The problem with "Wheel of Fortune" is that it's always followed by "Jeopardy," so you go from pretty much holding your own and feeling pretty good about yourself to being totally lost and feeling like you should be in a zoo exhibit flinging your poo at hapless tourists.

Or you go from thinking everyone is about the same level of intelligence to wondering why the contestants struggled with such easy questions. Why did you choose math for $1000 if you don't know the word fractions?!

My spouse was on Wheel of Fortune, when we were still dating, and it aired in September 1994. After taxes, the winnings paid for our wedding, my engagement ring, and our wedding rings.

back in the 90's I was in the audience and got paid for it as an "extra". They hired actors to make sure the audience looked the way they wanted it to look, but they did give tickets out to locals and tourists also. They filmed a whole week of shows in one day and it was a long day. We had to bring a change of clothes for each "day" and they rearranged our seating and dismissed the unpaid audience members after each show and brought in new people. We had to clap for 3 solid minutes in a very enthusiastic way while they recorded it and filmed us. that was the hard part! The next 3 days my hands were swollen! Vanna was friendly and nice, Pat was stand-offish and they gave us snacks that were not anything to write home about---granola bars broken in half and sodas. I made $425 for the day. There were probably 100-150 of us paid actors to fill the audience. It was a long day. 4AM to after 10PM. It was fun, but it wore you out. I understood at the end of the day why they recorded the clapping and took the pan of the audience early in the day!

The present hosts in the US, Pat Sajak and Vanna White, have been presenting the show together since the fall of 1982. Originally you used what you won for solving the puzzle to buy prizes from a showcase set up on stage. That was scrapped by the spring of 1989 when they found that playing for cash makes the game move faster, meaning more puzzles and more potential cash to be won.

To anyone who was confused by that one puzzle: the Before And After Puzzle works like this. There are two phrases in the puzzle. So what is Fair and Square Toe Boots is actually:
    Fair and Square
    AND
    Square Toe Boots
There is one word in common with both phrases that links the two together. In this case, it's Square. That's why it doesn't seem to make sense. :-)

I hope someone explained to them how the "Before & After" category works. You repeat a word to make two separate phrases. "Fair and Square" "Square toe boots" ....annnd, sometimes the people accidentally say it that way as they were trying to figure out the two different phrases in their head.....so when they solve, they lose by saying it wrong. It doesn't happen that often, but enough that you feel so bad for em.

The first time the letters randomly pop up to be solved is to decide who gets to introduce themselves first and they win $1,000. The second time is to decide who gets to spin first and they win $2,000. If a contestant doesn't win anything, he or she gets a minimum of $1,000. Once the big winner goes on to the final round he spins a smaller wheel to decide what he or she would win if they solve the puzzle. The amounts can range from $30,000 on up to $100,000 or a car. During one round on the big wheel is a spot labeled Million. If a contestant lands on this and guesses a letter on the board then that contestant picks up the million card. If he or she lands on bankrupt then they loose all their money during that round and the million card. If they have the million card and go to the final round then in place of the $100,000, a $1,000,000 prize is placed in the wheel. At least three times someone won the million. Several times someone couldn't guess the puzzle and their card was the million.
