L1: The "normal" characters. All the General units and standard Fes units (which eventually become Generals) are here. Home to all of the weakest characters in the game, but some are pretty powerful and versatile. You'll invariably get far more of these than any other no matter what kind of prayers you do. S2/5: A Victorian-esque alternate reality based in Subterranean Animsim. All Ultras. Z/R/Y: Various one-off "indie" Ultras. L80: Relic characters, the next step up from Ultra, with a corresponding increase in upgrade and Limit Break difficulty. Based on the music videos. Of all the universes, these take the longest to come out (both Japan and Global). C3/F1: The dreaded Epics. They have the steepest requirements in the game and sometimes aren't even sparkable. As of right now, C3 is a beach paradise and F1 is everywhere else.
IIRC the L80 universe is one in which the lost word incident has completely destroyed it. They have been recovered by various means that can be explored in the Ruins of Memory. There is a very unexplored Y universe with only one character, Tewi released so far. See bits of the lore once in a while, hope it gets explored more going forward. Seems like we saw most of the Z and R universes, and currently going through C with some side universes converging.
I'm usually the type of person who doesn't care about character variations in gacha games and stuff, but the character variations in Touhou LW were written well enough to the point that I actually feel intrigued to learn about the universes and what each characters from said universes experienced there. Kudos to the writers who came up with these different scenarios for each characters, they did good with this game
