I love the Lightning patented “turd” spot they all have on the handle. On the side facing you when you’re opening it right handed there’s a spot by where the blade comes out that’s a defect in the texture they’ve had since the beginning of time they’ve never corrected. It’s like one huge “spot” defect in the mold.

Wonder if there has ever been a person that got stabbed with an OTF knife cared if the blade had some play in it?

I know right. Whevever I see these comparison videos I'm like..... oh ok so you paid an extra $140 for no twang sound and slightly less blade play.

@@Neo_The_One_plus a quarter the weight, much better edge retention, smaller in the pocket, more comfortable in the hand, aesthetically nicer. Not saying I'd pay 180 for that

Yeah, I doubt getting stabbed in the throat with a $180 knife feels a damn bit better than with a $30 one.

Thanks for the vid! I’ve carried my Lightening a lot. I’ve had to blow it out and oil it once in a while, but it always comes back and for $40 you can’t go wrong. I’m with you... I’m kind of afraid to use my microtech otf because it’s so expensive and the last time I had to send one back to them it took forever.

I have both of these as well as a benchmade infidel..they are both really good knives but the otf lighting is great for a beater otf that has been very reliable for me..the mungo's of course holds a edge longer and does feel better but the deployment is still stiff on mine..the lighting has good value for the price..

I would not pay $180 for that knife, even though I think it's VERY nice. I'm very satisfied with my Lightning.

I have a couple of the cheaper OTFs from grindworks for use in my truck. Perfect when using trucker gloves. They get abused badly, but have not let me down yet. I also have several Kershaw Launch models(1 and 4)and a Boker Burnley for use inside the truck and to carry. Tho a little more expensive, they are defiantly better quality...But that makes it less likely you will abuse them like I do the cheap OTFs.

I can definitely understand wanting the smaller, tighter version for the pocket, but that Lightning would be welcome in any of my toolboxes. Either way, I'm in CA, so... yeah...

Can these OTF knives be oiled? I would like to shoot a little spray lube inside mine just to keep it clean and freed up. Will that hurt it at all?

I bought a $15.00 OTF off Amazon to satisfy my "fidget flicker" obsession, and would never depend on it for EDC or survival. (It hasn't fallen off track in ~1000 openings...) For carry in the real world, I would recommend most any decent quality automatic side opener or fixed blade. I have a $35.00 Boker Kalashnikov. It works just fine, and if it breaks or I lose it, big deal....> $100.00 knives are sweet, but more for collecting, unless your life depends on it. If I have $1000.00 to spend on something cool, I'm gonna buy a handgun. I have a "fidget trigger" obsession, too...

I found the thumb slide on my lightning to be a little on the stiff side, it never did get softer, and i finally actualy tore my thumb tendon flicking it...i then was so pissed off i destroyed same with a ball peen hammer.....

I'd choose the Lightning. A barely noticeable twang doesnt bother as long as the action is solid. To pay that much for the mungos i'd want a min 3.5 inch blade tho

I understand the fancy knife but to me the lighting is decent quality for a good price. I don’t need to drop 180 without tax just for a nicer knife. I would rather use the 40 dollar one (which at the moment is 30 in the store) carefree rather than being careful with the mungo.

I have a couple of lightenings and they are cool play knifes but that is about it. Try to do anything serious and they jump off track. You can fix them easy, I have actually opened up mine so I could see how it worked and why it acts the way it does. I would emensely love to buy a quality, brand name great steel $200+ dollar OTF knife but if it does not have the ruggedness I need then I am stuck with a $200+ playknife. Maybe I need a side opener to achieve that, don't know

The boker kalashnikovs are very good and sturdy budget side openers. I own it and a lightning. But I find myself carrying the lightning way more often. I have beat the shit out of it and it still works. If I were rich I'd buy a microtech though. Lol

  • @nrich5127

The quality of the steel of the blade is where the price difference occurs.

  • @1953SM

I do like the fit and finish and blade shape of the expensive model but the price is definitely a turn off and a definite no, and it's small . I have bought $200. and $300. knives before but those were all fixed blades like the CRKT Columbia River - James Williams Hisshou and other similar ones that I've added to my collection of hundreds.

Personally, I LOVE my Titan OTF dagger serrated. Super sharp. Great for anything and the serrated blade makes it extremely versatile for working or self-defense. I LOVE the grippiness on the handle. THAT'S the kicker for me. NO slippage ever!

The snobby side of me says high end every time. Mainly because materials, and precision matter. That said having a work horse or two in the collection is always a good idea. Otherwise those $200-$??? crazy amazing blades get beat to crap and no longer look like the spendy toys they once looked. Basically if you like it buy it, try it, and use it #NoSafeQueens

Honestly, I have a hard time justifing spending much over $60.00 for most any knife. I do have 2 Lightnig OTF's and gave both my son and daugther one. We like them and they seem to hold an edge really well. But then, we use them for knife things and not as hammers or pry bars. If I was to spend over $100 for a knife, the only one that comes to mind is the large or xl Cold Steel Espada.
The only OTF I would want over $100 would be either a lg Microtec or the Infidel.

  • @Goofiest_goober838
    @Goofiest_goober838 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Ngl I would not pay that much money for a knife of that quality. The only time I would pay that much is if it was a Benchmade or a Microtech. I hear people say that the lightning is an amazing knife and that it is as good as any main brand knife but I would like to see it survive this th-cam.com/video/32JOrqtpyls/w-d-xo.html I personally have nothing against the lightning or its users just the people who think a Chinese knife is better than a Microtech or Benchmade

Let's be honest...if you want to widdle wood or you need a knife for utilitarian purposes? You're not gona go for an OTF automatic.
So I have NO IDEA why so many knife companies emphasize the quality of the steel or the grind in their OTF knives.
An OTF knife is a "stab to the neck in an emergency" knife - for all other jobs? Use a full tang fixed blade....you dummy. 🤣
