  • This is Part 5 of my Sycamore bonsai. (Acer Pseudoplatanus) I found this tree in the garden and dug it up in early 2017. This video shows it growing throughout the the last year and you can see the leaves are a lot smaller than a full size tree

    Definitely a good shout leaving it unpruned this time. Hopefully it will rock out and make up for last years bad conditions.

      It is looking fantastic after the new pot. The roots were great and the shape is doing its own thing

    Broski this tree is gangsta. Nice work minimizing leaves so much already. There is hope for my plane trees. The trunk line and unbalanced canopy are really attractive i picture it leaning over a pond.

      Cheers bro. Your plane will hopefully do the same

    Those leaves are reducing nicely and that wound is healing well. Looking good. Thanks, keep growing

      Cheers Matt, yeah that wound really has healed up nicely so far

    Daggum, that leaf reduction is mind blowing. Hell of a job, brother. Your “acer” looks fantastic.

    That's great leaf reduction and a nice form. I don't mind it being one-sided but that one obtuse junction in the apex caught my eye. I hope it grows better this year so that you have more options.

      cheers, yeah its still far from perfect, but its getting there

    I really like that you don't wire the roots in. Especially with how hard you cut them back.
    My googie-search says the black spots are Sycamore Tarspot fungus. But I'm not a botanist, so take that in consideration also.
    Nice work though, really enjoy these videos and how you show the entire year for each tree.

      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      cheers. i am sure there are plenty screaming at their screens seeing me not bother with the wire haha. and yeah i think that tarspot is probbaly what it is.

    This tree is definitely looking cooler each year.
    Pity about the leaf infection, but hey that's another great advantage of deciduous trees, as they shed their old leaves each year you don't have to worry about the infection. Also you didn't repot it this year so it should grow really vigorously - perhaps worth defoliating in summer, might help avoid a repeat infection? Not sure.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cheers Dave. with the lack of repotting i am hoping it goes crazy this year and allows me to prune it a few times ...and if it gets infected, i might just defoliate it

    I don't think I've seen a Sycamore maple in real life. I really like the leaf shape - texture reminds me of raspberry a bit. Working with self-sown trees is great. They are so much more robust. Even if you have to fight with that vigour a bit, you can do a lot with them. This will make a fantastic tree.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Sue, yeah they are a little bit similar to raspberry. I might have to show that in the next video as there is bush pretty much right next to where this tree sits!

    Nice tree looks like its coming along nicely. Those black spots are caused by a disease called tar spot very common in sycamores and its totally harmless.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cheers. yeah i think thats is what it is, at least its harmless

  • @stormdrifter7904
    @stormdrifter7904 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The black spots are tar spot, caused by Rhytisma acerinum, a fungus. It’s not a big deal; you see it on wild trees all the time and it just causes slightly early leaf fall

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers, yeah i had seen it about in the parks, so i assumed it was nothing to worry about :)

    Very neat - how often do you water a tree like this?

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i just water when it needs it... which is ridiculous sounding. read this - www.backgardenbonsai.com/how-to-water-a-bonsai/
      it will help you work out when it needs done. basically you just have to learn to know when it is time or not, rather than work on set timescale

    Those black spots on leaves are normal, almost all sycamores get them its just a fungi that lives in leaves... also the "weed" you pulled out from the pot were sycamore/maple seedlings...

      cheers. and yes i didnt even notice it was seeding hahah. i was editting this in a tiny window, should have made it full screen to see it properly

    Tough species to work with, I think when you get the structure right it will be a winter special....

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cheers I think so too, or maybe even a first week of spring special. some of the internodes can be a little too long. so some nice tiny fresh leaves can hide that away haha

      @@BackGardenBonsai These are happy to be defoliated a couple of times a year. That will give you some small leaves.
