    Looks good Max. The method of making the semi-circle oil grooves is clever. I have thought of doing this to the tailstock of my lathe but have never got around to it. Like you I thought of using flip top oilers. I thought of putting them at the back of the tailstock as I have clearance issues on the sides. (The carriage wings pass very close to the tailstock.) It must feel good to finally be doing machine related tasks instead of shop building related tasks. Ken

    Gday Max, the oil grooves turned out spot on, with the head tilted at 48° could you move the X axis rather then lowering the quill?, I’m just think if I could do the same with my tailstock on the Cincinnati, brilliant job as always mate, Cheers

    • @simpleman283

      Moving the X axis would widen the groove.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matty . You would have to mount the part on a tilting base as not to widen the groove . A small one like that i would probably use a dremmel .

      It’s inspiring to see his workshop build - basically all on his own, with only a little assistance here and there like concrete and roof. The rest all on his own.

    I'm sure your oiling upgrades will work, I'm pretty curious how much oil will run through the system in operation. I put oil cups on the bronze oilite bearings of my bench lathe countershaft, and was shocked at how quickly the oil ran out. I really didn't expect the oilite material to allow that much flow, much less with new bearings and shaft.

    Nice work Max, but to add a little complication to things I think I would add some wick material anchored in the hole to the oil cup and run down the center groove to the distribution cuts. Otherwise the oil would just run down the sides and out the bottom of the V way and very little would get to the grooves. 👍👍

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The oil will run along the top of the v way & down the grooves . That's why the grooves intersect the centre groove of the v way . The wipers will retain a lot of the oil & because the grooves are not cut all of the way down the v , some oil will be retained there . A squirt of oil in the cups when the lathe is oiled daily will be enough . 👍
