Nikon d3200 to the G85. I have a line up of a few lenses that I had in mind to pick up and have been eyeing the sigma 18-35mm as the central focus of my set up.
    Only reason why I more than likely won’t be getting this lens is because there are native options that better suit my creative needs. Who knows maybe in the future this could be a potential cop if need be.
    Great content bro! I’m new to mirrorless and micro 4/3 and learned a lot about my camera from your videos.

      That's awesome! The 18-35 looks pretty great! Paired with a speedbooster and you'd be set! I'm contemplating adding a speedbooster to my kit again and purchasing a couple fast full frame primes for whenever I move to the S1H years down the road...

    Hey Nolan, nice review!!
    One of the my favorite list lenses
    I'm using GX9 with 12-32 kit lens.
    Mostly I'm using it for traveling, street photo, landscape, portait for nice bokeh.
    Should I go For the Sigma 30mm F1.4 or Lumix 42.5mm F1.7? for prime lens
    As you said, for better choice than the 25mm F1.7

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think for landscape shots your 12-32 will do just fine, just shoot at around F8 for sharpness. If you want a portrait lens, then the 30mm would probably do that the best for you. Though for traveling and street, i think something wider like the 16 1.4 may be a better choice. Thanks for your time!

    I have the G85 and the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 as well, and I'm thinking of upgrading the lens too. Lately I've been doing more portrait work, do you think this sigma lens is a significant improvement over the Panasonic 25mm f1.7?? And how far is it with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4/ Olympus 25mm f1.2 in terms of quality? (cause those 2 are wayy more expensive)
    Great video and would love to know your thoughts! :)

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For photo, a definite upgrade for portraits for sure! For video, the only think to consider is the 60mm equivalent focal length. As long as you have enough room to frame, it is a fantastic lens upgrade from the 25 1.7! I'm planning on a comparison between the 1.2 soon. So stay tuned for that! Thanks!

    I think with full-frame having more advantages over smaller sensors. M4/3 is slowly going to be phased out so there isn't much future-proofing your equipment to answer your question in why aren't many people rushing to by this lense. However, in saying that the cost of it isn't too much of a bank breaker and it definitely has a great build and image quality for sure.

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I hear what you're saying! Although Panasonic is still supporting m43 for the time being, but you're right. Once FF catches up with Ibis, thermal efficiency, and other things, m43 won't be worth it. Case in point - the Canon R5 and the S1H. But I do think micro 4/3 will still be relevant for a few more years.

    • @nickguzman1734
      @nickguzman1734 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ariane! So the 30mm is called a prime lens, meaning turning the ring doesn't make it zoom in or out. It's basically "fixed" at 30mm. I think the reason it's not focusing when you turn it is because you are set on Autofocus. I would honestly leave it on eye detect autofocus and not use the focus ring for now. Very nice video, as always Nolan! It seems that the 30mm suffers of chromatic aberrations at 1.4. At 2.8 they aren't there anymore, but the images are also very sharp, even before you added extra sharpness. I think that's its sweet spot.
    One more thing, from 1.4 to 2.8 there isn't twice much as light, but 4 times. Every full stop doubles the amount of light hitting the sensor.

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hello and congratulations on your video. I write from Italy, I am inexperienced and I am forced to use AF for my video clips. I have a GH5 and I fell in love with this Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens. I would like to ask you for advice: is it really not recommended to use this lens for videos if you intend to use AF only? The focus is really much slower and more complicated than a normal 25mm 1.7 Panasonic? Thanks for your suggestions

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have a lot of AF experience with this lens, but if you need to somewhat rely on it, I would recommend sticking with a native Panasonic lens. Otherwise, shooting at 1080p with a higher shutter speed (maybe around 1/200) will help the contrast detect stay more locked. I don’t know much, but that seems to be AF consensus on most Panasonic cameras.

      @@NolanGunn dear friend, in the meantime, thank you for your availability. Since you are an expert, I ask you a trivial question for you but as you will have understood I am not an expert and I can not find the solution:
      when you are in AFF video mode how do you enable the lens ring in order to move the focus from one point to another? Practically as it is set, if I turn the ring does not change the focus I have to go and click on the touch screen ... Instead I would like to do it with the lens ring, also because on my Ronin SC combo I have the focus motor. I state that on the menu I have already activated AF + MF but it does not work. what else do i need to adjust? Thanks for your help

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First, make sure to have your focus switch set to “MF” (or, manual focus) and then that will enable your focus ring to work (and if your lens has a switch, set it to MF).
      I’m not sure how to connect the ronin SC though. Hope this somewhat helps!
