      Except the range isn't impressive at ALL per kwh of capacity and neither is those charging speeds for 2024 or 2025 model year evs.
      Tesla is better in both categories since 2019 now with 3&Y, and the Koreans also since 2021 have better specs than these do.
      Personally imo geely should convince the merc leadership to offer these in the U.S. through the dealerships.
      I bet the smart #1 if priced under 35k, even without tax credit access would still sell decently locally.
      And the obviously much more upscale looking #3 could also do quite well here.
      Even without the tax credit access, or only make it available on leases as the loophole exists for that. As many luxury segment cars already are leased not purchased.
      Also geely could cheat like Volvo and offset some of the import tariffs by exporting us built Mercedes.👍🏻

      @@4literv6 I don't think these would sell well in the US, small cars don't sell well at all.

    • @4literv6
      @4literv6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheFPSPower they could sell tens of thousands of them easily. Hundreds of thousands though no not likely.
      The entire compact segment depending on the year over here you look? Is 350-500,000 in total annual sales.
      But evs also open up new market opportunities(tesla will blow this wide open in 2025 with the 25k compacts.
      As no premium/luxury segment compact compact suv/cuv evs are really available here today anyway. Hence why I said what I did. 👍🏻
      Selling them through merc dealers would give people some confidence, falsely placed maybe?
      But still more confidence than a china only ev brand has, that they could get them serviced, repaired and any warranty recall work done.

    The Smart EVs are based on Geely's SEA platform; the new Mini Cooper EVs are based on Great Wall Motor's ME platform; Volkswagen will be using Xpeng's platform; and Audi will be using a platform developed by SAIC. • @BBingo-v5i
      @BBingo-v5i ปีที่แล้ว +6

      nah, first of all Smart and Mini Cooper always have been kinda independent from their mother brands so why not use additional cooperations for these side brands? Keeps production cost down and margins high. On the other hand both BMW and Mercedes will use their self-developed EV platforms for their own cars. And in fact both the cars and the EV platforms are better than the one from chinese brands. Audi will use PPE platform from Porsche for their bigger models. BTW Mercedes will anounce the CLA concept today which has the new MMA platform. The production model will be available at the end of next year. Compare the stats of the upcoming MMA platform, which will be the same platform and chassis for a new compact SUV (bigger than Smart #3 tho), to the Smart #3 or any of the chinese brands and it is just night and day. What chinese manufacturers nailed over the last years is the design and somewhat the build quality, but almost all of that was achieved with help of western designers and technology. CATL has some interessting batteries, but they sell them to every brand. So no advantage here. Research from US/UK/Germany has shown the potential of battery innovation in the west. Chinese brands lag hard in drivetrain and efficiency metrics tho. That is where german manufacturers still outshine others by a mile. The new CLA will consume 12kw/100km, that is another 10% lower than the new Model 3 highland, and the range will be over 750km/ 470miles for the max trim. The bigger and EV-only platform of Mercedes, which will follow soon after, might be even slightly better. Axial flux motor for the AMG models are interesting, too.

      @@wocaomade That is a comforting delusion. I almost bought this car. I test drove it several times in comparison with the Zeeker X. In the end, I chose the Zeeker X because of the zero gravity seats, built-in fridge, and cheaper price (I could get the Babos version performance for the same price as the standard Smart #3).
    Buying the Smart #3 in Europe is actually not bad, because the European version of Zeeker X does not have the zero gravity seats, sliding screen, or built-in fridge like the Chinese version.

    While I like Volvo EX30 interior and exterior more, I can't deny Smart#3 appears compelling choice. Interior and having a keyfob would be dealbreaker for me in Smart#3 - the bulged out middle with round openings makes interior look tiny. And ever since my Model 3, I don't want to carry a keyfob again.
    I would however be interested how Smart#3 media UI works over time. Volvo has Android Automotive which is arguably one of the best but my first impression of Smart#3 UI is positive as well.

      Mercedes-Benz is rolling out their small car segment for slightly more mainstream Smart. It's how things work these days. They need the real name for where the good margins are and let a "semi-name" trademark to deal with where the margins are not so great.

      @@nunagoras yeah, it’s the same reason the engines and gearboxes in the A-class and B-class are from Renaults, and the Citan small van-based people carrier is based on the Renault Kangoo; it’s all about profit margins.

      Yes, thanks to the software engeneering and the insane infotainment and touchscreen nonsense this is how the car industry is trying to rip us all off. I wonder when the car industry will give us EVs that are affordable, not overdesigned and reliable. What we keep seeing are new cars that are rather equipped with all the fancy electronics and expensive stuff. We are wasting resources because laptops and smartphones need to be replaced after 5 years reasoning the hardware is outdated and not compatible any more with the software standard. Are we going to see the same trend with these cars and will we have to dump these vehicles also after 5 years?

    I don't understand. The Zeekr has soft touch materials everywhere. Then this has hard in some places? Why is that? Why do they insist on that hard plastic at Mercedes if Zeekr shows you don't have to use it.

    • @TD1237
      @TD1237 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Zeekr's interior appears to have nicer materials than most Mercedes. So, if they did the same here, Mercedes might be sh-ooting themselves in the foot. Just my guess.
