    Some great future content in the refurbishment of those first few machines, really looking forward to seeing the investigation processes as you strip away the hardware to see the extent of what's needed to bring back those machines that were otherwise heading for the scrapyard.

    Hello Max. I don't envy you with the work you have ahead on the HBM. I've had mine for just over a year and I'm only about half way through getting it up and running. Fortunately on mine the ways were hardened and are all in good shape. Mostly its been a job of disassembly, cleaning, replacing bearings and small repairs and reassembly. I put close to $900 worth of bearings in one gearbox alone. Ken

      @swanvalleymachineshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken . I will tackle the bed first & depending on the outcome that will help me decide how much i spend on the gearbox . They are a super expensive machine to get if they do not need any repair work . 👍

      @@swanvalleymachineshop I'll be interested to see what you do with the bed ways. My Broadbent Schofield lathe has large, unhardened bed ways that are severely worn. The underside of the saddle is also severely worn. Once my HBM is up and running I will be able to machine the underside of the saddle but I still don't know what to do about the ways. Maybe I'll pick up a tip or two from you. Ken.

    That looks like an amazing machine! I see a number of TH-cam machinists using horizontal boring mills, including Josh Topper, and now Kurtis at CEE Australia has a horizontal facing machine, which is similar. They are great for working on bearing and bushing chocks that are too unhandy and dangerous in the lathe. Illkirch-Grafenstaden is in the south of Strassbourg and I happen to know a very good restaurant there! LOL Thanks for showing us this interesting machine.

    Max, I meant to add that a guy I know here in California has many yards and warehouse buildings filled with old machinery and parts and tooling and has a Leblonde that is a Giant with the Chuck that is incredibly huge. He is pulling the Chuck and the machine is being scrapped for the metal at minimum of $3500 US Dollars. It's a sad time where our Vintage Machinery is being melted down to supply industries for the needed resource to most likely build junk of today and tomorrow. Saving 1 at a time will hopefully teach our History years from now. Most of my grandkids love my old equipment but my 14 year old granddaughter says I'm happy that this makes you so Happy, Papa... she understands the relationship and passion thing.... Ricko

    Dear Max and channel. I was delighted to see the fact of a machine as 1954 vintage, with a concept to restore to horizontal boring.
    why would it matter? Well, to the electrical power. Here, the process to a machine footprint? *Large. With a sturdy power input. So in a shop .....fitting the device to best safety, sure production as lessened hazard and well thought out power supply, is within study as typical to a shop and production.
    My shop is in fact, small. Thus, critical decision as to 220v supply, as to serve end use but fall within every notice as protect from incidental water, sump, drain, and mounting as floor or riser. The weight of components. The natural placement to tool table, waste chip bin, light from above....all are within the needed plan. And the service of weldment. Which is a power terminal, also.
    Before the chip product is made.....a practice to the long term power supply is critical. And for Max and viewers, taking the time to plan the metrics of a shop layout.....where the hours at task are to be met and (possibly enjoyed)...well, need and require well protected service. (electrical) that have the strength and best plan to delivery, end user safety and production. Tools at hand, fitment as useful to travel at physical constraint....adventure to this Max shop but so interesting to learn from. As expansion may happen. M.

    I would get a pair of those precision ground flat stones and stone the ways and let it go.

      Thanks . It is a similar type of machine . My one has the facing head as well as the boring spindle . It will be an interesting restoration ! 👍

    That scale of restoration looks like a full time job for a year, when you have to do it all yourself. It will certainly earn you a seat at the bar where machinists drink.

    Looks like it's toast, or at least lots of work regrinding/scraping the bed and new leadscrew...

      @swanvalleymachineshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of work ahead , but it has to be done . Leadscrew is no problem , just the cost of a new bit of shafting & bronze for the nut . 👍
