- Ex-F1 driver Max Chilton hurled the bonkers McMurtry Speirling fan car up the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard Hill in practice for the Timed Shootout. His time of 41.29 seconds is one of the fastest ever recorded at Goodwood. Do you think he can break the 39.9 second record?

The driver said on instagram that there's still more time in the car, we could be seeing the record be broken on sunday if the weather holds

standing at Molecomb the speed it went through ther was just insane! & it's much smaller IRL than it looks - it's tiny!
The absolute fastest car isn't necessarily the fastest car up the hill. There's a myriad of variables that have to come together just right to get the record. Who's to say if it'll actually happen, but it's an awesome little machine either way.

to keep in mind: the record currently is held by ID.R with 39.90. This car is only 1.3 seconds behind ID.R. It's really close
Also this was more of a practice run, not the actual timed shootout in which the ID.R set its record time
Imagine the difference in build budgets and company history / experience. Incredible technical innovation
@@legendhasit2568 you have to consider that the big budget manufacturers did much of the financial legwork, which has made the technology cheaper and more accessible to smaller companies like this one.
it is really close but also inanely far away, although just from watching this car go around from the external views it certainly does look more than capable of competing for that record.

That was unbelievable, the way it powered up the Goodwood hill was breathtaking. But it does look like a bat car which was never used for filming, cause they couldn't get the actors egos in.

He will practice again tomorrow and will aim to break VWs record on the shootout Sunday.

That thing looks like it was running on rails... The handling at that speed is absolutely jaw-dropping!!!
Essentially it is running on rails.
The whole design is based around the huge extraction fan on the rear Venturi that creates a massive vacuum under the car.
The ground effect downforce created by the fan exceeds the total weight of the car
It's literally glued to the road by suction.

That's the plan but the races would be a bit short .. The U-shaped battery - structural within the tub - offers 60kWh of capacity and can sustain 30-60mins of flat-out running depending on weather and circuit.

Watched the run yesterday as it happened, blew EVERYTHING into the weeds, absolutely mind bending up the hill, an incredible thing to witness. Made the trip worthwhile on its own!

@@millerchassis6119 you can pretty much go anywhere at goodwood, some of the cars you can’t get up close to and have to stand behind a barrier but most of it is opened pit

@@millerchassis6119 when I went 4 years ago they had the 787B there, can't comment on this year as I didn't go but either way it's worth a trip. Best motorsport weekend there is.

@@julian280302 looking back at the ID.R run this car still looks much quicker in that straight but it just lacks the downforce in the turns compared to the VW which is probably why it was slower than the ID.R overall
@@conradmyers132 Must be pretty intimidating going up the hill with those hay bales either side of you. Of course most of the drivers know what they're doing and are pros though. I mean the dude that did this run is an ex-F1 driver.
This is one of the coolest ventures an ex F1 driver is a part of. This McMurtry is an unbelievable work of engineering 😳
I presume this is Sir David McMurtry's company (co-founder of Renishaw). Fantastic inventor and engineer. I used to work there 👍
Must be do fun, it's faster than the indycars he's been driving.
Nearly half a second faster than the legendary McLaren MP4-13 (1998 F1 car).

Keep in mind that McLaren coincidentally appealed to the owners of Goodwood to have F1 cars doing timed runs at full pelt after they had set said record.

You can thank the fancar aerodynamics for the hunkered down nature. Their website says it makes 2000 kg of downforce at 0 mph. I was thinking it would be nice if they made a cheaper junior version. Then you'd only have to trade a fraction of a kid.

@@DlStreamnet Not every race track has hay bales at the sides of the road. Fan cars spitting clouds of dust out the back won't happen unless one goes off line an hour into a race and gets in the marbles.
They cut it off at the end, it's almost like nobody wants to talk about the fact that electric cars are going to replace almost every combustion engine there.
After 60+ years of watching motor sport, what a privilege to see this run, it defies the laws of physics. The most enjoyable motor sport weekend I have ever witnessed.

This is history in the making. Imagine looking at every other car maker building longer, wider, heavier cars and having the courage to believe that every one of them was wrong. Going it alone and building something wildly different, and on only it's second run it proves to be faster than any Porsche, any Ferrari, any Group B car, any Le Mans car, any *F1* car, any *combustion engine car*.... and the driver says it's got more to give. The other thing that's absolutely astonishing about this car is something I've only just found out...
It's hidden away on page 22 of a brochure on their website, but it's amazing, terrifying and turns the car world upside-down. There's a photo of the back of the car, and below the lights is something that should scare the living daylights out of Ferrari, AMG-Mercedes, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Aston Martin and anyone else in the hypercar market. It's a numberplate.
This thing is going to be a road legal production car.

Yeah it's great until it loses lateral grip and becomes an uncontrollable sideways missile plowing through pedestrians. There is a reason why fan cars were banned in F100. Dangerous cornering speeds. The technology is great but I shudder to think of some idiots ripping through neighborhoods in a road legal car like that.
This car is awesome but they didn't prove to be right or wrong compared to other manufacturers.
And no, it isn't faster than a modern F1 car. Not even close

I saw it on the Start line on Thursday and you could easily hear the suction fan powering-up to its operating speed before the car just launched, seamlessly and utterly without drama, to become Suddenly Over There. Amazing.

That MP4/13 was trying to launch Heidfeld into the hay bales every single time he dared to touch the throttle but he drove it masterfully and set an outstanding time up the hill.

Couldn't agree more, love the sound of V12's, especially on the older cars, and the sound of the Mazda 787 was legendary, but that Valkyrie sounded weak.
Maybe the engine was restricted or the driver wasn't going at full pelt, but that V12 was far from screaming as the video suggested.
This whole time, I thought it was a car that a fan of Goodwood created.

I remember when people keep saying that EV's will never come close to being as fast as a race car.
I think over an actual race track with everything between hairpins and high speed corners like Suzuka it will still be slower than something powered mainly by an ICE. Bonus points for looking dorky tho.
@@xurrasco_021_fanpage Really depends on how long it has to drive. EV motors are lighter, the batteries make it heavy. So with a very small battery it can do a faster lap
Batteries are heavy and through tighter turns that's an issue for electric cars. This hill climb has no hard corners and is only about 1 mile. On a track the ice cars have the advantage of lighter weight and much longer range plus the added benefit of being able to refuel in seconds also as the ice cars fuel level drops the speed increases due to weight loss whereas batteries always weigh the same.

No, there is an open wheel car driven by Robin Shute that is going to smash the IC record. Randy is fast, but he won't be able to hang with that thing. Shute's qualifying runs were 2-3 seconds per section faster than Seb Loeb's runs in the Peugot. Plus there is at least one Unlimited class Porsche that will likely beat Randy as well.

The footage of the timed runs has been poor so far! The gaps between cars has been too close meaning you only see half a run at a time for many! Also the timing splits were all messed up!
Hopefully it will be sorted for the weekend as this part is the main attraction for many.
