IKR! “Well he could have gone to Germany for the summer and done an environmental program” is basically admitting you would have given preference to someone w/ a ton of money.
College admissions is a joke. We judge by the amount of extracurriculars and test scores. Many of those kids dont even have a true passion. "So whats your major?""Showing off is my major"

This video makes me want to cry. It shows how disconnected admission officer from the reality. "Maybe go to Germany and do something with the environment." Some people don't have money to go on vacation at all or pay for SAT prep courses! And in California this situation can easily occur with the family income higher than 100K
While I do appreciate the effort students exert to get into competitive colleges, I do have to ask why. As a college admission counselor, I tell students to be themselves and don't arbitrarily stack up on activities or whatever in order to impress some name brand university. Do what you like, not what you think some school wants. And if ultimately, you don't get into Stanford, that's okay. If you do your college research carefully, you'll end up at a place even better.
Desirae Downing all his ecs's are unrelated. showing that he probably just did them all to look good on his application, not because he was actually really into them. many kids make this mistake because they don't realize that the admissions team is looking for one or two ecs that extend into further depth, rather than 30 random activities that look good.
@@PoojaG2010 while i do see that point and understand it I do think its unfair for universities to expect this out of their students in their TEENS It like they are casting roles and if you have too broad of an application even though it kicks ass, they won’t let you in because you don’t specialize in one thing thus you won’t fit a specific role I would see how this makes sense for grad school, but i think its unfair on high schoolers that are getting to know themselves
@@priscilamorales6997 I understand what you're saying but this is the case for one of the best universities in the entire world. If they don't hold this level of expectations, then anyone would be able to get into the best. In terms of a general state university like UFlorida or UMichigan, this would definitely be more than enough to get in so I don't think it's fair to generalize "universities" from a video meant for Stanford applicants.
The point is that they know his family income and background, as you have to submit that with an application, so they can make judgements like that correctly.
I’m also broke but I’m severely interested Korean culture so I SEARCHED for a way to study abroad for free and found one. what she doesn’t realize is for the student German is a hobby. I want my languages to be a skill she probably assumes he wants it to be a skill also but HE probably doesn’t. He probably just really likes Germany. You so are right why spend money on a hobby 🤔
Anyone else now scared shitless that this is the kind of person you have to go up against in applying? Also, I sense that there is some serious resume padding here. "Taught himself German"? Probably watched The Sound of Music and now considers himself fluent.
Wow. I'm was thinking of applying for Stanford cause, to be honest, my grades are really good but omg it takes that much. I expected it to be challenging however when I saw this I was stunned....the guy taught himself German. ` Go to Germany". For real who can afford to go to Germany just to have a better chance of getting into a university.
I went to Germany and published a case study last year with college students when I was 15 years old - I’m also very low income but guess what: I fundraised and got scholarships. There’s always a way to do it, just use your resources.
My godmother worked in a lab at Stanford for 30 years. She told me on her deathbed that she had offered to my dad to get us 3 kids in for free and no application (employee benefit). She made that offer first for my brother in 1970 right before the tech boom took off. Dad refused because he wanted to keep us on the farm. She kept her tongue all those years.
This man had amazing grades and test scores and he was still being looked down on. Now I know why college admissions are stupid. Don't get me wrong I got in but when looking at his grades and stuff it's ridiculous to even rule him out
The problem is though, there are 1000’s of students in the US who are in the same boat as this student. Ivy Leagues(especially the higher ranking Ivies) tend to want to find what makes the student unique to those 1000’s of students, which is why she hesitated.
@@Xlebaking Although Stanford isn't technically part of the Ivy League, it is considered as an extremely competitive top school, so the competition is pretty similar to the Ivies.
It’s incredible how these student profiles were impeccable and yet she still found problems. What did she do when applying for college? Did she surpass case 2 in excellence? I find that hard to believe- wish they would remember these kids are only 17.
I wish I had someone to push me hard when I was in high school. These schools have the correct mindset. They mold the highest productive members in our society and they don’t have time to groom a mundane applicant. If the student doesn’t exemplify this, don’t apply to top schools. Everyone isn’t intended to be at that level of academia. Also, excellence is subjective to your own person. Excellence from the school’s perspective is according to the criteria set by that school.
thebigtortuga president it is but being a vp, secretary, treasurer, and public relations is a whole chunk of work load we have a huge school with over 3,000 students so it's not a joke but probably in most schools it is
Marilyn Natalí Sandoval For us all positions are voted in by the students so it’s basically a popularity contest, so it shouldn’t count for anything. We have over 2000 students and I acknowledge that they do work but they still don’t earn their position really
Oh my, whatever happened to letting kids be kids. And I highly doubt this woman's own profile as a high schooler was anywhere near those whom she is passing judgment on.
Stanford gets 30,000 - 40,000 well qualified applicants a year. And they accept around 2,000 - 3,000 of those students per year because of space limitations. With the increasing nation population, you have to be better and better as a student. She probably didn't have to study as much because the application pool was far smaller.
Ham Foodstamp but the number of incorrect answers for a 35 would roughly translate to a similar score on the SAT that he earned. Go look at any SAT to ACT conversion chart and you'll see a 2360 translates to a 35.
"It's next to impossible to be able to do these things" meaning the things colleges require?? Because students go through a ton of shit to live up to the standards of colleges and when they do it's "suspicious"??because they managed??
Don't be surprised. These are the exact same college admissions officers who claim that they want someone who stands apart away from the majority of applicants, yet also claim at the same time that they don't want an applicant who appears strange which most of the extremely highly successful people of all time were first considered strange at some point in their childhoods.
A kid will be perfect and they will reject them because he did too much but then another kid will get in even though he did nothing compared to the other kid
This woman: “The student can’t possibly do all these extracurriculars. I need to give their guidance counsellor a call to see if it’s all true.” Also this woman: “I want to see him do something for the environment in Germany.”
Are you insane. You're looking at a star right there. He's absolutely brilliant, and a social leader as well. A little light on AP? Chances are, he only gave you the 5s.
People seem to think this is outrageous but this is just the state of college admissions today-especially for Stanford (whose admissions standards are either basically unachievable, heavily biased towards athletes, or completely random/based on characteristics not under your control like race and gender). I go to a school that is part of a state university (we take purely college courses for our junior and senior years of high school), where the student population (86% indian and asian) scores the highest on average on the SAT and ACT in the nation (we also have the most national merit finalists per capita), many students publish papers for scientific research they do in university labs, and everyone is heavily involved in leadership positions of traditional clubs and community service opportunities (many students earn over 300 hours over the two years of the program). Despite all of this, we only get about 2 Stanford acceptances per year out of the over 50 students (~170 students per grade) that apply each year. It’s simply no longer even a logical evaluation process beyond recruiting olympic and D1 athletes.
Neither, I work my ass off just like many ohter kids at my school - and I wouldnt consider any of APs "easy" especially (BC calc, Comp gov, Physics C, Bio, Lit)
MopTopRock I meant as in your school might just be so easy that the APs aren't as hard. That's what happened at my old school. the normal classes I take at my current school are harder than my APs there.
2:57 "This student is academically competitive...." WTF does that mean? Answer: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Especially when there's grade inflation all over the place, teachers play favorites, and cheating is rampant, yes, all this, even at the high school level. Back when I went to college in 1981, it felt as though getting into the best college made sense. I'm 53 years old now. Newsflash: If you don't have either rich, connected parents, and/or some kind of weird, special skill (e.g. you're an athletic superstar), you have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting into a top-tier college, and even then, connections matter more than good grades. People should stop wasting money on college degrees that do nothing more than put money into the pockets of colleges and universities.
but how about if your school is incredibly hard and everyone is geniuses? if you compare me with the other people in my school, my chances of getting in are so slim
People understand that the guy doesn’t really have something that shows passion in a particular area. Everyone is mad about how she said the student should’ve gone to Germany but she just lists an example to stack upon the one thing she thought made him standout. She just wants the student to have ECs that come together and paint a picture of interest
I mean... yeah it would be. I'm not sure about you but being a president of a club takes a veRY long time out of your day and to create as well as be the president of 6+ clubs would be impossible for your average high schooler to complete unless they just didn't have a sleep schedule or a social life. If you found a person who claimed to have travelled to every single nation in the world at age 40 I bet you'd be highly suspicious of that as it'd be very difficult to visit every single nation at that age unless you lied.
I’m not trying to offend anyone, but the going to Germany thing was just a suggestion. She said she’d look further into the file and the school’s opportunities. The application process doesn’t judge by income. There are programs and scholarships that could help him get to Germany and prove himself a standout; The type she’d want to see at a prestigious school like Stanford.
This is great insight. A lot of students think that joining a bunch of clubs will make their application standout in a positive way, when sometimes it can actually raise a red flag as you mentioned.
This video makes me sick. It is a shame that students are treated like "CASES" and not human beings. I don't care if they get tons of applications. You hold someones future in your hands and you act like it is a walk in the park by criticizing every detail. You also must ask yourself, if I have to put this much work into getting into a school, is it going to be worth my time and effort to get the degree? Employers do not care what college you went to or what grades you got. A degree is simply a ticket to work. Unless you want to be a doctor or some scientist, do not waste your time on trying to get into a prestige college. It will mean nothing to an employer.
Christopher McKeithen well the video was made with 'cases' so they don't show the identity of the real person and get a possible law suit over it. This is not how all colleges look at applications, many colleges do it differently.
+Christopher McKeithen It depends on the employers. Almost zero employers will even consider for one millisecond of accepting your degree from an infamous for-profit degree mill. There are also extremely few employers who only hire graduates from Ivy League universities. Either way, in most cases, I extremely highly recommend for students to apply to an in-state university for their undergraduate years only if they're planning to major in something that cannot be easily self-taught on their own without college or if they're in desperate need of that fancy piece of paper.
At the end of the day, present the best version of yourselves to colleges. Strive to be authentic and work hard in and out of the classroom. I only have a 3.4 (89.09) GPA and got into the colleges of my choice. Make sure the schools you apply too are the right fit for you.
So what I'm gathering is that if I'm really introverted and have very little experience in EC activities and have never taken any AP classes but I have amazing test scores/gpa, I'm still screwed. Nice. 😨
Juan Perez You're right. Still, its a little scary that someone like me could be denied admission to college just because I'm really shy and pretty busy on school days.
ECs really are to show how u spend ur time. If you're "pretty busy on school days" then consider putting down what you do, whether it be family responsibilities, a job, etc.
3 APs are light?! At my high school, we have to wait till junior year for AP classes and I don’t think there’s any way I can do more than 4 APs. I also don’t want to do to many AP classes that I’m not interested in and at my school there aren’t too many appealing AP classes. There’s no way I’m getting into Stanford or any Ivy League school
Same with my school. It sucks. We basically go from honors courses that are way too easy to AP courses that we have had no preparation for and the teachers don't teach them very well. Fortunately, they're starting to add more AP's and pre-AP's that you can take earlier on in high school so you can have more prep for harder classes and aren't going from all honors and 0 AP to all AP in one year. But, my class and previous classes have really been screwed over because of it. Trust me when I say that going from 0 AP classes to 4 AP classes in one year is really hard. Especially when the teacher's don't do a good job teaching and you have to teach yourself.
The idea that they want you to develop a theme just for the sake of college admissions so that they get a well-rounded class full of “spikey” kids, and that kids actually have to do that and artificially shape their high school lives and act passionate about things they don’t really care bout or enjoy, is really sad. Showing passion in various fields isn’t a bad thing it should be treated positively by admissions; after all college is the place where you find yourself and get clarity. Not everyone has just one amazing thing to offer in life.
I was a 3.1 late bloomer with 1800 SAT. Played varsity football and Model UN...also was on the swim team freshman year (gave that up for football). I took one AP course and took two extra exams. Had to plead w/guidance and my teachers to let me in some honors classes. The end result....I ended going to a university ranked highly in International Relations....#9 in the nation. My peers were stunned since I'm Asian. It's all about the quality of the application. There's some sort of randomness in the process too.
Goodness, this is so harsh. Nobody is perfect and all I hI at is that she wants perfection. And he’s in high school, he’s still looking to find what he wants to do. He’s obviously exploring, or had multiple interests so why are you judging him for that?
What? A B or two? If you have an 3.85 you had to have gotten ~1 B every semester, that's 8 Bs across the whole HS education, more likely 10 with online classes and DE.
I'm thinking after a unbiased consideration 5's across the board are the most rigorous academic schedule that he can handle . not on your level for sure but running you in a parrelell universe to the 10th power.
My school offered 1 AP, was their first year giving AP's and I took it. My school also doesn't have a guidance counselor. outside of the classroom- lol, I went to a school where I had to be there until 6:10 and I also had school on Sundays, These are reasons I have a problem with getting into a good school-lack of resources. Also, has a story that is published that doesn't stand out, I could make a school newspaper and publish a story and I'd have a published story. What does stand out is he taught himself German and is in the Latin club he is interested in Languages/Heritage/Culture; go to Germany to help out the environment-- so you want to see if the student('s parents) has money to go to Germany and are wealthy and see if you could get a portion of that. School, unfortunately, is not a place of education, rather, these schools are businesses!
Holy crap, this guy seems like a legend . can anyone critique my stats? They include.. -4.1 weighted GPA -1470/1600 SAT score - part of Computer programming/ gaming club -20 hours of community and service -Taught 8th graders in a programming convention -had an unpaid internship at a university helping make databases for student attendance - taken 10 AP classes so far - am of middle-eastern/caucasian descent -male in a Public school
cuz we all have so much money to travel to Germany, releasea ton of carbon into the air so we can focus on the environment! Honestly the kind of expectations imposed on literal 15 year olds are absurd
I wanna know what they think about IB Diploma Candidates, bc its not too common and its in general much more intense especially if going to a well known, prestigious ib school
I know it's a bit late and you're most likely already a college graduate but it was recently discovered what IB is like: A lot of colleges are heavily bipolar in how they treat IB but the best way to describe IB's relationship to AP is: AP Gives you a lot of college credit but doesn't substantially improve your chances of getting into a college IB Gives you next to 0 college credit, but your chances of getting to a prestigious university skyrocket. Generally, for most people attempting to make it into a prestigious university I would suggest getting into IB Diploma as the amount of money you'd save from taking AP classes would be offset from the scholarships and financial aid that the schools are most likely going to give you. However, if you don't have plans on getting into a highly prestigious school and are content with a good/great school (i.e school's under the top 100) then take AP classes as the chances of you getting financial aid are lowered and if you take enough AP classes it'll offset any benefits from IB at this level of schools.
If y’all think their gonna be impressed by high SATs/act/ap scores you guys are kidding yourselves...they get AMAZING students applying every year so they get hundreds of applicants with perfect scores and incredible achievements. If they’re not tough on the applications they won’t be able to filter people out. Js🤷🏻♀️
To put y’all’s mind at ease: if a school admits you, they want. If they don’t want you, they will deny you. Why would you wanna go to school that does not want you back? At if you get waitlisted, don’t count in them to forgive out like that. Just think of it as a relationship 😭😭
Listen here, this video was from 2011. That says a lot because a lot can change in 6 years. Everyone says its dehumanizing, yes sure but the standards now a days are way different. Now they don't look at hoagie much you can stuff into your extracurricular 'profile' they look at how much extracurricular you do ACCORDING to what you like to do; which says a lot. That being said, standards are way different now and this video is outdated. Period.
And people pay insane amounts of money to get into schools with the most superficial guidelines for application. What has happened to high education? It's a shell game, now! They want your money! They don't give a shit about /you/!
Why do I only hear the video from my left earbud. I already tested another video to see if my earbuds were the problem, my earbuds are fine it's the video.
A lot of people are taking this video the wrong way when she says that this student who does all of these ECs doesn’t stand out, but I honestly feel like she touches on a lot of correct points. This student’s profile definitely looks like a “I will do all of this stuff because I believe this is what colleges wanna see.” Yes, colleges want a student body capable of filling all of these roles, but THEY DO NOT WANT ONE STUDENT FILLING ALL OF THESE ROLES. They want a well rounded class, not a bunch of well rounded people because the latter can’t contribute to the campus like a bunch of specialized kids can. You gotta ask yourself what this guy will do to contribute on campus that others might not be able to do and I don’t see it with this profile. You just gotta be really really good at one or two things so you can stand out, and not just pretty good at everything because that can rub people the wrong way since admissions officers will see right through you.
Simply having a list of accomplishments does not give admissions officers sufficient information to "see through" a student. There's no way that the only thing he wrote in his essay is that he taught himself German and wrote a short story without elaborating on either of those achievements. She reduced his application to a list, and then complained about it being a list. It's ridiculous.
Yeah obviously essays matter but a lot of people think that just joining a bunch of clubs is the way to get into college and this video debunks that. She did say that we would want to see context within his essays but when looking at ECs it’s totally understandable that someone with that slate seemingly lacks direction
Let's say you have a C junior year in AP physics (unfortunately a 79) due to some tensions with the teacher? I honestly had a pretty rough first semester of junior year due to some personal stress and earned that c and 3 b's but every other semester has been straight A's with the exception of a b in Spanish. I should get straight A's moving forward though. My courses are the most rigorous as well. My gpa is 3.78/4.5 and that probably puts me in the top 5-7% but I'll never know since my school doesn't rank. My test scores are very good, actually pretty much perfect. I also have pretty amazing ec's including lots of personal computer science projects, leadership and entrepreneurship, volunteering, internships, and a little research with a university professor. My teachers speak very highly of my ec's and will write great recs. Also my essays should be excellent. But can this blimp semester really kill me? I'm an upper middle class Asian male from California btw. Rip :(. Thanks!
@@donnakona7615 ...You can attend other colleges that are prestigious, you're just not required to attend Stanford. An example of the kind of school you can attend would be Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Pepperdine is ranked #49-131 (depending on which school ranking you look at) and generally have degrees that are comparable to Stanford or the UC system. The average GPA of a Pepperdine freshman is a 3.5 and the average SAT of a Pepperdine student is a 1350 IIRC. It's really easy to score an admissions in Pepperdine with the grades you have.
I visited the website in the description, but I could not find the other case studies there. Could someone please send me the link to the other case studies?
Dry and emotionless. And how can a perhaps lower income public school kido a "neat thing" like just go over to Germany to bolster his interests and help a "theme" come through with his application? How elitist. Only affluent kids will pass the bar with this gal.
While I'm just a senior in hs, so I'm by no means an expert in the admission process, I believe that the feasibility of doing 6 clubs would depend on (1) how impressive these 6 clubs are, and (2) how related those clubs are. For example, the "Harry Potter Club" is probably less of a time commitment than say, debate or a sports team. In addition, having 6 clubs that are for the most part all related to biology or language or dance or whatever is a lot more plausible and impressive than having them in completely unrelated topics (like the student in the video). It's a lot more believable that a person would be interested in one given subject, and thus have an office in 3 clubs related to that subject, than a person be an officer in three highly unrelated and very difficult clubs. Focusing on one subject/activity also shows more focus, and implies a genuine passion and interest rather than the suspicion that you're just doing these clubs for college admissions. What admissions officers are really looking for a sort of "theme" in your application. They want to know if you are an "athlete" or an "artist" or a "musician" or a "science geek" or what-have-you. That gives them an idea of how you'll contribute to the school and campus life.
Yeah dude, being an actually involved president takes a hell of a lot of work especially with a loaded class schedule. I doubt someone could be a GOOD president of more than 2 or 3 (mayyybe) clubs. Its too much.
At my school, the student body doesn't even elect the student body president. The president is chosen by the student council advisor, which I find bullshit.
hello I'm really late but what would you want when looking at applications? like how many ap classes, sat score, act score, community service hours, extra curricular activities? thanks
All getting elected into student government means at my school is that you're popular. Nothing more....

Umich is a public Ivy tho, I’m pretty sure it’s really difficult to get in.
"Go to Germany for the summer and do something with the environment?" WHAT!
What if the kid comes from a low income bracket. The arrogance.
Agree 100%. If she was an admissions officer at Stanford this makes me ill.
The point is that they know his family income and background, as you have to submit that with an application, so they can make judgements like that correctly.
Even if they know his family income and their not poor his family is probably saving money because they know their son will go to a good college
You so are right why spend money on a hobby 🤔
im doomed.
+marisa noelle I share your sentiment.
Anyone else now scared shitless that this is the kind of person you have to go up against in applying? Also, I sense that there is some serious resume padding here. "Taught himself German"? Probably watched The Sound of Music and now considers himself fluent.
I watched saving Private Ryan so I classify myself as a war hero, such bs
@@hyperion6218 i mean tbf he could literally just be using books
"What's he doing outside of classroom?" Ummm... sleeping?
Wow. I'm was thinking of applying for Stanford cause, to be honest, my grades are really good but omg it takes that much. I expected it to be challenging however when I saw this I was stunned....the guy taught himself German. ` Go to Germany". For real who can afford to go to Germany just to have a better chance of getting into a university.
did you guys get in
Shana Vaid those are very good schools which one are you going to?
Shana Vaid Do you have any tips? I genuinely dream of getting into Dartmouth but I think they'd throw out my application as soon as they go over it.
OneTrue Hitman Stanford isn’t Ivy...
Excellence from the school’s perspective is according to the criteria set by that school.
lol student body pres/vp is a joke…
thebigtortuga president it is but being a vp, secretary, treasurer, and public relations is a whole chunk of work load we have a huge school with over 3,000 students so it's not a joke but probably in most schools it is
Right. You only get voted if your popular
P.S. M But she is a college admissions officer- it's her job.
+Norah Borus Exactly, that doesn't matter.
I always love it when people post this stuff, it's her job to be tough!
Stanford gets 30,000 - 40,000 well qualified applicants a year. And they accept around 2,000 - 3,000 of those students per year because of space limitations. With the increasing nation population, you have to be better and better as a student. She probably didn't have to study as much because the application pool was far smaller.
P.S. M well high school determines what type of person you'll be when you grow up
This is Stanford, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, they look for the best of the best.
Lol a 35 is one point from a perfect score
TheAppleworker but the SAT score is even better. XD xD xD xD xD xD !!!!!!!!! Wtf
Edison Tenecela Because it is. You can still get more than a few problems wrong and end up with a 35 you know
Ham Foodstamp but the number of incorrect answers for a 35 would roughly translate to a similar score on the SAT that he earned. Go look at any SAT to ACT conversion chart and you'll see a 2360 translates to a 35.
xPhobophobia look at percentiles though. 2360 is more rare
I need to give their guidance counsellor a call to see if it’s all true.”
Also this woman: “I want to see him do something for the environment in Germany.”
ya she is the worst
This is so stressful to watch...

go to germany and do something related to the environment? Is this for real..

It’s simply no longer even a logical evaluation process beyond recruiting olympic and D1 athletes.
since when is 3 ap classes "light"...
? Are u kidding me 3 APs is a joke, I took 5 in just one year - will have over 10 by end of high school
+MopTopRock congrats, you either are just naturally gifted or have an easy AP curriculum. No on I know has ever said taking 3 APs is nothing.
+MopTopRock congrats, you either are just naturally gifted or have an easy AP curriculum. No on I know has ever said taking 3 APs is nothing.
It's pleasing to know you're a former admissions officer
Oh please - how many kids do you know that have the money, support, resources or time to just go off to Germany to explore their passion??
jo ratner preach. they're going to college to eventually be able to do this stuff. if they had that kind of money they wouldn't even have to attend xD
@@hayesleo6043 The arrogance. My school offered "cheap" class trips to European countries. It was like $2500. No thanks.
John Karavitis Preach. God bless this comment.
+John Karavitis
Glad that there are some people out there who truly question the grade inflation in our current incredibly flawed grading system.
preach!
but how about if your school is incredibly hard and everyone is geniuses? if you compare me with the other people in my school, my chances of getting in are so slim
bruh same
People understand that the guy doesn’t really have something that shows passion in a particular area. Everyone is mad about how she said the student should’ve gone to Germany but she just lists an example to stack upon the one thing she thought made him standout. She just wants the student to have ECs that come together and paint a picture of interest
Lol "impressive leadership and participation in extra curricular but nothing here really stands out"
college admission officers: SORRY you seem to have too much going on, THAT’S SUSPICIOUS
I mean... yeah it would be.
There is no way they spend so much time on each application - it is touch and go.
Please upload those videos again
This video makes me sick. It is a shame that students are treated like "CASES" and not human beings. I don't care if they get tons of applications. You hold someones future in your hands and you act like it is a walk in the park by criticizing every detail. You also must ask yourself, if I have to put this much work into getting into a school, is it going to be worth my time and effort to get the degree? Employers do not care what college you went to or what grades you got. A degree is simply a ticket to work. Unless you want to be a doctor or some scientist, do not waste your time on trying to get into a prestige college. It will mean nothing to an employer.
lol someone's justifying their low achievement in school...
This is so true
Are they counting the Senior classes or just Junior and below?
Christopher McKeithen well the video was made with 'cases' so they don't show the identity of the real person and get a possible law suit over it. This is not how all colleges look at applications, many colleges do it differently.
+Christopher McKeithen
It depends on the employers.
This is ridiculous, but this is Stanford.
that's just kissing up to college admission..
I would too
3 APs are light?!

Watching this, I definitely know if I don’t try I’m nowhere near to Stanford.
Nicholas Pipitone A- is a thing
How does student body position say a lot? All you have to do is be popular to get those positions?

I get a sinking feeling when I listen to these exacting biographical autopsies. And I’m a Stanford graduate.
I wanna know what they think about IB Diploma Candidates, bc its not too common and its in general much more intense especially if going to a well known, prestigious ib school
Elizabeth Gatz yeah I’m wondering the same thing
I know it's a bit late and you're most likely already a college graduate but it was recently discovered what IB is like:
A lot of colleges are heavily bipolar in how they treat IB but the best way to describe IB's relationship to AP is:
AP Gives you a lot of college credit but doesn't substantially improve your chances of getting into a college
IB Gives you next to 0 college credit, but your chances of getting to a prestigious university skyrocket.
Thank you for this video. I found this very helpful since I've always wanted to see how an Ivy Admission officer works thank you
If y’all think their gonna be impressed by high SATs/act/ap scores you guys are kidding yourselves...they get AMAZING students applying every year so they get hundreds of applicants with perfect scores and incredible achievements.
Just think of it as a relationship 😭😭
wise man
Listen here, this video was from 2011. Period.
this is a highly biased process....why don't they just save their efforts and put all potential candidates name in a bowl and draw a ball/paper/label?
And people pay insane amounts of money to get into schools with the most superficial guidelines for application. What has happened to high education? It's a shell game, now! They want your money! They don't give a shit about /you/!

Why do I only hear the video from my left earbud. I already tested another video to see if my earbuds were the problem, my earbuds are fine it's the video.
My left ear loved this video!
A lot of people are taking this video the wrong way when she says that this student who does all of these ECs doesn’t stand out, but I honestly feel like she touches on a lot of correct points. This student’s profile definitely looks like a “I will do all of this stuff because I believe this is what colleges wanna see.”
Yes, colleges want a student body capable of filling all of these roles, but THEY DO NOT WANT ONE STUDENT FILLING ALL OF THESE ROLES.
Where to mention stuff like you taught yourself German in the application...
you can put it in the additional info section
Why have you made the videos private?
Rip :(. Thanks!
i’m in the exact same boat. what college so you attend now?
@@donnakona7615 ...You can attend other colleges that are prestigious, you're just not required to attend Stanford. An example of the kind of school you can attend would be Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Pepperdine is ranked #49-131 (depending on which school ranking you look at) and generally have degrees that are comparable to Stanford or the UC system. The average GPA of a Pepperdine freshman is a 3.5 and the average SAT of a Pepperdine student is a 1350 IIRC. It's really easy to score an admissions in Pepperdine with the grades you have.
Does the individual need to be a leader before he or she can be admitted?

Everyone listening with their right ear bud:👁👄👁
She’s got such an attitude with this.
Dry and emotionless. And how can a perhaps lower income public school kido a "neat thing" like just go over to Germany to bolster his interests and help a "theme" come through with his application? How elitist. Only affluent kids will pass the bar with this gal.
Doing all of those clubs is near impossible?
I'm in 6 clubs, I'm student body treasurer, and an officer of 3 of those 6 clubs.
...oops?
Not the president? LOL.
That's not even close to significant. Sorry? Lol.
Yeah dude, being an actually involved president takes a hell of a lot of work especially with a loaded class schedule. I doubt someone could be a GOOD president of more than 2 or 3 (mayyybe) clubs. Its too much.
The stereo is so off, it drives me nuts, but ill stay for the video
Well I'm actually screwed because I transferred from a charter school where honors classes were not offered to a public school with inflated GPAs
Does freshman year GPA count ? Because i really ruined my first semester.
Yes, That's when it starts.

why can't a student like all subject..you can't expect someone to be "going the environment route" as a early highschooler
where is the first one?
“Outside of the classroom” wtf does this mean he’s got like a million extracurriculars going on
At my school, the student body doesn't even elect the student body president. The president is chosen by the student council advisor, which I find bullshit.
a 3.85 Unweighted probably means he had 5 B's
hello I'm really late but what would you want when looking at applications? like how many ap classes, sat score, act score, community service hours, extra curricular activities? thanks
Wait what if u like 2 things so there are 2 themes coming out such as science and performance?
Do they really grade me from a bunch of students from my HS that applied to that school? That makes me feel a tiny bit better.
How would this work with an IB student?
what if your school doesn't offer AP classes and tons of extracurricular clubs? seems bogus to me.
