He idled in front of him but neither could see each other around that small point. Then Todd boats up to him and "leans" on him. I can see why he got defensive, which is still childish. Childish on both parts
My son fished this High School tournament. It was the regionals competition for all of North Texas to qualify for State. What you experienced was unfortunate and I have spent 3 years with my son and his angler partner teaching them the proper way to conduct themselves on the water. Unfortunately, this goes both ways. While in a very small cut, 50 yards across or less, we were working the first point in, when one of the pro teams came ripping into the cove at high speed. The Angler cut the motor, hopped up front, while boat was still moving fast, pops down the Trolling motor and starts fishing the opposite side less than fifty feet from our boat. No courtesy was shown by that team at all. The Noise and the Wake created, rocked our boat like crazy...whatever fish were around weren't biting at that point. I spent 5 minutes explaining to my boys on the boat...don't be those guys.
I don’t feel like Todd is excluding professionals. I think he is just talking about people in general that don’t understand the unwritten etiquette on the water.
Thank goodness that for every jerk you meet on the water there are 25 that act courtesy and respect. We just have to hope that most of the bad ones are not in a position to be teaching young people. Thanks for the video Todd, best wishes to you. I hope to see you on the water one day.
There's definitely more good than bad but we are not immune to having some bad apples in the bunch! Definitely makes you more appreciative of the good ones.
I became a fan when you fished with Zona on his show waaaaaay back when. Please keep this stuff up, man. The videos. The “on the water” lessons that translate into life lessons off the water. The positive example of sharing info with other anglers. The encouragement of young anglers. The way you talk about your family. And, of course, the master class in putting fish in the boat. Your channel teaches me something, sometimes multiple things, in every video. Thanks, Todd!
You handled it like a champ. Kudos to you sir I’ll remember your reaction and response next time this type of thing happens to me again. Thanks for posting the interaction. I feel bad for those 2 kids had to witness the “adult” who is supposed to be mentoring to them. I do feel like 85% if the interactions I have with other bass anglers are respectful and positive it’s just those 10 to 15% who lack any class or professionalism. You were 100% in the right from how interpreted the event.
Great job. I have had my son in the boat fishing some of the High School tournaments in the past and had things like that happen to us a few times by both older and younger people. I had to remind myself that I was teaching my son and his partner a lesson and maintain my cool rather than being an ass. My son is now fishing by himself and he understands etiquette and common courtesy. Thanks for the video and keeping your cool in front of the kids. That ass is not their fault.
You are a class act .I don't fish for $ so I don't know how I would react with $ involved. The only thing I would have done differently would have done was when I was about a boa lengths from him I would have just went around him and started fishing again.Im to the point where I just expect people to do the wrong or ignorant thing. You are absolutely right these kids need good role models for sure.Hopefully some good will come from the video thanks for sharing.Never repay evil for evil but conquer evil with good.Todd your a good man.
I had that happen to me in my last tournament and after I brought it to his attention what he had done, he quickly left. My problem with the bad behavior that people demonstrate is that it is upsetting and unsettling, it took me another 10 minutes before I was able to refocus my efforts on fishing. Gotta agree with you Todd, bad manners and not doing what a responsible adult would do and teach the younger generation the rules on the water and how to respect others.
Unfortunately this is a very common scenario with the high school fishing. I've had so many of them pull in on top of me when they see you catch a fish, and they WILL NOT look at you when they do it. They know they're wrong when they do it, they just don't care. It gets even worse when fish are off shore. They'll idle directly over what you're fishing and never look at or acknowledge you.
struggle with this. used to fish VERY low level (club) tournaments. thought I wanted to be a competive angler. learned enough about the sport and myself to figure out: not me. not for me. it's tough out there. lots of folks. every day, all day. many of us 'just' recreational anglers looking to clear heads, 'get away' for possibly the one day we have on the water. so this morning, I headed over to a nearby lake (having decided to not fight the crowds on chickamauga)... to show up and of course, 'big high school tournament ' going on. just a local high school 'putting it on'. not part of the state 'schedule'. 81 boats. no ramp access. after my very long week of work, it was a bit disappointing. but, what you gonna do? several things that a lot of non-competitive folks struggle with: 1. ramp access/no room for anyone else. 2. freakin' blast-off. all those boats churning up the lake to 'get to their spots'. and finally 3: about mid-morning, the lake gets spun up once again as anglers are running/gunning 'looking for 5' or looking for that kicker... spots on lakes that do 'best' with quiet just continually get pounded with wakes and small spots are exposed again and again to teams/boats 'running in' or 'blasting out' ... and on top of all this? if you want to fish a spot, that 'sweet spot' or 'the juice'? you better hit it first... and don't expect to ease up on it. if you leave 'too much room' seems everyone figures they can just cut in, cut you off... cause you weren't on 'the spot'... lots of room for folks to get frustrated out there, whether recreational or competitive. seems to me that the place this starts is tournament directors and organizers: if they're only focused on 'their tournament' and not taking into account all those folks who also are trying to use that public water. i understand the dream. had it once myself. but also have seen so much poor behavior out there that I work really hard to stay as far away from folks as possible. very difficult to do.
Same guy that will pull into a fast-food drive thru and cut people off because he came in from a different way and instead of getting in line with everyone else, and then get mad when someone calls him out. Get in line with the flow of the rest wait your turn and have some sort of curtesy and teach the young men with you the right way to enjoy the water with everyone else. Same guy that would argue if the water was wet or just wett... Thanks for the content Todd keep putting these out there to help even one person.
Im glad you posted this to get the discussion rolling. Im the type to avoid boat traffic in an area altogether but every now and again there’s someone that will inevitably cut right in front of me when I’m going down a bank. The recent frustrating trend is how many of those times have been by high school boat captains with their kids on board. Same scenario where the kids recognize it and the boat captain acts like you don’t exist. Im all for getting the younger generation into fishing tournaments but the lack of etiquette drives me nuts and I hope it doesn’t stick with some of these kids. Words go a long away as well. If your man enough to ask me if you can slide ahead of me I’ll let you have it 99% of the time but when you cut someone off and act like you did nothing wrong that’s a whole different issue. I know it’s not possible due to the age restrictions but I think and would hope some of these high schoolers would make better moral choices by themselves on the water than their big ego boat captains.
You could not have handled that any better…extremely professional. It’s much harder to be respectful when you are in the right but that’s the example we need to make. Great job
HORRIBLE way of handling it. That guy was with his kids and Todd disrespected that man in front of his kids! Public water TODD, SHUT YOUR MOUTH and fish
You handled that very professionally. That's how you give our sport a great name. Teaching our youth is our job. Even during the tournament you stopped and helped and taught those young men. Be proud of what you did. I love your content. I told my grandson that I'm gonna make him watch this video he was all about it. Awesome job sir. Keep it up.
Blatant cut off. High School fishing needs an on-the-water ethics class for the anglers, coaches and boat drivers. Should be a requirement. Hopefully this would lead to more courtesy in the future. Not this guy, but I think some people are clueless.
Problem is there a lot of these people who will cut off others. They justify it by "I fished this spot yesterday" or "an hour ago" or "This has my brush pile on it" or "I live on this lake"
That’s something that could be done but I mean honestly if you need a class to understand what not to do, should you really even be there? Respecting someone else is common sense but this world really lacks that now days.
That’s the first boat parade I’ve ever fished… counted 10 boats in one small stretch. You did well keeping your cool. Showing my boy this vid. My kids and I never cut anyone off, the Pros showed us the same respect. Had a Pro come around, asked if we were Spot Locking on the point, we were, I said go on around, all good. Appreciate you asking. Our Aledo head coach, Troy Koonsman, put word out on respect and giving space, there will be a lot of boats on the bank. It happens, this is a good lesson.
Happens almost every time I go fishing. Best revenge is catching fish behind guys like that. I would have loved to seen what he would have done if you caught a 6 pounder on other side of his boat, lol. You handled it with class, and he didn't. Good on you Sir!
I'm subscribing to ur channel after watching this. Video popped up after watching Milliken. I don't tournament fish, I'm a new 12ft Jon boat owner, fished kayak before got my boat. I APPLAUD U SIR FOR THE WAY U HANDLE THAT ON CAMERA AND HOW U HANDLED IT ON TH-cam! I have never done anything like that to anybody on the water. I NEVER HAD TO BE TAUGHT THAT! IT'S COMMON SENSE AND COURTESY. Glad to see the good Lord rewarded you after that interaction. THIS IS MY FIRST EVER COMMENT ON TH-cam. I WISH U TIGHT LINES AND DOUBLE DIGITS BROTHER!
I get it man. This is super common in Ohio… every weekend.. every tournament.. I usually just move.. not worth the energy.. if they think it’s normal or okay then nothing I’m gonna say is going to change it
Reminds me of the old days fishing the island at lake St. Marys. But what I see more often is people in boats and jet ski`s run loops and showing off near fisherman and I do mean near Despite Ohio boating laws proclaiming that type of action unlawful.
Thank you for sharing this unfortunate experience and your concerns on your channel. I agree with you that I hope people will take time to consider the proper courtesies with each other not only on the water but in life in general.
It's so frustrating when that happens, I just keep my mouth shut and move on, but I'm just fishing for fun. You're a class act Todd, and that's what really matters.
Like you, I’m just fishing for fun as well. I had the exact same thing happen last weekend. I thought about just going around them and setting up right in front them just like they did me. But, in the end I decided it wasn’t worth it and just went on my way.
loved your response. A friend and I have fished a few tournaments. We were always under the impression that you need to be at least 50 yards from another boat before you can fish and in the opposite direction of the other boat. I hope you brought this up with the tournament director. The tournament director in the events we fished always had a "boaters meeting" before takeoff. With someone like that it might not make a difference but if the high school kids heard this and watched an adult still doing this it might have taught his dad a lesson. No matter what age, you should ALWAYS keep on learning.
There's alot to be learned from this video and really cool how you handled yourself in front of the young anglers and I'm sure they learned from it, thanks for sharing Todd!!
Such an important video! My sons and I are avid recreational anglers. The amount of times we get cut off, particularly the last couple of years, has exponentially grown. Sometimes, folks will sit down within feet of us. With high school and college tournaments now competing for space with local and regional tournaments, folks have to start focusing on how to share the resource ethically and with manners. Thanks!
in my experience boat fishing for the last 21 years, when I show up and see a bass club, or tournament going on I know these bass boats will be the rudest inconsiderate guys on the water, its like they think, their tourny is the only thing that matters, they will almost bump you out of your spot. I was fishing the Mississippi one day, I'm on some rip rap, been on it for a half mile, a pro bass gyuy pulls up a 1/4 mile away working towards me, I landed a nice big largemouth right in front of the guy, I was happy so I held it up and showed him, He then fired up his boat, came right at me and turned pushing a huge wake right me trying to bounce me off the rocks, I flipped him off called him a few choice words and from then on out I lost all respect for these tourney guys. I have a buddy that is new to boat fishing, he will drive a 1/4 mile out of his way to stay away from another fisherman, we were setup on a point, spot locked, verticle jigging walleye, here comes the local bass club, I told my buddy to watch how considerate these guys are, the entire club flew by us within couple hundred feet at 50 mph, we're on a huge lake, they could have easily avoided us, just flat out rude guys.....
Todd, this topic has been the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about because it involves kids, but I"m glad you posted this video because the topic needs attention. I had a similar run in with some high school anglers and their father on Lake O' The Pines. I was fishing a rocky point with a crankbait and catching bass on a particular sweet spot about every other cast. I see them coming down the bank towards me flipping the bushes. I'm thinking that they will go around me on the point and keep fishing down the bank...nope, they pick up crankbaits and start casting the the same exact sweet spot where I was catching the fish. I was in a tournament, and felt like I had a good chance to do well. I debated saying anything because of the kids, but after about 10 casts, I had to say something. I've had run ins over the years, but this is the only time in my life I've had to speak up. If these Dad's and boat captains don't teach these kids fishing etiquette, the rest of us will have to. Some of these parents want to kids to will at all costs and will throw etiquette out the door.
Things like this need to be reported to the tournament officials. These adult anglers need to never be allowed to “teach” kids to fish or be boat captains ever again.
Its just like traveling down the highway........ We all need to co-exist and do the right thing...... It just takes one jackwagon to ruin it for all of those great people out there trying to do the right thing...... Glad you showed this on video....... Had it happen to me a lot......but I dont tournamnet fish anymore.... and normally just go somewhere else...... It still pi$$es me off.......... You handled like the pro that you are...... Thanks for sharing brother....!!!!
Brutal man. I was fishing with a guide once who cut guys off similar to that, and he had the same bs “they were on the other side of the point” argument as well. Wildly uncomfortable, I still regret not saying anything to him. The high school tournaments in general is a good topic as well. IMO, kids are far better off playing a real sport and preparing for a career rather than trying to “go pro”. If they are die hard, they can fish club tournaments and learn something from old timers and not just Dad.
Love your channel and enjoy the content . A lot going on here to talk about . First too many boats too little water . The authorities who issue permit , don't know how it works , have got to limit amount of tournament activity to appropriate levels . Secondly we have to agree to disagree occasionally but with respect , no name calling please . You spoke your concern , never cursed or called anyone a name , you treated the situation with respect . He on the other hand reminded me of todays politics where no one can disagree respectively . The more we talk about ethics on the water the sooner we come to better understandings . We owe this to the next generation of young fisherman . Best of luck and may God Bless you .
We have to stop keeping our mouths shut and I’m glad you let him know about it! The kids will remember what you said and anyone with a camera needs to start blasting them on TH-cam. Just sitting back and letting it happen will never change it. Gotta teach them young.
I have a channel as well so I'm ALWAYS recording. I have 3 incidents recorded and saved of the same scenario. 2 of them High School tournament boats. I told one of the guys he needs to be teaching those kids the right way instead of the wrong way. He said I AM teaching them how to fish. I said that's the problem if he didn't know what I was referring to. The kids in the boats body language always shows that they do get it, it's the ADULTS who aren't teaching it. The 1st thing the adult usually tries to do is place it back on us, EVERY TIME. Great video.
Here's what I see happened . . . You rolled into that area where 4-5 boats were already set up. You came in on plane (that may be totally normal in those tournaments I'm not sure) . . . then you circled 360 around and pulled out of the heart of the area. So kind of a buzzkill for the guys fishing the area. I guarantee (right or wrong) some of those dude's didn't dig that. Again . . . might be totally normal. IMO you did the right thing by pulling back into that secondary area. Then after the boats left and you came around the corner, that guy with the kids probably felt since he was there before you (even though he was across on the other side) that he had the 'right' to that spot even though he was cutting you off because he had been there longer. No excuse for the guy throwing profanity out of the gate, . . . bad deal. The only thing I saw that "I" personally wouldn't have done, was come in sort of 'Hot', when you first arrived, but that's just me.
Dude you are a class act.Ive been watching you since Texas Team Trail. What you done for those kids was great and is a lesson in bed fishing most would pay for.Just had to comment to let you know. Great job
I'm a high school captain. I have had this happen in GA on lanier and Hartwell with several other high school teams and other fishermen. The way I see it is everyone out there should be friends. We never know when we might have a motor issue or an accident or anything? Why not teach fishermen educate. The problem with some of the parents/captains is they care about only one thing. Their own kid and how well he does. The problem is they are not looking at their kids future. One day, Daddy won't be on the boat. These kids do as daddy/captain do. Proud of how you handled it. Not sure I would have been so nice but I am glad you were.
I love how you handled the situation. I'm 50 yrs old and have been fishing since I was 4. My dad and I fish tournaments almost every weekend, and run into this a lot! I have lost my cool a few times, and have almost ended up in a fight. All it did by getting so mad was ruin my day, and my dad's also! ( Even though he was more pissed then I was), it still was ridiculous for me to ruin our day over someone who probably didn't even have a clue he was in the wrong. I believe one of the first lessons dad taught me when I started tournament fishing, or fun fishing, was to not cut people off!!! I have lived by that and will continue too respect others on the water! Thanks for sharing this video, and hopefully the younger generation will learn from this, and some of the high-school dad's! We run into it so much on Chickamauga Lake. So many high-school tournaments, and etiquette is out the window there! Thanks! Love the videos!
The best example would have been to simply go around them, ask if they've caught them all, wave and tell them goodluck. It's a form of verbal judo and it turns potentially bad interactions into positive ones. I've had folks roll right up to my spot even while anchored. I just wave and invite them to cast along with me. It avoids stress, I meet some great people on the water and I enjoy fishing much more than I would if I let it upset me.
True but it’s not a spot it’s the bank, it’s literally one sight fish in a foot of water. I’m not rolling up on someone and throw on a single fish with someone that’s absurd. Second that’s fine if people cut in front of people and there are plenty of people who will just go around. Doesn’t make it right. We are both in a tournament both have money on the line. It’s a competition we also have rules in that competition it’s not just a bunch of weekend anglers being on the water, we signed up for this. If I cut in front of you at Walmart shouldn’t you just let me in because hey you’ll be ok. It’s only time I’m waist of of yours and everyone behind you. Don’t say anything to me just let me do it because a confrontation is bad. There is a reason people stand up for themselves it’s because over time these things happen and people get tired of it.
Thank you for addressing this issue directly and respectfully. This is become the norm on lakes with multiple tournaments. It’s shameful and disrespectful and has no place in fishing. I commend you for pointing this out and putting it out so hopefully somebody learns a lesson.
Dude, this happens to me regularly from old guys trolling. Or they just troll right through where I’m casting, within 20/30 ft of me like I don’t exist. It’s mind boggling
I'm a bank fisherman not even realizing all the boar etiquettes but even I was like come man, and then the insults just proves that you were correct and I personally felt you handled it very well....new to channel already see you keep it reel haha
Way to go Todd! You handled this incident like a pro! It’s a shame that “Daddy ball” exist even on the water not only on the ball fields and courts… I always told my boys if your doing something that doesn’t feel right in your stomach then it’s probably not right. These kids obviously had that “gut” feeling but Dad ignored it due to his selfish ways to want a better result for his kids finish rather then take that opportunity to use that as a teaching moment of on the water etiquette and show them how it should be done! The choice of words in front of those kids even caught me off guard, he should be banned from being involved in any such ways with school kids and events in my opinion. I was involved with starting our high school fishing club years ago in our highland lakes community and I can assure you we would have not tolerated this kind of behavior! I fish a lot of local tourney’s in my area and also guide fish so unfortunately I have also experienced a lot of on the water bad behavior, I think you are a great ambassador for the sport and enjoy your vid’s you put out. Keep up the outstanding work you do and good luck with the rest of your season.
Todd, I really appreciate your on the water standards. And yes it is right for us older/experienced guys with on the water manners to push the right way to do things. Seems like bashing my head against a red oak sometimes though. It is always a teachable moment! whether the student is teachable or not. Tight lines!
There are two guys in this business that I truly respect as pure gentlemen on the water. You Mr. Todd and Mr. Greg Bohannan. All could learn from you both. Thank you for posting this.
Really did you watch the full video, thats like saying your driving in a straight line and a guy comes out of nowhere cuts in front of you and says I was hear first. Watch the video again the whole way through.
Pretty evident all that guy was worried about was protecting that spot… If he would’ve “stayed there” then this isn’t ever even an issue but, the fact that you circle the right bank and even a cut across a little cove and then recognize the guy is on the move means it’s go time. As soon as he realizes you’re coming around for this extremely small cut, he noses straight back in completely cutting you off. There’s no way around the fact that this guy was wrong and his poor kids knew it. Now, he’s just a TH-cam famous A$$ and I’m glad you posted this. These folks need to understand “you never know who’s got a camera” and this will hopefully help in the future. Thanks brother sorry this happened it sucks I know!
You done what a real man would do. I'm a fan for life. Not only did u not disrespect him as he did u, u thanked the kids. Them kids won't never forget the way u handled yourself.
OK, I'm the high school boat caption for two high school girls. This is how it would have went down in our boat. We would have floated to the middle of the pocket, the tunes would be turned on, the sun tanning lotion would have been found, we would spend the next two hours laying out. Then, we would have went on a high speed cool down ride. Todd, you handled the situation correctly, and most importantly you taught those kids how to handle yourself without being derogatory towards another angler. Good job.
Great job at keeping your composure, I had the same thing happened to me a few years back and I told that idiot off and my partner had to stop me from jumping in that guy's boat, I was red hot... Again , you did the right thing and "Yes" he was in the wrong. Thanks for sharing this video. Tight lines
Great video! Hopefully this helps someone learn the proper way to interact on the water. Had a similar situation happen at a state level event with the adult and high school event going on on the same body of water on the same day. Fishing a grass bed we were about 20 yards from a point on it and watched the high school boat captain set down and idle about 100 yards right at us and stopped the kids right at the point of the grass bed. There was at least half a mile of open, visible water this guy ran through straight at us before he set down too so he knew we were there before he even came back there. High school fishing is great, but they need to be taught correctly otherwise we're doing the sport more harm than good. Glad you were rewarded by catching the fish!
Never fails! I was fishing along a bank with another boat sitting in a pocket, anchored, crappie fishing off the bow (in the pocket). I stopped casting when I was approx. 100' from his boat, I go out at least 75' behind his boat in the middle of the cove to go around, then got 100' past him before I started casting again. That dude came unglued with his small kid on the boat! He pulled anchor and came near my boat, then told me he was coming over on my boat to kick my a**. I welcomed his arrival by telling him he was about to make a life altering decision, he changed his mind and shut his mouth. I always try to be courteous to others on the water, some people just don't want to play nice with others!
Agree 100%. Not sure what you mean by the older guys... I'm an "older guy" and you'll never see me cut off or crowd someone on the water. I go out of my way by the day of the week I fish and where I fish to avoid the crowds. I generally fish other areas and less common water to avoid everyone! I have also had so called "Tournament Anglers" who fell they are entitled to fish where I'm already at because they are more invested in it because they are fishing for money. We all can do better...
Well said. Doesn't matter whether you're in a tournament or not. A tournament fisherman has no more "rights" than the guy who is trying to enjoy a day off or time with his family or kids. It's like driving on a three lane highway ... you stay in your lane, and you only enter the other lane when it's clear. You just don't cut off another driver. Simple as that. Courtesy, fishing etiquette, simple respect ... call it what you want.
You were right Todd !! Those kids will not ever do this when they're on their own. Valuable lesson and the kids learned today! The guy will never get it !!!!
Thx for sharing this Todd, it’s good for people to see this kind of stuff an how things should an shouldn’t work, with so many young an new people on the water this is good to show.
Totally agree with you!!! I bank fish, sadly i dont have a boat. I will be working an area and people will just come right up next to me and there goes my fishing area. Would be very different if i wasnt using lures but it is very friggen rude when someone takes your space
Tommy Kirk our sport has got to the point where this is happening way to often where fisherman cut you off going down the bank then if you try to go around now I have in there eyes done something wrong Todd you are dead on I have always stood my ground and not get into confrontation with them on the water with the future of are sport I believe we keep teaching and showing what etiquette on the water Thankyou for everything you do
This is the second video I have watched of yours! I like your style, brother! I'm an outfitter in Northwest Montana, hardcore to say the least! I'm impressed dude!
Imo, Social media has ruined these kids nowadays. I am a father of 5 wonderful children. From 38 to 13yrs old. It's sooo crazy how different my younger kids are from my older kids. These young kids nowadays have zero sense of responsibility or consequences!! Not specifically this certain situation but in life as a whole. It's probably our fault in retrospect. Because I didn't have alot growing up, I wanted my kids to have everything I didn't have. Along with coddling them most their childhood, didn't help I'm sure. 🤔😒. But these kids are out of control today. I see them cussing at their parents 👀 😳 and I wanna put them across my knee and lighting them up !! Keep up the Gr8 content brother 👏 👌 New Subscriber!!
Anyone who bass fishes knows you don’t get in front of someone going down a bank. It’s happened to me countless times. Whenever I see someone in a spot I want to fish I fish another allot close by until they’re out of the way. The dad obviously doesn’t have a clue.
To many times it happened to me. Funny how I never did it but somehow someone always does. But more positive experiences help me get over it. I'm never a jerk. Infact last trip I was out in my local hole I noticed a guy on the dock. Warned him the warden gets in around the time I showed up. Said in not busting your chops but I don't wanna see you get a fine. He told me they closed the landing to fish due to beach overload. To many swimmers trashing the area and he couldn't fish anywhere else. Warden showed up stops the guy unfortunately. So I walked up said oh he's with me. I actually took the guy out too. Guy tried paying me. Told him I made a friend that's all I needed. Funny how being on a lake can be good and bad.
Nice conversation and teaching the boaters. And young men who were considerate. One person can leave a sour taste but the nice people and conversations almost always outnumber them. Keep doing/trying to do the right thing regardless in life.
As most others have said this is a common thing these days. With the ever increasing numbers of tournament anglers, trails, & clubs it is inevitable. I've had it happen to me countless times and once even by a well known pro many years ago while he was "Practicing" and I fishing a club tournament. Yes, we had words and his argument was I was doing it for fun, he did it for a living. I'll be honest and say I didn't handle myself very well simply because of his attitude and remarks. He is still fishing a pro circuit to this day and recognizes me everytime we run into each other (He also avoids me). How you handle yourself when it does happen is what is most important. Unless you're fishing on one of the great lakes, Toledo Bend, Sam Rayburn a lake can only hold so many anglers, so "OverCrowding" is the main issue. My home lake is just under 7K acres and on any given weekend in the spring it becomes very crowded and hard to find a spot that hasn't been fished by 10+ boats an hour. Clubs come from all over the state of Texas to fish here without knowing there is a 75 boat tournament, 3 other clubs, 50 guys pre-fishing for a tourney not to mention all the weekend "Meat" fisherman and pleasure boaters!! There currently isn't a way available to tournament directors to prevent "overbooking" a tournament lake. Someone should build a website that allows clubs, trails, etc to enter and/or check a lake before scheduling it for a tournament to reduce overcrowding a lake. I know this will not prevent bad behavior from everyone but it will reduce frustration and anxieties people have trying to enjoy a day on the water caused by overcrowding!!
It happened to me few years ago on kentucky lake during bfl by high school team, too. The coach drove his boat within 10 yards.. His kid was reluctant to put down the trolling motor and cast, but his coach told him get up and cast. I didn't say anything... I just left.... I wish I had... Todd you handled the right way...
Hey Mr C granted I don't have a boat yet but I've learned alot from you about how to be a good person to people on the water. Great job Mr C you have to be the nicest person I've ever seen bass fishing. Thanks for the great lessons on how to treat people on the water. Your awesome. Hey Todd I get angry because people right away start swearing and cursing at you over fishing it's ridiculous I mean Todd they act like you're trying to steal their wife away from them. Your a great guy Todd and an absolute gentleman on the water 💦 and I see your like that off the water. God bless you and your family and your girlfriend or wife your pal fisherman Mike.
Hey Todd can I go fishing with you I know you're a busy guy but I'm just letting I would love to be in a boat with you. Good luck this year in your tournament s this year.
Todd, couldn’t agree more. Question for you. Given the same scenario what would you have considered an appropriate distance to stay away from you if they wanted to fish that same bank?
Amazing how you kept your cool and composure after what that guy called you! He was in the wrong for sure, not hard to use common courtesy when on the water and talk to the other boater and work it out just like you showed in the video. Nice job!
I've been cut off so many times I can't count. I'm a kayak guy, I use a pedal drive so I cruses fairly quickly but I don't cover water as fast a bass boat. Was a lake by my old house before I moved, guy had yak with trolling motor & he would cut me off alot. I just ignored it but we both knew it. I would wait & still come in behind him & catch fish. He would then try to aproch me asking what I caught the fish on!? He was type guy that see u catch fish in an area then try come fish on top of you. Some guys don't know how fish their own fish & alot people don't have respect for everyone else to give them space or cut people off. I treat everyone how I want to be treated. Keep distance & respect everyone's space!
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 I know there are local cookie jar afternoon tournaments were platforms are allowed. Makes sight fishing easier providing you don't fall overboard, lol.
It looks like he was sitting out waiting for the other boat to leave and soon as they did he motored in. Then here comes you.... You started fishing the opposite way. They waited.
That other boat was 200 yards down the bank he had 20 minutes to get there before we did not sure why he did it 25 yards in front of us. Besides high school teams got to start 30 minutes before we were allowed to take off. Plus I was boat 167 basically last boat and I went fished other spots before. They had all the time to go, didn’t he say he was in that area all morning. Why cut me off. Like I said it’s weird to me all the people that have given excuses to someone that cut someone off, called someone what he did, and got DQd for using a platform. Funny how that works.
On-the-water Confrontations take so much Energy. I always try, try, try to say nothing but I do take a photo of the boat. The photo helps as I want others that I know to see if they know who or have seen this boat in the past. The more I say, the more distracted and worn out I get. It has killed a whole enjoyable day on the water more than once. Also, saying less is important because I don’t want my truck or trailer messed with. Especially when I am in a remote area and it will be days or weeks before I get back to the boat ramp. When crossing another boat, I’ll ask if they want me to pass offshore or inshore. Passing other boats is interesting as I can see how others are fishing the area. When I have had confrontations and the owner lies, I have said something like “You know, if your Captain is lying, he just showed you he is a liar and thus a cheater and can not be trusted”. “Y’all take care now”. Then get out of there so you can re-focus, get your blood pressure and adrenaline down and go fishing.
I was a boat captain for a team this year and I’m kinda glad we didn’t go to regionals at Texoma that weekend. We missed one tournament because of basketball so we didn’t get enough points. Our last tournament of the year on Brownwood I had the boys fishing 6XD’s down the bank towards a point. As we neared the point a captain ran across the opening in a red aluminum boat and pulled up to the point right in front of us. We were clearly working to the point. He had his boys drop the trolling motor and hit the point and go inside the pocket. As he rounded the point to go inside one of my boys caught an 8 pounder. I told my team that cutting someone off on the lake is very disrespectful and I’m sure they learned from it. Every time I’m on the lake I try to see which direction someone appears to be going and work in behind them. I decided I’m done with the high school tournament stuff. I took off too much time from work and the other sports will screw you. I spent hundreds in fuel driving to lakes to scout and prefish only to have football and basketball schedules change at the last minute and cause issues. These days you can’t get on a lake on the weekend without some kind of tournament going.
Its respect i fish a lake by my house and no motors are allowed its just trolling motors everytime I go i troll down one side and get to the end pocket fish it then move down the next side i always have to two young kids in a John boat drive by me and go in the pocket and sit there fishing and making noise,so I'll just cross over and keep fishing.last week I blocked the exit of pocket put on spot lock caught 6 fish then pulled off they never caught a fish the whole time loved it .great video love the channel 👍
There ain't no "cutting off" in fishing. Just go 30 yards past them and leave them in the dust... Or you know you can be a baby because "THAT'S WHERE I WAS HEADING THOUGH" and keep approaching them looking for a problem.
I love this video good on you for making it I’ve cut one guy off in my whole life of fishing and that’s because he blew by at about 70 mile an hour 10 feet away from me and a 70-year-old man on deck trying to fish. And I still felt guilty doing it! So I’m glad you did this video!
Where I fish, there are a lot of casual boaters who will fish out of bowriders, pontoons, etc. Not serious fishermen by any stretch. They can get really aggravating as they will see you fishing and pull up right next to you to fish. There could be nobody around you for a mile and they will just assume that because there's someone fishing there, that must be the best spot. Usually they'll go away since they have no idea what they're doing (I'll be on a small grass patch and they'll be fishing the sand.). Worst is when they pull up on a good grass patch and throw their anchor in it.....
Glad someone is sharing this stuff. It happens so much anymore and it’s just lack of communication or just arrogance. I know from my past experiences with high school tournaments they think they have priority over everyone. Also I have had their coach’s tell me this on the water.
Hello Todd. I just started watching and subscribing to your channel. I was looking up fishing with jigs. Each season, I pick a lure or technique and try to hone my skills on that particular item. Your video on jigs was by far the simplest and most concise. Enough information without too much saturation on the subject. Anyway, I'm becoming a huge fan. 😉 Now ....onto the subject of your video ... but ... before I do, I have to speak up for all of us fishermen here in the Northeast. I'm a bit disappointed that for some reason, unknown to me, you may have experienced a bad apple from the Northeast that may have left you jaded. Granted, people in general in the Northeast tend to be a bit more rude than folk in the South. Those are just the facts. It's unfortunate that somebody or something left you with this viewpoint. I can assure you ... we're not all jerks. Soooo ... your video. On a whole and in our society today, people are just flat out rude and disrespectful no matter where you go. It's the "all about me" attitude these days. To your comment about "owning the water" ... I've been fed this line 100 times. Goes back to showing and giving respect towards others while fishing and in life in general. To the point of "dropping in" on another boat or bank fisherman ... goes back to respect and etiquette. I've been on both ends of it. Whether it's fishing a cove, a brush pile, or a stand of timber, a fisherman has to have "space awareness" about the surrounding circumstances. Most of the time, I'm on a boat, whether it's on a resovoir or the ocean. If there is a guy on the bank fishing, I'll give them a ton of room. I'm the one who has more options to move around. Bank fishermen are limited sometimes with just small opening or short stretches of "beach." If I'm around a ton of boats, I'll go around them and give them the spot. "Dropping in" is taboo ... ESPECIALLY here in the Northeast. That's why I'd rather do what you did and just "move in." It's just not worth it. I've tried to instill this into my son as well. It's not that hard to do. Just move on. Most of the time, if you take the high road, you will, in fact, be rewarded as you say. I also have the mindset that you never know what "that other guy" is gonna do given a tense situation. You never know what the other person may be going through, either. Maybe the guy that called you a "dick" had just lost his job or he had an argument with his son. Or ... maybe he really didn't give one crap about you and fishing etiquette. Props to you for handling it like a professional. What you experienced is NOTHING compared to some of the close encounters I've had. I've had fisherman threaten me ... yes ... threaten me over similar situations. I was fishing a bank in my boat like you were, maybe 20 away and had two kayaks cut right across my line. They were trolling Rapalas along the shore line. My line actually got caught in his paddle. When I started reeling in line, he yanked the paddle and broke my line. I just put my arms like "dude" ... wth ??? His comment ... (as he smirked) "Oops, didn't see your line, dude." Really?!?! I'm casting at the bank, and you see me working a stretch... yet you split the gap between me and the shore?!?! It was I could do to hold my tongue as I watched my spinnerbait sink into the abyss. When I tried to discuss it with the guy calmly, he started with the insults and then proceeded to approach my boat while swinging his paddle at me. I was so disgusted by the situation, and being the end of the day, I decided to call it quits for the day. As I approached the ramp, a park Ranger walked down the dock and asked me for my information. When asked what for, he said that he was going to issue a ticket and fine to the guy in the kayak. You see, he was watching the whole thing unfold while looking for life jackets through his binoculars. He heard the commotion and decided to hang back and see how it played out. Turns out the guy was banned from the resovoir after this incident. I never filed any complaint. The park Ranger just needed my information, boat ID, etc. for his report. I'll just end with this ... while I did not catch any fish, I was rewarded by not freaking out in front of my son, two I was rewarded by knowing that the park Ranger had my back. I was rewarded knowing that I will never see this guy in the kayak at this particular resovoir ever again. Tightlines Todd. You were a class act in this situation. You went above and beyond. 😉
I fish out of a kayak so when I unintentionally do something to piss somebody off they just respond by throwing 3-foot rollers at me trying to flip me out of my boat and kill me. It's just fishing man. It's amazing how possessive people get over public water. Fishing etiquette 101
It’s disappointing that some of these “adults” are the ones setting examples for kids. You did a great job of remembering that you have a chance to be the “good” and “proper” example to them.
You handled that great. Other guy definitely not teaching those kids right. I boat captained for my grandson 4 yrs in high school. Lot of local tournaments. 4 Arkansas state tournaments. 3 world finals and national championship tournaments. Huge fields in some. Almost 400 boats. We managed to never have a problem. He was taught his whole life how to act and co exist on the water with other boats. He’s in 2nd year of fishing in college now. I’ve heard several stories similar to yours though. Like you said it’s the adults in the boat. Good luck to you and thanks for posting. I just subscribed I’ll check some of your videos out.
You are in my opinion 100% correct. Now had the guy came in and said”hey we got a bed fish in there we’ve been working on, is it ok if we go ahead of you?” It would of been totally different. But he didn’t. I’m glad to see it’s just not a California thing.
People cut me off two or three times a trip these days. Last three years it seems a whole lot worse then it used to be. alot of people have lost their manners. I should add that there are still more people out there that do it right then don't. Great video!
I’m trying to figure this out as a bank angler on a lake that’s wide open. If I ever get a boat, I guess I’ll have to figure out a different set of etiquette. With steep hillsides and having to pack up my stuff to move it, I lack a boat’s mobility. So I think in terms of staking out a bit of shoreline. Also, I’m used to fishing for skittish trout. You’re thinking in terms of staking out a path. If someone comes within 15’ and casts within 10’, I’m upset, especially when they have mobility to go around and there’s hundreds of yards open on either side of me. Maybe that guy needs information on bassin’ etiquette just like I do.
I posted a reply addressing this very issue. I'm mostly in a boat, and if I saw you on the bank. I would probably give you about 100 feet. I would be steering 90 degrees away from you and giving you all the room in the world. You're restricted... I have more options to move. Spent many hours bank fishing as a kid and knew what it was like to have a boat park right on top of my line 20-30 feet out. That used to tick me off something fierce.
already was a fan of you now I am even more of a fan, you did it right, and left him pondering the rest of his life this situation. He played Checkers you played Chess, Checkmate.....
This is pretty common place on my local. waters. Usually Ill just pick up and move on. At other times Ill try and hold my ground, usually fishing offshore. I do a lot of off shore fishing to avoid the crowds. This father is a bad bad example for those kids. Keep doing you and itll all be good.
I’ve some horrible cut offs. I was cut off twice by the same kayaker fishing docs. Another time a boat was fishing a bank going in the wind. So we idle until about 70 yards behind him facing the other way. This guy sees us coming in and turns his boat and trolls full power with the wind and just cuts us off and says he was fishing down this way already.
You handled that great and I would like to think the boys will pass this lesson on to all their buddies. High school coaches and parents really need to think about how much the affect the kids
That guy is a duchepool no doubt! That being said, there's a whole lake there. Go around and fish on. Stoping was provoking, and just helped him act the fool. Easy with the up north lol. 👍✌️
Fishing a tournament on Chick, we also had 175 HS boats on the lake. Most of them were fine. Had a guy idle between me and the point I was fishing (20 yards off shore) with 3/4 of a mile of lake behind me. He did this while I was waving at him and begging him not to idle over my fish. He passed 5 yards in front me. His kids looked super uncomfortable too.
A.He idled in front of you
B. The dude (douche) had a freakin' step ladder
C. Some people don't know they're stupid unless you tell them
Even if you do tell am they can't comprehend that. It's not even worth talking to these people. In my experience nothing good comes of it.
He idled in front of him but neither could see each other around that small point. Then Todd boats up to him and "leans" on him. I can see why he got defensive, which is still childish. Childish on both parts
Being stupid is like being dead… Only everyone else notices.
I've been there !!! The "all about me attitude.'
Ehh I'd say 1 outta 10 😆
@BehindTheReelFishing So true. There will always be "that guy" on the water.
Looked to me like the high school boat was there and you pulled right in on where he was fishing or gonna fish.
yup. that boat was not moving when we first saw it.
Yup. Bunch of little pricks, that's why I have a bulldawg pounder with no hooks to launch at them
struggle with this. used to fish VERY low level (club) tournaments. thought I wanted to be a competive angler. learned enough about the sport and myself to figure out: not me. not for me. it's tough out there. lots of folks. every day, all day. many of us 'just' recreational anglers looking to clear heads, 'get away' for possibly the one day we have on the water. so this morning, I headed over to a nearby lake (having decided to not fight the crowds on chickamauga)... to show up and of course, 'big high school tournament ' going on. just a local high school 'putting it on'. not part of the state 'schedule'. 81 boats. no ramp access. after my very long week of work, it was a bit disappointing. but, what you gonna do? several things that a lot of non-competitive folks struggle with: 1. ramp access/no room for anyone else. 2. freakin' blast-off. all those boats churning up the lake to 'get to their spots'. and finally 3: about mid-morning, the lake gets spun up once again as anglers are running/gunning 'looking for 5' or looking for that kicker... spots on lakes that do 'best' with quiet just continually get pounded with wakes and small spots are exposed again and again to teams/boats 'running in' or 'blasting out' ... and on top of all this? if you want to fish a spot, that 'sweet spot' or 'the juice'? you better hit it first... and don't expect to ease up on it. if you leave 'too much room' seems everyone figures they can just cut in, cut you off... cause you weren't on 'the spot'... lots of room for folks to get frustrated out there, whether recreational or competitive. seems to me that the place this starts is tournament directors and organizers: if they're only focused on 'their tournament' and not taking into account all those folks who also are trying to use that public water. i understand the dream. had it once myself. but also have seen so much poor behavior out there that I work really hard to stay as far away from folks as possible. very difficult to do.
That guy was already there, point blank
Dude is a f .ing joke just move on nothing professional
You handled that very professionally. That's how you give our sport a great name. Teaching our youth is our job. Even during the tournament you stopped and helped and taught those young men. Be proud of what you did. I love your content. I told my grandson that I'm gonna make him watch this video he was all about it. Awesome job sir. Keep it up.
Blatant cut off. High School fishing needs an on-the-water ethics class for the anglers, coaches and boat drivers. Should be a requirement. Hopefully this would lead to more courtesy in the future. Not this guy, but I think some people are clueless.
Well said!
This guy wasn’t clueless . He didn’t care . That’s why he had an attitude.
@@timg185 yes. Agreed.
I always cast near their boat hoping to catch one and piss them off. Sometimes it works!
I usually just move.. not worth the energy.. if they think it’s normal or okay then nothing I’m gonna say is going to change it
I'm a kayak angler here in Ohio and I agree with you! It's crazy
Thanks!
👍👍
This type of behavior really started getting bad 7-8 years ago. In hunting as well. I'd bet that guy wasn't a native.
I like the way you talked to them youngsters and helped them out. Fishing needs more guys like you!
Thanks you
in my experience boat fishing for the last 21 years, when I show up and see a bass club, or tournament going on I know these bass boats will be the rudest inconsiderate guys on the water, its like they think, their tourny is the only thing that matters, they will almost bump you out of your spot.
Absolutely right. Tournament guys think their tournament somehow supersedes others who were there first. It doesn’t.
Summed it right there.
Too many tournaments. They ruin the fishery where I live.
this take is deaaaaad wrong
@@weinbea Go ahead and explain . . .
I’m a new boater on the waters with 3 kids in toll definitely educating thank you sir! I learned something today
Respect on the water goes a long way towards everyone enjoying a good fishing day. One bad experience kills the mood. Good video.
How cool would it be to run into Todd on the water, only to have him take the time to teach something. You're a class act Todd!!
Dude looked to me you entered their space
Good job.
😂😂😂 love it
Your interactions with them make me glad Im part of that fishing community, one of the good guys!
Great job handling that!! That stuff gets under my skin too man!!! You’ve got my respect.
Totally agree with you!!! I bank fish, sadly i dont have a boat. I will be working an area and people will just come right up next to me and there goes my fishing area. Would be very different if i wasnt using lures but it is very friggen rude when someone takes your space
Tommy Kirk our sport has got to the point where this is happening way to often where fisherman cut you off going down the bank then if you try to go around now I have in there eyes done something wrong Todd you are dead on I have always stood my ground and not get into confrontation with them on the water with the future of are sport
I believe we keep teaching and showing what etiquette on the water
Thankyou for everything you do
This is the second video I have watched of yours!
It happens all the time - no respect/morals period!!!! Nothing pisses me off more and my hat off to you sir for handling it the right way.
Anyone know of a circuit that allows a platform ( step ladder) during a tournament? I'm guessing this was not a BASS sanctioned event.
No they ended up getting DQd from the event because of it
@@toddcastledinefishing5924 I know there are local cookie jar afternoon tournaments were platforms are allowed.
Thought you handled this situation very professionally! Well done. much respect 🙏 👏
The telltale sign they KNOW they're doing wrong is when they won't look at you. This rule not exclusive to fishing.
I don’t think they need to cancel or anything like that but like you said kids need to be shown right ways to act on the water.
Now ....onto the subject of your video ... but ... before I do, I have to speak up for all of us fishermen here in the Northeast.
I respect yaks more than other bass boats don't wanna flip anybody over man I know what's its like fishing from a smaller boat

Your a good dude Todd, people like you are appreciated!
Very well handled, I’ve had to do that a few times, I can’t let them f up my day. Good job.
People that do stuff like that are like talking to a wall. Just move on. 😂
Happens every time I go to the water it seems like. You handled that well.
