I loved this story. I hope the tree is never cut down.

That’s awesome that his tree is still there ! I love the fact that he planted it when he returned home. Hope it continues to stand for many years to come.

Sadly the house and tree are still threatened with demolition. They have no protected status. Local historical org is fighting to get city council to vote to protect. Not sure why the news piece doesn't reference this key crucial fact.

BEAUTIFUL, poignant and fitting. Hate knows no boundaries, but love reaches the deepest of pits, and ALWAYS wins.

Why have I never heard of Cornelius Johnson or the Gold medal tree. I love this education I just got!

There isn’t a lot of history known about him unfortunately. He was the first African American to win gold in the 36 Olympics but came home to struggle with finding work. He ended up working on a boat I believe as a chef and got sick at sea and passed away. I’ve been fortunate enough to get a couple of original press photos of him from those Olympics but unfortunately haven’t been able to gather much more.

This is a beautiful story that should be seen by many more people. On my next visit to L.A. I am going to see that tree and to leave my own congratulatory medal on the fence by it.

What a powerful story! Hoping more people will have the opportunity to learn about an American Olympic Hero during the Berlin Games.

Great story, learned a lot about Johnson, one of the lesser remembered heroes of the Berlin Olympics. In the mid fifties, I attended Hendon Grammar School in London. We had the Whitlock oak growing there, given to the school by a former student, Harold Whitlock, who won the 50K walk in Berlin.

The house and tree are still threatened with demolition. There is no formal protection for this tree. Should have included how to help protect it! Contact city council member Heather Hutt and demand a vote to protect this tree and it's legacy. Terrible reporting, blown opportunity of national coverage to help out here.

Pretty sure that "demanding" anything from a council member will not be received that well. 🤔
If you want something positive done about the tree, perhaps offer more detailed, constructive advice?
