    I bought that kit a few years ago. It took a LOT of time to set up but I'm very pleased with it - great value. Impressed with the bridge that allows each string to be intonated. The only thing I upgraded was the scratch plate. To me, the pickups sound fine. Really thick neck but that's probably a good idea. Great value.

    I like it a lot. Probably the first time i see what basswood looks like without any finish. It's good looking and will age nicely. I would let it dry out for a few months as is, then stain and clearcoat it. Or maybe just clearcoat it and nothing else. I wouldn't smother it with a thick finish like poly. Give it like 2 or 3 thin coats of nitro and call it finish. Get it a Robcaster logo for the headstock though.

    • @theguitarmanifesto
      @theguitarmanifesto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's pretty dry as is, i'm gonna stain it very lightly and some oil or varnish to seal it in.
      It's a great base guitar to mod.
      I was thinking Robcaster XII on the headstock while I was building it :)

    Just bought one for my Christmas present to me. Going to use all new pickups and bridge. I’m also going to Waterjet cut a new pic guard out of carbon fibre with two Humbuckers and a single coil in the middle. I’ll be finishing the body in red. So between the red and carbon fibre, it should be fairly unique. Can’t wait to get on this project.

    Octave strings are meant to go over the intonation screw from the back of the bridge. They actually go over the side of it and need loosening to adjust intonation anyway. I think the hole before that screw is threaded and supposed to be a forward position for the small saddle. Such a configuration is required to intonate strings mounted in Rickenbacker style (inverted courses with octave string after the main one).
    It is actually a clever design.

  • @rogerfelez7478
    @rogerfelez7478 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Got mine today, everything OK besides one of the tuners that doesn't have the hole for the string (I know it sounds weird but when I realized that I could not believe it) and the fret ends that are very shrap, I've cut myself while playing it. But thanks to your video I took some precautions when building the guitar, just in case I've tuned a step down so the high G string is less likely to snap and managed to put the string retainer in a position that covers the strings that go out of the nut all the time. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful!

      Awesome glad the video helped, it's a great little guitar.
      That's bizarre with the tuner hole 😂

    I'm a fan of the kits but when you compare it to what you can buy new/ used and also the mods you have to do to bring it up to standard they seem a bit pricey, loving the 12 string tho, looks cool natural wood too

    • @theguitarmanifesto
      @theguitarmanifesto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is very true but if it's gonna be a keeper then it's not so bad you can always sell the upgrades on, nice to know you made it yourself too. Yeah I'm digging the natural finish. Got to love a 12 string amazing sound

  • @jamesneale8853
    @jamesneale8853 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've just bought a Pitbull version of this and I'm also going to have an issue with sorting the strings out, the assembly of the bridge is also a bit vague...but what ever the shortfalls picked up on this build I think it represents very good value for money, I really like the tone especially between third and middle pups.

    Good video, It would be good to see part two new ‘tree’ fitted new saddle, and paint job or varnish and new pick ups swapped out and replaced, with all of those things that you said would make it better through to completion. Great vid sounded good clean, impressive!

    Looks absolutely excellent! When you consider a 12 string Ric goes for £2K+ on Ebay and sounds pretty much the same, I call this a brilliant deal and have an order in hand. Curious to know what it sounds like thru a compressor (say Janglebox) but as a long time Byrds fan I'm keen to ge† my hands on one of these!

    I've done 2 guitar kits in the past 5 years and got them from BYOguitar in the states. Couple things I like about them is they tend to stay away from the really crappy parts n they give you some choices on the kits such as nut, bridge, tuners, n pickups. Can even get some of them finished for those who don't have the setup for doing that themselves.

    Why does everybody call it an input jack? It is an output jack. If you want an input jack, look at the amplifier. And please don't dab with the soldering iron. Put it on and hold it there until the joint is made. Dabbing is a recipe for a cold joint that will fail.
