Chelsea's biggest problem is that Boely has been buying players like he's running a baseball team in a league that doesn't have relegation. His rebuild is that exact blueprint - buy young players on the up, sign them to long-term contracts young so that you have cost control for 6-8 years, and let them develop together into a team. Which works for Major League Baseball, where no matter how much you stink, you don't get kicked out of the league, meaning your revenue is more or less consistent year on year. Relegation makes that an insanely difficult strategy because if you mess up, have one draw that should have been a win or one loss that should have been a draw, you're down and your entire revenue structure and pay wage structure is screwed.
Yeah I was telling my friend the other day something similar, he's running it like the NBA, teams tank the season so they can maybe get the No1 draft pick, this would be a legit strategy to rebuild the team. He's probably thinking, let's just spend money and buy 10 of those and we'd be all set.

This is spot on, except in Baseball you'd be doing it through the draft rather than signing expensive free agents. But I agree the premise is similar, football is just too short term and chaotic for that approach

I think some of the concern is they've been rubbish against teams that are likely to finish the season pretty poorly. Their only win is against Luton and they are complete fodder for the rest of the league. There seems to be a sense of urgency over this patch because starting in about a month it's one big match after another and it could get ugly.

I understand Chelseas challenge of having young players and that it requires time. But rival fans and pundits aside, that 1Bil spending will hover over their heads like a dark cloud. The fact that the players are young makes it worse since the younger you are, the more gullible and impressionable you are and that will affect them. That's a huge risk Chelsea have taken and sadly, its partially out of their control. There's only do much you can do as a club to manage a players mentality.
