In the first round, Finland was actually a very reasonable guess, since 'järvi' (in Jukkasjärvi) is the Finnish word for 'lake'. Northeastern Sweden has a lot of Finnish place names. 'Jukka' is a Finnish man's name, but in Finnish "Jukka's lake" is 'Jukanjärvi'. So 'Jukkasjärvi' is just the same, but in Swedish orthography (ie. Jukkasjärvi = Jukka's järvi). I wonder why it wasn't called Jukkassjö in Swedish. 'Sjö' is Swedish for lake.

The name Jukkasjärvi is of Sami origin. Coming from the Northern Sami name Čohkkirasjávri meaning lake of assembly. Then Finnish speaking settlers moved to the area and changed the name to the Finnish Jukkasjärvi
