OMG! Austinmer is where I grew up in the 70’s and I have seen the station a few times since I moved away in 1983. It hasn’t changed much in 40 years and I have fond memories of catching the train to Sydney and Wollongong when I was a kid. It took about an hour on the old diesel’s as no electrification in those days. I’ve always been fond of that part of the south coast.
I was aboard "Great Southern" ex Adelaide, departing 23 February, on the 'extended highlights' journey. Because the tunnel between Goulburn and Muswellbrook is affected by carbon monoxide fumes from the locos [the engine drivers are required to wear oxygine masks whilst in the tunnel] the passengers were obliged to travel by road coach between those two locations. Unfortunately, this section is one of the most scenic of the entire journey.
They aren’t required to wear the masks, just have them available in case of an unlikely failure in the tunnel given its length and grade it sits on. You can see the Bylong No.3 tunnel in our AK Cars video
