EDIT: Wow, it's been nine years. Anyway, according to the comments, Wrex has some line variations referencing his family armor (if you didn't get it), the bomb on tuchanka (if you let it explode) or the Virmire Survivor (if you kill them on the citadel).

Huge props to Bioware for actually delaying this confrontation. This confrontation only happens near the end of the game and many people either won't have save backups that far back or won't be willing to replay most of the game. It makes you actually live with your decision.
I've played through man effect 1-3 so many times and I've just never had the heart to kill or Betray my Krogan bro
Makes sense this takes place after rannoch, since tali can potentially die in that mission. By this point you have killed 3 goated squadmates.
The only thing I thought they missed out on was having an option where Shepard explains to Wrex that the war has finally broken them. That the years of fighting and making the hard choices made them betray a friend in the name of the greater good. And Wrex seems shocked and saddened by this and his gun lowers as he commiserates with Shepard that even the best leaders can be broken due to loss. And for a while it looks like you're winning him over and everything will work out. It's the power of friendship. Then Shepard asks that Wrex only take vengeance on him/her and not forsake the rest of the galaxy because his friend became a broken person. And Wrex tearfully vows that he'll help Hackett fight off the Reapers. Then he shoots you in the face.
It was never a way to diffuse the situation. It was a nonstandard game-over the whole time.
It's also scary how randomly this event happens,
I remember getting to the citadel after having completely forgotten about betraying Wrex, and then the door opens and I'm like "Uh oh".
I have never done this but so... it just happens randomly after visiting the citadel a few times right? Or like doing a couple missions and coming back?

Krogan overpopulation incoming. Morality wise curing the genophage is the right choice, but Is it the best for the galaxy in the long run? I don't think so.
Not necessarily true. It really depends on who is the leader. If Wrex is leading the Krogan, then yes, in the long run it still would pay off. If Wreav was leading the Krogans, no. That would not end well in the long run.
Dodging Wrex's shot should have been an interrupt. If you didn't take it, you would get a non-standard game over.

+Johannes Fritsche _OR_ you can get the support of both races by leaving Wrex alive and delivering the cure. Salarians will be angry at first but after Cerberus raids The Citadel, they'll suddenly be very eager to help. I'm not sure if this depends on whether or not you killed the old council in ME1, though.

To get this you don't just betray Wrex but Mordin as well. To me no fleet is worth betraying 2 good friends.

I remember Wrex being so happy after the cure. He called Shepard sister and they were going to sing songs about this. I didn't betray him because this scene is so sad after that rejoicing.

I could imagine her thinking back to what she said and subconsciously mouthing out the words. I've done it sometimes.

This scene hurts even worse if you picked Kaidan to live in ME1. "What's the matter, Ashley not around to do your dirty work? Oh that's right. You killed her too!"

I guess that make sense since i'm pretty sure Ashley tries to kill Wrex on Virmire if you gave her the order to do so.

actually you don't need to kill Mordin to sabotage the Cure, you just need to use Paragon/Renegade lines.
That only works if Wrex and Eve are dead at that point.
I wonder why Shepard doesn't use the plot penetrating rounds more often. They can get past armor, shields and a Krogan Battlemaster's resistance. Where do I get those?

What really hurts is when you tell Bailey Wrex just went nuts, and Bailey says it’s because of the genophage. That dismissal of Wrex’s people with an off-hand line about such a terrible thing, the thing which you were supposed to fix, which does end up killing them (shown in the end credits if the genophage isn’t cured, I think).
Has anyone noticed that Shepard's mouth moves as the audio log says, "If I sabotage the cure."
goreycinema It's probably because voices have to come from an actor (usually for long range conversations the actor is hidden inside a wall) and the Shepard who says this and your PC were switched by mistake by the devs

Yeah they have use the same technology software than Valve in their game. When someone speak and the NPC or player character voice is eight there, he or she move his lips. Is effective but in case like this is not. And long range conversation, most of the case used a character behind in somewhere and he is represent in the hologram in base the real hide.

This is one reason I can never, no matter how hard I try, play a bad character because I don't want to hurt the feelings of NPCs.

7 years later, just beat ME3 for the first time. Couldn’t imagine anyone betraying Wrex.
I don't know what's worse, betraying Wrex and letting this unfold, or the fact that they probably space his corpse.
I could never EVER betray Wrex. This would mean I would betray a friend. And I could AND would never betray a friend, even if I'd get help from another for doing this.

What makes this even worse is that to get to this, you would also had to kill Mordin in cold blood to stop him from fixing the sabotage and releasing the cure for te genophage. This version of Shep is a monster.
Nope. By killing wrex and mordin you save billions because the krogan will quickly outnumber and wage war on other species. They nuked the hell out of their own world. Shep sacrifices 2 of his friends for the best outcome.
@ Kickabarrel - actually you can cure the genophage and still get Salarian aid. You need Thane or Kirrahe alive to save the Salarian councillor, and then he will override the Dalatrass and you get the Salarian war assets.
+eyraxy98 Thane would have died in a matter of weeks any way, the game made that clear, at least that way he dies like a boss.
PsyrenXY How the heck do you keep Kirrahe? I thought he inevitably died on Virmire. Or was that him on the Normandy with the other salarians after the mission??
Kaila Young on Virmire you have to disrupt the communications terminal, destroy the satellite uplink tower, destroy the Geth flyers and refueling station, and disable the alarms (not send them to the other side). That will keep Kirrahe and his team alive.
Also I think you have to save whoever is at the AA Tower but I’m not 100% sure on that one
I don't remember all the details lol but all I do remember is that I had Kaidan set the nuke and Ashley went with Kirrahe... and I... saved... KaiOH MY GOSH KIRRAHE IS DEAD
DAMN, so THAT'S what that scene looks like. I could never have done that to Wrex, but I'm glad I got to see it. Because MAN, that is an amazing scene.
I realized in the "cure the genophage" mission that I would never be able to play as full on renegade for two reasons: I would not be able to betray Wrex or shoot Mordin.
You can convince Mordin to not cure the genophage so he survives. I'm not sure what the requirements are though.
@@DiggitySlice There are two requirements to persuade Mordin not to cure the genophage: first, either Shepard or Ashley must have killed Wrex on Virmire back in ME1, so Wreav becomes the leader of the krogan later. Then, in ME2, Maelon's research data must have been destroyed, which will eventually cause Eve's death in ME3 due to the stress of the cure. With both Wrex and Eve dead, Shepard can Charm or Intimidate Mordin by pointing out that Wreav as sole leader of the krogan would just make things worse if the genophage were cured.

there was one dialogue missing, one where he says something along the lines of "And that was for the bomb! The one you couldn't be bothered to deal with!" he says it if you ignore the bomb mission and it blows up.
lol, only Wrex can deny Shepard's paragon/renegade dialogue option. "Words are not gonna cut it this time!"
I just noticed that when the recording says "If I sabotage the cure" (at 0:23), Shepard actually says it, it's lip-synched.You can see her cheeks and jaw moving. :)
Just going through a play through where this happened.
Some thoughts.
Firstly its super odd no one says anything about it. Except Garrus later. (Wrex's name is added to the casualty list). The announcement you get in the mail says Wrex is a krogan mercenary who attacked an alliance soldier over a gambling debt. Which...sure yeah coverup? But there is a disconnect between that-and one Wrex ought to be a public figure, Wrex himself is mentioned on radio casts as being in charge of the Krogan. Secondly, there are a lot of people on the docks-the cut scene indicates next to nobody is there. Which yeah, plot issues I guess-but people know who Shepard is, and Wrex plays a recording, so...there would be a lot of witnesses who saw what actually happened. The cutscene flat out contradicts this, because then the "krogan mercenary killed over gambling dispute" doesn't hold water.
Another issue I have is Wrex asks what Shepard did, despite you know knowing it? There's no difference in your response-not even the renegade option. Somehow Shepard dodges a shotgun blast at point blank range. I guess you could argue Wrex is just devastated and is airing his rage and fury, "I know what you did"-as an expression of his only power over the situation. Which...yeah that's a stunningly powerful line. Still, why even do that? Why not just shoot Shepard then and there without any words?
Besides Garrus, no one else mentions it. Not Tali, Liara, or Ashley. No one asks, "what happened?" "what did you do?"
Not only is this frustrating due to lack of dialogue, but given EDI makes a point about disobeying orders on moral grounds-it would have been intriguing if someone had actually complained or confronted Shepard about it.
You killed a friend, a brother, and killed his species. All for what, a few space frogs help with their fleets and scientists. This ain’t worth the sacrifice right there

Idk, I know it’s tough to do but I think if we put aside our own love of wrex this is a stronger narrative point especially for a renegade shep who has been willing to do anything to save the galaxy for 3 games, if this was a long running tv show I’d want this twist it adds drama and consequences
Yeah, but videogames aren't experienced like tv series does, because you yourself provoked this outcome, it really makes me wonder how are they going to do a TV series out of this... Are they going to stick to Paragon Shepard or Renegade Shepard?

But to answer your question, I had an idea, they should do paragon in first, a conflicted Shepard in 2nd, and darth vader Shepard on the 3rd. Same storyline, without the sidequests, try to include sidequest that are important like the earth moon where EDI woke up, and change a bit mass effect 3 storyline, instead of them appearing in missions just as side quest, make shepard go rescue them. And his role, just mash them all together, except engineer and vanguard. And when shepard is angry make him/her explode in rage with overcharged L5 implants, Aria + Jack powers, like aria did in me3 omega dlc. The romance though Tali, for both male and female shep, main heroine should be Liara, but I think Tali would make everyone just dying to see her without mask and her suit, and most will not expect it. I got more but that long enough, what you think?

Yeah, wow. I remembered the part of ME2 where Chakwas told you that your scars would heal or worsen depending on your state of mind (i.e. Paragon/Renegade), but I had no idea it got THAT bad! You can pay for Chakwas to give you cosmetic surgery to make you look normal if you're a Renegade, which is what I did, and I can see I made a VERY good decision.
I never saw this series of events. In all of my games, all of my playthroughs, there were two characters whom I NEVER betrayed. Wrex was by far at the top of my list. No matter how bad things got, no matter much the odds were stacked against me; I ALWAYS had Wrex's back, because he ALWAYS HAD MINE!
My only question with this line of actions. How were they able to kill a Krogan Battlemaster so incredibly easily?
There is also alternative dialogues if you destroyed Maelon's Research data and the dialogues depends on weither you apologized for destroying it or not.
If you did not apologized: "I should have known not to trust you! The war starts here!"
If you apologized: "So your apology for Maelon's data was just another lie?! Well, the war starts here!!"

Such a dumb decision as well. The Krogon are worth WAY more resource wise than the Salarians are. Plus the Turians needed them to fight on Palaven. The Salarians aren't any good for that.
Not really. The Krogan are only good as shock troops for ground combat. Useful in ground battles on invaded planets but not for much else, since they don't even have a fleet.
Meanwhile the Salarians have a decent size fleet and the best scientists in the galaxy, which is far more useful to actually winning the war.
Of course the paragon option still gets Salarian support later anyway, but if it was a true choice then Salarians would be by far an objectively better one.
I don't know about that, resolution of war are determined by scientific advantages, victory is determined by logistics. You COULD argue that the salarian fleet is far more useful. But over the course of human history, its been proven just how valuable boots on the ground are despite the leaps and bounds we've made in more complex weapon systems.
Krogans are natural born fighters, and most if not all are experienced warriors. In a game of violence and numbers, the krogans will come out as a far more valuable asset, again, not accounting for spaceships.
Wotan Here's the bottom line. Earth needs Palaven's fleet. The Turians won't help Earth unless they get Krogan boots on the ground to help evacuate Palaven and wage ground campaigns against the Reapers. No Krogan means no Turian fleet for Earth, especially once Wrex withdraws his support.
Salarians are not suited to wage frontline ground campaigns so they are all but useless in evacuating Palaven and all but useless in frontline combat against the reapers. Their specialty is stealth, surgical strikes, and sabotage, which to quote Matriach Aetheyta is about as useful against the Reapers as "tits on a hanar" Also the Turians don't need the Salarians' ships....they have the largest professional military fleet in the galaxy. What they need is more frontline ground troops.
So yes if you were just choosing one over the other, the Salarians may be more useful. But when you consider the needs of the Turian fleet the Krogan are more useful by far.
+Wotan that's what's annoying about Mass Effect, if you choose to be a Renegade you get absolutely shit results, so if you want the best things to happen you end up having to pick Paragon options even if you think the dialogue choice is stupid.

I feel worse when Renegade Shepard shoots Mordin on Tuchanka. I mean, this is bad but I feel that betraying Mordin like that is worse. Thinking about it, a renegade shep could end up shooting Wrex, and Mordin, and the Virmire Survivor.

And after THAT you stab him in the back. Wrex saw you as kin, as his greatest friend and ally... and you repay that by wiping out his people...He wanted to change the krogan, he wanted them to have a future, to be a part of the galaxy again. he was an idealist, a visionary and a diplomat.
And how is he treated? His corpse isspaced... after he 'went insane' for 'no reason'.

I actually love the conflict if you betray Wrex. It's very dramatic, and sabotaging the cure is not completely unjustifiable. The majority of Krogan you meet in the ME universe are _not like Wrex_ - he's atypical. Frankly, most of them are brutes that want nothing more than to kill - they don't care who they're working for or why.
The Krogan plunged the galaxy into total war once. Can you really be certain they'll never do it again? When the Council races are bloodied and battered after the Reaper War is over, will the Krogan push for war against Wrex's wishes? Wrex isn't omnipotent. And if Wrex and Eve do manage to lead the Krogan in a more peaceful direction, then that's wonderful... but they're not immortal, and how do we know that the Krogan will hold to their philosophy once they're gone?
Wrex is completely justified in his desperation to save his people. He is singleminded in his determination. Shepard might believe both Krogan and Salarian support is needed to save Earth and see only one way to get it. It's a battle of wills between two people who absolutely will not back down, and it's inevitable someone's gonna die. It's a very ugly situation but a very compelling one.
Man I could never do that to my boy wrex. Especially after seeing him and the other krogan so excited thinking it was cured then for this to happen later. I wish i could play a renegade run but I don't know how I could it makes me too sad lmao. People say it's the "right" thing but wrex has the power and spirit to change krogan ways. The genophage makes them act the way they do. It's psychological warfare too, not just biological. So curing doesn't necessarily mean endless violent krogan armies destroying the galaxy.
I agree that is the right thing to do, at least for Wrex because of what you said about his potential to bring a brighter future for the Krogan.
On the other hand, I do believe it’s “temporarily right” to sabotage if it’s Wreav and Eve’s dead, because he’s the exact opposite of what Wrex can bring both to the Krogan and the galaxy.
The genophage doesn't make them violent, though. They were violent before, hence getting the genophage enacted. You also see it in their biology, where Grunt's "puberty" is him getting excited about murdering people. Seems to be a lot of factors outside just the genophage.

@@pickledparsleyparty The thing that always turned me off to control/synthesis is that both of those choices are parroted by indoctrinated people. Saren basically pushed for Synthesis throughout mass effect 1, and TIM was trying for Control. It leads me to believe that (whether BW intended this or not) doing anything other than 'destroy' was just playing into the reapers hand. You have to assume they're ok with Saren or TIM winning out over the 'destroy' people, otherwise they wouldn't be indoctrinated. Just my 2 cents.
David Rosensin Dialogue hints at TIM having the right idea all along, just going about it wrong and being indoctrinated in the process. Mind you, it throws this dialogue at you at the very end, which feels kind of cheap, they should’ve foreshadowed it in someway.
For all the shit the ending(s) gets, either of the 3 choices have their ups and downs if you think on them too long. My only issue with Destroy is that it’s obviously coded renegade (Control + Synthesis are fairly flexible) because why go through the effort of defending the Geth or even ending a war between the Geth and Quarians (and in turn helping the Quarians prosper much quicker than they would have without the Geth) and then just being like “You actually have to die now, oops.” It makes more sense if you destroyed the Geth in the process.
@@KendylTV I don't know, going about control "right" would probably entail a lot more than just holding two sticks and "controlling" the reaper. Seems suspicious. I agree with the earlier commentor. Both Control and Synthesis both feel like the reapers winning, while claiming you won and are in control. If i was the reapers, that's what i would do. Make the child think they have the controller, meanwhile it's not actually plugged into the console.
just imagine this, you are sitting on a couch waiting for a family member to come through too visit then you hear some screaming and gunshot's up top you ask someone what is going on before you see a huge krogan fall through down unto a table breaking it and dying

Plot armour.
Shotguns don't have nearly as much spread as you think. Try skeet shooting and you're likely to miss.

Shepard: Oh like the Asari Commandoes that are doing so well against the un-hackable and fully synthetic Reaper threat?
Salarian: Oh...well we have advanced warships!
Shepard: Yes like the ones that are torn apart by the Reaper's laser beams? Besides I just found an entire fleet hanging around on a few planets. Do you at least have good ground troops?
Salarians: ...we have Krogan-wait...whoops.
Never knew this was even a cutscene. I mean, has anyone even considered the Salarian deal seriously? Probably one of the worst decisions in a Mass Effect game, it's either the choice that makes sense or the choice you make just because their needs to be an "evil" option even if it's more like a "shooting yourself in the knee and pissing a tiger off in the process so he chews the other knee off later" option.
Why don't you think it makes sense? From a purely ruthless, practical perspective it's the only way to get the maximum amount of support for the war.
@@Zomdra Ignore that this is a game and it's all about making a number go higher, actually think about the logic behind what the Salarians want and what they put on the table. If you take their deal, the Krogan race is as good as dead. Tricking them into thinking the genophage is cured is tricking them into their own genocide. And the Salarians have decided that the possibility of all Krogans dying out is the cost of their support. They will not help you if you don't let the Krogans get genocided. And that's putting aside the possibility of them discovering the treachery, like what happens here, making the situation even worse.
But alright, you want to sacrifice an entire species, what do you get in return? Some spy planes that aren't going to work because the most advanced stealth frigate in the entire galaxy, the Normandy, barely escapes the notice of the reapers(and Cerberus built the damn thing so they probably also know a thing or two about stealth ships), and the objectively weakest military in terms of brute strength. Honestly, the game should give you like 50 points of readiness for full Salarian support because none of their strengths are applicable here, they're just a thin layer of meat to slow the reapers down a couple of weeks. Hell, the Salarians themselves know this and end up joining with you anyways no matter your decision.
Yeah, in a war like this, sacrifices do sometimes have to be made, but in this situation, either A. the Salarians wouldn't be so dumb as to ride a grudge straight to their graves, or B. if they are, it doesn't matter because ultimately you were only going to do marginally better with them on your side, and they are at less risk of dying out as a species after this war. Even if your a ruthless and strictly practical Shepherd, you'd have to be kind of an idiot to see the death of an entire species worth the support of the one military who are the least prepared for a foe like the reapers, and will most likely end up joining anyways due to that.
@@Monomiknose They were thinking about the long term consequences, Wrex presents a different threat in his progressive nature means they would quickly rally races around them to oust the Salarian who have done things to maintain their base of power through sabotage and engineered long term extinctions if they are deemed uncontrollable (see the Yahg). Wrex may even allow the Yahg to become part of the Krogan people given their obedience toward stronger groups.

Missed oportunity to add his line about the bomb if you allowed it to explode (that could have been to add the cherry on top of this unfortunate situation if you decide to give your back to the Salarians when Wrex is the Krogan leader).
For my Shepard it was the Dalatrass who pissed her off. If she'd just said 'if you cure the Genophage, you won't get our support' it would be one thing. But the idea of lying about giving the Krogan hope made her sick. The contempt she had for the Krogan, rather than admitting their mistake and showing a bit of respect.
If anything she would have told Wrex straight up it wasn't gonna happen.
Disappointed you can't get shot by Wrex though. It's the least Shepard deserves, even if it's non-fatal.
That would have been good for otherwise Paragon Shepards. Bearing the wound with dignity or some such iunno.

I played now as a renegade or evil Shepard but there are some choices i just cant focking do like this i could never do this to wrex cause even if u are a bad shepard, he and wrex are like best mates (plus garrus he dont realy care if u play paragon or renegade but still)

I’ve always believed that Wrex wants to die here, and is the reasoning for confronting Shepard in front of C-Sec without any Krogan backup. He was too devastated to learn about the betrayal, his people again not having a future, and his efforts having been for nothing

Having recently discovered this scene I wanted to see if there was a scene where Shepard gets blasted.

It hurts extra hard when you tell Bailey he went nuts and Bailey mentions that the Genophage makes them screwy and they snap. Bailey has no idea Shepard betrayed Wrex but he still unknowingly gives you one last reminder that the Krogan are doomed forever because of your actions.
Well, maybe not doomed to extinction. Mordin makes it clear in ME2 that the Genophage isn't a sterility plague; it reduces Krogan fertility to a level that just about allows them to maintain their population. And Mordin actually needed to modify it to compensate for Krogan adaptive evolution reducing it's efficacy. Cure or no cure, the Krogan will eventually overcome the Genophage unless it's modified again.

the played the wrong audio they played the audio of the dalatrass NOT the audio of the Dalatrass actually thanking Shepard for sabotaging the genophage so with what they did shepard could EASILY convince him not too kill her and to stay in the war

Thanks for posting this so I never have to do it, I think I've done 4 or 5 play throughs of ME3 and I have never not cured the genophage. Krogan are too badass

I don't agree with the Korgans way but I believe in Wrex. I can't understand betraying him.
Wrex is smart and pragmatic and has a plan for a Krogan renaissance that doesn't involve violent conquest... but Wrex isn't going to live forever. When he's gone, are the Krogan going to stay true to his vision, or slide back into barbarous violence? Curing the genophage is putting a _lot_ of trust in the Krogan. Remember they plunged the known galaxy into total war before... they could do it again.
Hell, it could go wrong sooner rather than later. With the Council races bloodied and battered after the Reaper War, the more aggressive Krogan clans could push for war against Wrex's wishes... and can we be sure he'd be able to stop them?

You get different diolauge if you do the renegade option and didn't get his family armor or if you killed Ashley in the citidel mission
What's even worse is the symbolism in how easy it was for Shepard to kill Wrex. This pretty much applies only to people on hardcore or insanity. If you're familiar, higher difficulties (abhorrently, in my opinion) give enemies in the game way more health. Entire clips could be spent trying to kill the most basic of enemies. Instead, when Shepard shoots Wrex, he only goes down in less than a clip's worth of ammo; playing into the reality that Shepard didn't just defend themselves from an enemy....but selfishly killed a friend.
For me, the conversations on the ship about this scene triggered sooner than the actual scene. Then, next I visited the Citadel, this triggered as well.

It's difficult to tell from the back, but watch her cheeks and jawline - you can see them moving. Must be a coding glitch or something: "If Shepard Dialogue plays, then lip-sync Facial Model"
