    At the beginning of the season, Jerry Krause told Phil Jackson it would be his last season. Then he announced it publicly. Krause even said that if the Bulls went 82-0, Phil wouldn't be back. He made it very clear: Phil would not return. So all season, Phil had it in his mind that this would be his last season. That was his mindset. Then, after the season, Jerry Reinsdorf says "Hey, why don't you come back?" ... By that time, Phil had had enough of the BS with Krause. I think he was ready for a change.

  • @Psychos1s
    @Psychos1s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    The documentary answered these questions. 1) Reinsdorf didn't want to pay Pippen, Rodman and other players their market value at that point. 2) Phil wasn't going to coach a rebuild of the team without the players of #1. 3) Jordan wasn't going to play without Phil. In otherwords you can't have 3 without 2 without 1. Edit* Jordan would have come back if the team was left in tact for a shot at a 7th championship.

      @dohpe- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@pathfinder375 even if the expense exceeded the income, the valuation of the entire business increases in relation to the success. Over the course of that decade, the profits and valuation of the team went through the roof. Maybe Reinsdorf takes an operating loss for a year or two, but in return his entire business is worth more. Crazy enough, in this case it was most likely a reverse of the old adage. He was in such a good position, he essentially had two birds in the hand and one in the bush, yet somehow left with only a two piece meal.

      According to an article I read online, the Bulls owner made even more profit the year after even though it was lockout-shortened, no playoffs and with the worst team in the league.
      Krause really cleared salary space.
      Sad, but true.
      Should’ve just gone for one more year anyway. Rebuilding would’ve come soon enough.

It sounds nice now, and it's easy to say now, but look at the situation, look at what Pippen did, look at how he handled his anger over his contract already, and you'll see there's no chance Scottie is a Bull the next year, Jordan or no Jordan.

      But it was already after being told he wouldn't be back at the beginning of the year, so he coached that year with the expectation he was leaving. It might have bern different had Reinsdorf told him in Montana the summer before that he wanted him for 2 or 3 more years. But now, to wait until this point, after Krause had already made his declaration, it wouldn't be fair to either of them.

Then Reinsdorf offered Phil a 1-year contract, but to coach a rebuilding team. Reinsdorf was willing to pay MJ, but nobody else and it's pretty obvious he's so cheap; that all the other key members were gonna sign elsewhere.

      I could had seen the role players taking a one year cheap contracts and the bird rule applied then... all one year contracts, the group would had agree into something and MJ could had taken a pay-cut. Money wasn’t the problem, as it could had been negotiated but the egos definitely played a big part. If Krause wasn’t saying this would be Phil’s last year, Phil might had taken another year contract and the real last dance would has been the 99 season.

    The 2 Jerry's broke the team up. I don't see how thats not clear. Krause was already courting Phil's replacement a year or so prior and Reinsdorf let Krause take the fall for his negligence as an owner. One Jerry was too cheap and the other was too egotistical. Not that hard to figure out imo. Reinsdorf used money as an excuse but Jordan maintains that he could've convinced the players who's value went up to take one year deals(probably all at a discount price). Whether he could or not is a different conversation.

  • @akikisetsu28

    Reinsdorf before Krause and then Jackson, ran the Bulls like Sterling ran the Clippers. Why weren't they able to prove it after the 98 team? They were both incharge. They are the only ones who can keep the bulls together. They can't blame phil, mj and the others. They have a different job description. Phil's job is to coach, the team's job is to play and it was front office's job to make sure to maintain a winning formula that was working for them.

Had the Bull stayed together MJ, Rodman, Pippen. That team would have beaten the Spurs. The Bulls centers combine would have been enough to beat Robinson and Duncan. The Only team that was an Legitimate threat to the Bulls was the Pacers! Jordan would have beaten them again. He would be (7-0) But God even Rest after (6) Destiny had ran it Course. Reinsdorf was cheap, and Krause felt slighted. in one of the episodes where they celebrate a title, Krause says "this is the greatest ORGANIZATION in the league! we have a great team, BUT the organization are the stars" (to that effect)! he hated that he was not considered a rockstar like the team. he felt the world looked at him like a background singer/groupie!

    1991 pippen sigmed a contract i think it was $18mil krause told pippen"If you sign this the contract is outmoted". Had waited another year he would have a had HUGE payday because 91-92 season contract money went through the roof and pippen was being underpaid by that point.
    But lets go back to the 97-98 season. Krause was tired of phil jackson and phil was sick of krauses bullshit, Jordan by this point was regretting coming back watch the 97-98 chicago bulls documentary unforgettabull . Pippen was done with krause rodman was rodman doing rodman things LOL , reinsdorf allegiance was to krause. If the bulls cameback for 1 more year the spurs would have defeated chicago mj would ride off into the sunset and retire rodman would either get traded or retire pippen would get traded steve kerr gets traded luc longley gets traded bill wennington and jud beuchler would also get traded. So the bulls would of been disassembled folloeing a finals loss and a rebuild would be needed it gives fans a chance to be thankful to watch that team from 1984-1999 and be in 6 of 7 finals win.
    The NBA has a new powerhouse teams in Lakers,Spurs,Pacers,76ers,Utah ,New jersey , Portland , and theres Sacramento kings with C webb. Giving fans a chance to watch young guys ascend and teams contend for a NBA title . The bulls loss gives way to a new era following mjs retirement provided he stays retired.

    They did kind of, for the lack of a better word, abandon the Krause subplot post episode 4. Then it became much more Michael centric and the other parts of the puzzle were put in the back burner 🤷‍♀️.

      9 of 11 ...he did not coach in 99 and in 94 he had less talent no expected to win and if not for a ref's call and star's ego may have made another finals so is really 9 of 10 and in 95 mj came back so late and was out of shape so...and the guy who beat him in 95 shaq helped win him 3 more and one of the guys that won in 94 helped as well in horry..kind of ironic...phil jackson won his rings without a star point guard or even a top 6-7 pg in the league...pgs are overrated
