    "Mystery Ring" is a chain deflector, to prevent a hot mess if the chain derails. You have to be extremely careful torqueing it back on, as if it isn't done one or two turns at a time (using the star pattern of course), the little 90° elbows are prone to snap. It's done very, very gingerly & always even across the star. Take your time.
    Ask me how my Partzilla account and myself know.

      Unfortunately i had to use it once. The chain was a bit loose, so it derailed, and the chain deflector made its job. Very nice.

      felipe.lucas.r3 I had a friend just tell me a story how on his dad was riding and his chain broke or it threw his chain and it destroyed his foot and he had to have it amputated. Is that what you’re referring to? Just curious if those are correlated, again it’s just something i heard.

      @@ApeRiderr The ring won't stop the chain from breaking but what it can do is, in the event the chain comes off the sprocket, prevent the chain from hopping around the lugs holding the sprocket on and suddenly being caught on one. Having the rear wheel suddenly stop at speed will not be a fun time for the rider or their drive train lol

      Quentin Delautre Not necessarily. On most bikes with 6 speed transmission the top speed is reached in 5th gear. The 6th gear is setup as am overdrive to keeps revs down when cruising at highway speeds.
      With the new shorter sprocket setup the top speed might be reached in 6th gear now. Of course this all depends on the actual gear ratios and such but the impact on top speed shouldn’t be that big.

  • @johndavidwolf4239

    As the MTO3 has a 6 gear transmission, another route would be to go in the opposite direction, that being INCREASE the front sprocket by 1 tooth and DECREASE the rear by 2, going to a 15-41. the downside would be a decrease in acceleration off the line but ONLY to the ground speed where you shifted out of first with the original 14-43 gearing, after that acceleration over ground (not in a specific gear) would be about the same up to redline in 4th (~85 mph?), although the acceleration in each gear measured by 'butt accelerometer' would feel less. The upside is that at highway speeds (70 mph) in 6th gear, the engine would be spinning at around 7,100 rpm, less 'buzzy' but still within its power-band and use less fuel , of note if you wanted to do a quick pass of someone you might want to down shift to 5th which would put the power/torque at about what it was stock in 6th, you could even down shift to 4th and be at near peak power/torque for maximum acceleration up about 85 mph. Top speed would be about the same, only it would be in 5th, with 6th being slightly slower, somewhat like an 'overdrive' in a car.

    I just cut the old one with pliers XD
    But I got the original transmission because my Enduro would be much slower (RR125LC 4T 2018) because the normal speed is around 95 kph, so around 60 mph. Wouldn't like it to be slower, but up the hills would be much easier ^^

    Nice video guys. I've actually thought before of going the opposite on my '88 GSX1100F before. So many times at highway speeds around 4000 rpm at around 60 MPH I find myself pushing that shifter up for another gear that just isn't there.
    I don't think on a big sport touring bike a person would feel that much of a loss in the acceleration if they dropped a couple of teeth in the rear sprocket, while it would drop the revs a bit and improve gas mileage for those longer rides.

    • @chrishart8548
      @chrishart8548 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It works well if the bike has the torque for the taller gearing. If you take something like a 600/4 and try and drop the rpm with gearing you find the 600 was all about the revs and won't pull 4k or under very well and it takes the edge off what made the 600 so much fun. Should have got a twin or bigger cc if that's what you wanted. Only an example. I thought it was strange a BMW s1000xr sits at 4.5k ,@60mph where the F800gs is 4k@60mph. The f700gs is 4k@65mph. But only because it has a 17 tooth front sprocket Vs 16 on the 800

      @@chrishart8548 I totally agree. One thing about a bigger engine is that abundance of torque. At 68 years old chances are that I won't be looking to win any drag races like I probably would have 30 years ago, but reduced revs on the highway and a couple more miles per gallon would be nice. 😎

    So, people go back and forth on this.. but making the front sprocket smaller makes the chain have a smaller circumference to rotate around thus causing more stress on the links. People still do it through and claim no issues. Also steel sprockets lasts longer than aluminum usually but its heavier unsprung weight. 520 conversion also popular too but not necessary. Its been discussed to death, just some food for thought. Use gear commander website to calculate ratios and mph stuff! Your speedo may not be accurate after changing gearing and worse mpg! You are saying you are going 70mph on the highway but you are actually probably more in the 60mph range. This bike stock reads 2-3mph higher than it's actually going at highway speeds. When you dropped a front tooth and kicked on 2 in the rear you made that gap MUCH wider.

    Should have addressed how gear change affects the speedometer and odometer...

  • @alphaforce6998
    @alphaforce6998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Unless you put a "speedo healer" on the bike after changing the final drive and didn't show you doing that, the MPH readout is going to be reading higher than actual speed. Your ODO will also count more miles than you actually ride.
    Stock: 43/14 = 3.07
    New: 45/13 = 3.46
    3.46 is about 13% more than stock, which means at a given speed you would need to reduce the readout by 13%.
    70 MPH * 0.87 = 60.9 MPH
    60 MPH * 0.87 = 52.2 MPH
    50 MPH * 0.87 = 43.5 MPH
    40 MPH * 0.87 = 34.8 MPH
    So, after that change, you are giving up a lot of MPH. Personally, I would have just done +2 teeth in the rear and kept the front sprocket stock. That would have placed you somewhere in between stock and where you are right now in terms of final drive.

    Hey! Great video, as always. I am very happy but also very sad. I finished my safety course yesterday, and am now certified to upgrade my license to M2 (I live in Canada)! Riding that little Grom was awesome, and I am ecstatic that I can finally ride anywhere I want, but at the same time, the next few month are going to be torture. I am going to strangle myself with fishing line before I buy that dang Duke.. haha..
    Any suggestions on making the wait easier?

      We have different motorcycle licenses in Canada? Least here in Canada BC you do your knowledge test which is a written test(anyone can pass easily) then a motorcycle skill test( in a parking lot also very easy to pass) then you can ride where ever you want on any bike as long as it's before the sun gos down. I know this because I did it when I was 16

      This is true on almost all motorcycles, but as someone said some do utilize a front speed sensor but this is a rare occurrence. For about $100 USD you can find a speedo healer to correct this issue. You can find around 10% inaccuracies without it. You will also lose accuracy on your odometer as well if you do not use the healer.
