Great to see it... I am Ship scale model Builder.. I do Fiber glass Hollow Rescue boat ... mainly to avoid heavy weight of resin as generally builder do solid Resin rescue boats.
Boy I bet that would give a couple passengers a heart attack , but that’s a better alternative to going down with the ship , the problem is all the chaos when a boat is sinking , can they have the staff stay focused and get them all launched , when a boat may go down in a hour or less ! But still an awesome design , I think the smaller ones , should be used with a catapult design and just launch a whole bunch of them in the water with a weighted anchor
These things can be dropped from 65 meters wonder what the data is there but 20m is not pleasant but childsplay, an Oil Rig is a lot higher and they are safe to use there.
So WHO gets the job of staying outside to pump the release while the rest of the crew gets away safe? Guy who draws the short straw. Moral of story: Keep long straw with you all the time.

The impact is to get rid of the KARENS/KEVINS that are screaming, hopefully all will get brain-damaged from the impact and they can be tossed overboard. GREAT PLAN - listen to launch instructions or DIE!
In full capacity, the impact for the passengers is less strong since the lifeboat will decelerate over a larger distance and go deeper below the sea level. However, in full capacity the impact between the sea and the lifeboat is stronger (more mechanical stress on the hull) but not the impact between the passengers and their belts/seats.
Asthetics should not override safety. These boats are placed so high up in cruise liners or then oil rigs, that when they are released, people inside them experience MORE THAN 10G's which could be fatal for anyone who is old. There has to be a redesign for the placements of these boats or then some release mechanism that heavily reduces the impact of hitting the water

Why not wait for the tanker to sink, and simply float off the davits? They can incorporate air ballast tanks on the stern of the ships to guarantee that part would sink last, or something to that effect, instead of breaking everyone's neck!
SO let me get this straight. you first gota go thru whatever emergency horror thats forcing everyone to abandon ship, then you gota jump in a lifeboat and experience an 150 ft free fall on the waterflum from hell. what next!,, oh least i forget likely a Coast guard helicopter lift. best i stay on dry land.
They are actually designed so that helicopter rescue is out of the question. One by one yes but you have to jump into ocean to get rescued. These are designed so that they can ride them selves to shore. SOme have even survival food on them for few day trip from offshore platform.

I had to recreate the real ship the production used for the film. One of the shots called for the life boats to be launched, as such numerous TH-cam vids like this one came in handy. our real ship was more than capable of launching its boat as a inspection run, but unfortunately the productions Budget couldnt afford it, neither the sorta open ocean shots i was called in to create. People love to complain about CGI in films and trust me, despite being a VFX artist and animator i do understand and agree with the angst. But if not for cgi, hands down more than a third of all modern films could not be produced, not simply because the sorta shots required for films would break most productions budget going Practical. but also due to directors and writers being hacks and needing cgi to fix all the mistakes they make in preproduction. anyways, in getting off subject. lol
So, what happens if the ships over more shallow water, you just die when it impacts the bottom? What if the ships on it's side? What if someone isn't strapped into the harness before it launches? This seems like a stupid idea, and a total waste of time and money.
The ship won't sink if it's in shallow water, it probably can't even sail there so that's no concern. You can launch rafts if the ship is on its side. Most likely they would have already evacuated before the list gets to bad too. That's why it's really important to make sure everyone is strapped in properly. Free fall lifeboats are actually the safest and fastest way to evacuate the ship. So definetly not a waste of time or money.

While something like that is rougher on the body than something like not falling 80ft into the water, there are precautions in the design of the boat to help with it such as: backwards facing seats so your whole body takes the impact and your neck doesn't snap forward, specially designed bows to help the boat cut through the water and slow down more gradually, and calculated angles for how the boat comes off of the main ship so it enters the water as smooth as possible. It's only releasing from outside for the test purposes. There's a lever inside for the coxswain or crew to release while safely inside the boat.
