Just got this game on PS Plus, and wow, when starting out, I began thinking playing ACTUAL GOLF would be easier, but you're definitely helping me get a better grasp on the nuances, thanks!!
it seems like a completely different game if you have a mouse, granted I had something weird happens and was looking for a good explanation how a good shot vered so far left it put me in rough and +3 for the hole.
I also just got the game, what is there to do. Just play online and pga tours? I come from tiger woods pga tour 2005 era. It had like a story mode (golfed animated AI golfers/characters) and attributes that you could build up. Extremely fun, this is kinda too repetitive.
I love this game so far but I can spend 10 minutes lining up the perfect swing and the ball goes up in the air does a back flip and hauls ass to china. So I’m glad you made this video thanks.
( first time playing pga about 30 hrs played ) Great help understanding controller placement best non biased advise I've found. Really helped me have an understanding of what I need to focus on for dialing in my practice. Thanks !!
These tips literally saved my golfing game. It was insanely frustrating to see the difference in quality of shots I could make with a mouse vs a controller. The follow through release is absolute gold and made my line consistently straight for once on controller. Thanks!
The one thin that helps is taking rubbing alcohol on a qtip and cleaning the sticks to take the grease off and washing your hands before shooting a round. Just like cleaning the grips on your real clubs.
When I've found myself moving the stick too far to the right or left, especially in the Tiger Woods series which was far less forgiving, I would use the technique you showed of grabbing the stick.
Thanks for the tip about letting your finger off the controller at the end of the down swing! Amazing! My shots are about a million times straighter now!! 👍
So my game has gotten to the point that I can read and shape shots and conditions to perfection but the straight shot has alluded me and really can cost shots if you are on a heater and about to post a solid score in a tourney. The "chess piece grip" for the PS4 is a concept I never tried and it is a totally straight line going back. Once I get the timing calibrated it's going to help a lot. Good looks bro, great tip.
I just bought this, and can't figure out where and how to get the uphill/downhill on the aim point marker. I get the yardage, but it doesn't tell me how up/down the target is from the hit point 🤔
Ive actually found that holding the whole controller sideways helps to keep your swing within the swing plane as there is less up and down movement that on its side translates to draw and fade
I’ve just started and the tournaments are easy but getting to multiplayer it’s set to pro and everything goes whack I’ll aim perfect but when I shoot it will go crazy left or right and I have no idea why
Terrific video. Really helpful practical advice. I just got this free with PS Plus and am really enjoying it so far, but wow am I bad! So I’ve subscribed and hopefully with this and subsequent tutorials, I’ll be able to whack the ball better with the stick and get it down that little hole thing.
Some interesting ideas, going to hit the range and try some out. Looking forward to these tutorial videos, hoping they will help me move up the leaderboard on your PS4 society
I have played golf series since tiger woods and just got the 2k21 game. Your tip for straight shot is just what I needed, thanks. I would like to see a tip for doing better ball rotations when going onto the green.
My swing went from horrible to great to bad to okay to great to horrible... which brought me here. I had been experimenting. I have a thumb stick grip thing... that came with something I bought. One has 4 dots. I feel like using them and it makes me more consistently straight. So maybe I should stick with that. Without it I seem to hit fast every shot which is frustrating when there is a hazard or the green falls off on the right. (left handed)
Yeah I’ve tried a lot of these methods but I think it’s the controller at the end of the day. If your analogs are loose it’s gonna mess up the swing line.
I’m wondering if that’s the issue in my case. I only have one controller and it’s fairly old. I’ve always been great at golf games but I cannot get the swing on this one down.
Matt Bostian most likely bro. I’m the same way been playing golf games on PlayStation for 10 years never had a issue even pga 2k21 I was fine then all of a sudden my swing line was everywhere so I think it’s my controller. Need a new one. You probably do too
I tried everything I could think of until my last round of the night. Found that looking at the pad works a treat for me. I had more straight lines abd 'perfect' down swings in one round than 3 weeks combined. Hopefully leads to better scores
Don't even worry if you sometimes make a duff shot. That's part of playing golf anyway. This is controller golf, you can practice a bit but you're really just working with the limitations of the stick and it's design. Enjoy the mistakes and the flukes... it's fun getting yourself out of a difficult situation. If we git perfect shots every time it would get boring.
What about roll out im on the green sometimes and the rollout says 6 yards im going slighty uphill so i put it at 4 yards from the pin i dont use trueshot( im playing on easy so it auto adjusts for the wind i dont play enough to play on hard difficulty) then it rolls a total of like 12 yards rolling way past the hole why?
A very detailed and informative video, thank you. Like yourself, I have been playing the TGC franchise since its conception along with EA Tiger Woods and Links Golf. I have always had a straight shot line but 2K21 tempo is killing me. Cannot get perfect no matter how hard I try. Cannot wait to watch your tips & tricks ideo on Tempo before I go totally mad with frustration. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, experience and insight with us.
Another great video. These are the kinds of in depth things that not everybody will cover so a welcome level of insight. I've moved on to mouse swing as I have more fun that way, but still play a little controller here and there just to not forget how. I especially jive with your tip about small adjustments, it makes a world of difference for consistent swings. Even a millimeter or two can slightly speed up or slow your tempo pretty consistently. Starting your thumb more forward usually slows you down just a little cuz you're finishing closer to the end of your range of motion and naturally slow a bit. Hold it further back and you're more pushing the stick than pulling it forward, which is usually a little faster. And like your other tip, don't be afraid to look down at your thumb placement before each shot to stay consistent.
Good advice Respawn though in real golf we swing around our body so why can't HB Studio make it push right on controller stick to the edge of controller circle to initiate swing, then turn the stick around this perimeter edge circle of the controller to the left & then to the right to feel like we are swinging the club & not silly back & forward? Putting should just be push right & left.
Because this is a game and you don't want to over complicate things to turn off casual players of the game since it is a business and you want to include as many people as you can into your product would be my guess as to why they don't do that.
I was actually surprised to learn how many people swing with the left stick. My line looks like a 1 year old drawing with crayons when I use my left thumb.
Great vid. Not being a gamer I have found it hard to get swing plane and tempo to be good. I'm using a PC with Xbox controller. I tried your way of swinging at it works well. Getting some perfects and straight lines for once. Can't wait for the rest of your tutorials
Great video, looking forward to your series. TIP: Xbox Elite controller users can open up controller configuration and view your stick movement in real time. This will show if you're swinging straight back and forward etc.
Thanks for the info, looking down at the stick has really helped on 100% shots. How do you handle less than full shots, say 80-90% shots, do you still look down at the controller or abandon that approach in order to look at the meter?
On partials you really need to look at the meter (if you are using it) or look at your golfer to know if you are hitting your spots. Looking at the controller will more than likely make you miss the power you are going for. Partials are a different ball game.
This is fantastic. Gave me more than a couple of things to try. I've been shooting under par on Pro settings but I'm relying too much on a fast which becomes unsustainable on more difficult courses. Looking forward to the other videos in this series 👍

Also the tip for looking at the joystick to get straight back and straight forward has been a huge help to make sure I get a cleaner swing path.
Still working on a way to help people with tempo. For me I just found a swing one day. As soon as I can put something together though for everyone I will.
I del8berately calibrated my swing to the slightly slower side.. eradicated red slow completely, and easier to maintain consistency.. now I'm working mostly between slight black slow and regular black fast. Still the odd red fast. .. Actually, still an occasional red slow on silly half hearted partials around the green.
I don't really understand what I'm doing wrong. But my shot will say perfect, or it will be within the white line. But the shot will go WAY right and way short. Like I'll use a driver and get 100 yards And I have no wind. Didn't use true shot. Really confusing.
I'll try the thumb follow through. Been playing for years, level 100, I've tried every controller, I seem to be shanking everything. I wish there was a difficulty in between amateur and pro am because amateur is boringly easy and pro am I'm getting my ass kicked.
I’m struggling with this game and I’ve never struggled with any golf game like this. Including The Golf Club which I was an ace at! And my improvement has stalled. Rarely is my tempo perfect, often slow, sometimes fast rarely decent. I’ve done the calibration several times. Again, I’ve never had this much of an issue with a golf game and I’ve played every golf game ever. It’s very frustrating, controller smashing frustrating.
Same here. The game is ridiculously difficult beyond Pro and even on Pro its harder than Master on TGC19. Doesnt help that HB don't even have a manual for the game.
Are you moving the stick forward just past center or just releasing the stick finishes the swing,? I have seen videos where the player pulls back the stick then just let's go. Nice straight shot. My Xbox, you have to pull back and push forward. THX
