I can tell by the way that dog sits on your lap he is totally at home and at peace. For a shelter dog to do that after such a short time speaks volumes about the high quality of your character and just general good personhood.
Personally, I wouldn't get a dog any other way. There are valid reasons to get a dog from a breeder, such as the need for a working dog, like a service dog. But personally speaking, I think there are extremely few reasons to buy a dog.

Arthur is utterly adorable! Congrats to you and Tara! If he's a Border Collie mix, it means he'll need very conscientious training and a job to do when the humans aren't home to prevent him from getting bored, and hence, destroying your house. 🥰
Absolutely! Border Collies need a job, and a lot of exercise. One thing Arthur may try to do is herd the cat. Cats don't herd very well. It is possible that they will form a friendship, but a lot of times, dogs and cats in the same house just ignore each other.. Arthur may also become protective of the cat, and consider it his job.
@@garylangley4502 My heeler/shepherd herds the cat. I have taught him not to corner herr, but he still needs to know exactly where she is at all times. Unless you live in one of the million communities run by home owner associations that either don't allow them at all, will allow maybe one or two, and/or micromanage every peep, squeak and bark an animal makes and try to get them evicted (or blame an innocent animal for another's deeds and scapegoat them... happens more often than you'd imagine). One of the major contributing factors to the amount of dogs in shelters to begin with. Some cities are almost impossible to find homes that are NOT in an association, like Houston, as an example. Other cities, large and small, have city laws as well. You need to call a town hall to find them out before moving there. I had to leave one town because of dog ordinances I hadn't known about. Some have mandatory castration laws. Some mandatory veterinarian laws with annual shots that are not only not necessary, but will endanger the life of your dog, if given too often. The U.S. has more laws and restrictions than any other country I've ever lived in, or even visited!
As I listen to you baby talk your new puppy I'm aware that my own life just got happier. Congratulations on the addition of Arthur to your family! He's one lucky pup!

Congratulations on rescuing Arthur! We rescued a border collie mix on Thanksgiving weekend. She was a year old, and still 100% puppy. Her favorite activity is going airborne onto the bed. Herding her people into the same room is a sacred duty. She takes that responsibility seriously. I suspect Arthur will do likewise.
As the rescuer of another Border Collie mix, now 2 years old, I can safely say they never grow out of the puppy phase. Also, she will learn to outsmart you. Be ready.

I know, right?? Most of my dogs have been black because of that. I currently have two black ones and a red one. They're all the best dogs I ever had. 😆
That’s true. We have a black Lab that we got from a shelter. Got the other one, a golden like color, Shib/Shep mix from a different shelter. Each has their own personality. They often assume the same positions when next to each other, like bookends. Too cute. It’s a heart breaker to go thru a shelter knowing that with your heart, you’d like to get a bunch of them but financially and sometimetimes house - yard size, it’s best to limit oneself.
When I adopted my black cat 10 years ago from the shelter, I was told the same thing about people being superstitious by black cats. I had never heard that. My cat has been a wonderful companion all these years. Enjoy your days with Arthur. Pets add so much to our lives, just wanting to be with us.
Yeah, I plan on adopting a black at because I work in the funeral industry, so all my clothes are black lol. Having the fur be less noticeable would be a massive plus (it would also enhance the mortuary look)
Black cats are my favorite. I've had 3 over my years of owning cats. All 3 fetched like a dog. They were obsessed with the game. And one I had learned to pee in the toilet all by herself.
You have adopted not only a dog but the requisite "puppy voice" when speaking to your dog. Absolutely necessary for communication. Congrats! Extremely heartwarming.

Congratulations on getting Arthur. We adopted a rescue dog when he was 4 months of age and had 16 wonderful years with him. Pets are family ( as you'll already know with your cat) and I'm sure Arthur will give, and have, many years of joy with you.
This makes me just as emotional as finding out you became a citizen. Welcome home, Arthur 💜 Edit: hearing a British person baby talk to a puppy is both funny and so endearing 😂❤
Fellow puppy papa here (also in Chicago). Congratulations to you and Tara. Like you, we adopted our Bailey at six weeks old, and nearly nine years later, she's STILL the baby!
@@danwasson1930 I'm a dog lover, but I used to have a roommate that had a dog that I called Satan. I think the Devil didn't appreciate the comparison. :-)
Aw, welcome Arthur!! Kafka will get used to Arthur in time. Patience is key. Laurence, everyone with a puppy or dog has that special voice when we speak to our pets. It's adorable.
Arthur is a real cutie! 😍 What you said about wanting to save them all hits home. The one time I actually adopted one from a shelter, I left an emotional wreck. I knew there was no way I could do it, and that was somewhat traumatic for me. Since then, I've taken in both cat and dog strays, plus gotten them from various people looking to rehome them. I also do my part by spaying and neutering all my pets. At present, I have two dogs and 6 cats. 3 of my cats are black. I adore black animals!
Apologies to all the other videos, but this is hands-down my favorite! Thank you for going to a shelter, and thank you for considering less-adoptable dogs! It's so obvious you two are going to be amazing dog parents, and it's quite clear that Arthur already loves you. Good luck with him, and I hope he makes more cameos in future videos!
Arthur sounds wonderful! If you don't have puppy pads, you should probably get some. Puppy pads are things you can put out at home, perhaps near the door, where he can have his accidents in the house. They are absorbent on the top and waterproof on the bottom.
Oh my word, you sound so happy in those videos being outside with him. Not that you didn't seem happy before - it's just like he's pulled open a little piece of your heart. Congratulations!
Arthur is adorable, he seems to be bonding to you so well. Congratulations on making him feel secure and relaxed with you, he's going to give you and Tara so much fun and, of course, the utter love and loyalty our dogs give unstintingly. Love his name too and am looking forward to seeing him grow and thrive. Arthurian legends of the canine variety will be well documented by you I'm sure.
Arthur is adorable! With our puppy, we also said “hurry up” over and over until she peed, then praised her lavishly when she did. Her whole life she knew exactly what the phrase hurry up meant. Do you need to hurry up? -she would go to the door. “Hurry up” on a walk -she knew to get down to business. She was a good girl and I’ll never stop missing her. A dog has your heart for your whole life.
That adoring look on his puppy face when he looks up at you is precious. Beware though, it means he sure has your number! The dog my husband didn't want gave that very same look to him and moved into our home for the rest of her life. I think you have found yourself a great companion!
Arthur is absolutely adorable! I couldn't help but pay attention to how he was acting after the dinner bell story. Throughout the video he seemed to be looking at what you were doing rather than responding to your voice. My dog is deaf and she doesn't react to things like that either (nor does she bark), and we didn't notice until she was around Arthur's age. Obviously, it's hard to tell definitively as an outsider watching a 7 minute video, but if you *do* find that he's not responding to you calling for him or other sudden, loud noises then you might look into his hearing. Just thought I'd give you a heads up!
I noticed the same thing. He might just be a quiet soul, but given his exuberant puppy behaviour otherwise, it's worth checking on, just to be a bit more protective of him out-of-doors, and to give others a heads-up about being careful not to come up on him suddenly from where he can't see them coming, to avoid a startle/snap reaction. I would think the shelter would have noticed/checked, tho, so it might just be his quiet way.
When my pug started to lose his hearing, I taught him ASL! I'd already used it on my son when he was non verbal ( he started to talk around age 5) so i thought why not, and Herbie - my pug, not my son ( he's Jayden lol) understood almost immediately! Basic signs were all we needed so I used "baby sign" like I did with my son.
Oh my goodness, if this is true! Not because of the poor dog but that's probably this man's luck 😂, but that would make him an even better dog! I'm sure of it.
I was thinking this too. He may not bark because he doesn't hear other dogs barking. He is very visually alert to your movement. Such a cutie! Congrats on your new housemate.
He's perfectly perfect! Bless you and your wife for adopting him. You are wonderful! Contrary to weird beliefs, my dogs and cats have ALWAYS gotten along. In fact, they are the best of buddies. Eons ago, we inherited my grandmothers ancient cat. She buddied up immediately with our Cocker, Charlie and spent the last 4 years of her life snuggled with him. I think he made her feel safe and protected when she was sleeping. to all of you!
This is my first time coming across your channel and I instantly subbed after you said you adopted him bc black dogs are often overlooked. You’re absolutely right and I thank you from the bottom of my animal rescuer heart. ♥️
Congratulations, Arthur is destined to be your new best friend. He's very handsome indeed. He seems to be very good natured, which is a great quality. You've probably been told that giving a small treat for desired behavior is a great training tool, and that's correct. Especially true for pottying outside. Until he's completely trained, don't give him any treats for anything else. If you do, he'll be confused about being rewarded. Hard to resist, but that can change later on. Good luck with your sweet little guy. I think you all hit the jackpot the moment you met.
As someone who has a black dog, I love that you chose him partly based off of that. I didn't know about black dog syndrome until after I got mine but I've also read that black dogs can appear scary because of how they are used in movies and TV shows and that they supposedly don't photograph well. It makes me sad that there are so many great dogs that get passed over because of that. Mine is also some sort of collie mix. Either a lab/border collie or something called a McNab collie. He is very smart which does make him easy to train, but it also means he's smart enough to be able to work around training as well.
Black anything can be harder to photograph. Portrait photographers have to light dark-haired people differently. Black people in front of a white backdrop are extremely hard to photograph or film, but good set and lighting designers will use backgrounds and colors that will help everyone look their best. It's all about the physics of light and how it interacts with the optics of cameras and human eyes. Biologically, the extra pigment in black skin or hair tends to change the texture, too. I've heard that a blind person can feel the spots on an Appaloosa horse.
A big part of why black cats and dogs get used the way they do in media is probably due to old (mostly) European folklore surrounding them. They're often considered bad omens, specifically omens of death, or associated with the devil in some fashion.
What a darling boy. He's obviously comes from a home where he had some kind of love. He seems so trusting and comfortable with you. Good luck, and welcome Arthur!
Arthur is a doll. Be prepared for a herder, especially when you have people over. I had a collie-shepherd growing up and I noticed him doing that to the people when we were gathering outside. I thought that once you had a house with a yard it would just be a matter of time until you'd have an Arthur. Way to keep the name in the family!
I think I’m sitting next to your pup’s bio sibling in a vets office. No joke. I’m 90% sure they are litter mates. Adopted same time and I believe same shelter. Soooooo adorable!!!
What a wonderful thing you've done for yourselves and Arthur! Also I love your "puppy" voice.😊 I had the pleasure of living with my black dog, Pete, for 17 happy years.
Congratulations! He’s adorable! Looks likes he’s also mixed with a low rider. There’s a likelihood he’ll be smart, but with smart sometimes come mischief. It’s a great idea to give a clue word or phrase to encourage potty time. Worked well with most of the dogs I’ve had and is useful in bad weather or otherwise in a hurry. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming adventures together!!! ❤❤❤
Congratulations on your new pup! I'm SO happy to know you got him from a shelter! There are so many puppers out there that need good homes. Arthur is gorgeous, and his eyes are amazing!
Great idea for another episode! Get a doggies DNA test to find out the breed mix! You can have people guess before revealing actual mix! Congratulations on you adorable puppy!
I love that you acknowledged the desire to adopt all of them and bring them home to live in your small home. I think some people (insert crazy cat lady here) struggle with that boundary.
The last city I lived in the dogs were adopted out before I could get in to see them to adopt one. I had to go every day to find a dog to call dibs on. They were leaving like hotcakes. The only exception to that is pitbulls, and even they found homes eventually. Our city shelter is low kill. The only dogs they euthanized were the really sick ones. And this was before the pandemic hit. Now there are never any dogs to be had. They get maybe 2 or 3 in a week. I think this is largely because California has strict laws about breeding animals and selling them.
@Karen Holmes unfortunately that goes against everything I'm hearing and seeing. Most shelters are so far over capacity now that people are dumping the dogs they adopted during the pandemic, that even more are being euthanized. Before it was around 10 million a year being put down because shelters had no space. Now it's even more. Lately, many shelters have even stopped accepting dogs. Breeding bans are long overdue but even that will take decades to save a substantial amount of lives. Over breeding has created a literal annual holocaust for these poor babies. Sadly, at most shelters, if there are few dogs to choose from, it means many have recently been killed to create more space.
@@MG-pj2oo besides, people should refuse to pay over a few hundred dollars for puppies. Once breeders realize they cant sell puppies for profit, they'll stop excessive breeding. There should be a permit per litter required to sell puppies.
Congratulations Laurence and fam!!! Doggos are the best boys and girls!! Rescue is the way! Always!! Arthur is a super boy! You are awesome rescue pet parents now!! ✨🎉✨✌️ Also, what you did is good. The positive reinforcement is crucial. And always calling potty the same thing creates a routine. My 3 rescues all know as soon as I say "down below, let's go" that it's time for pp/ poops. I say down below not because the potty parts are down below, but because our property is on a hill. 🤣
Best episode ever! Arthur is TOO CUTE! I thought he was named after the character Arthur played by Dudley Moore. 😀 Congratulations on your new fur baby!
Thank you for adopting a shelter dog. Border Collies are the smartest breed of dog. If he has even a little, he will be easy to train. Arthur is a fabulous name and a way to honor you Dad and Grandfather. He is absolutely adorable! ❤️🐾
You can definitely count me among Arthur's adoring fans. Having had Border Collies (or Border Collie Mixes) as our current and 2 prior dogs, let me congratulate you on choosing a "working dog". Our current dog, a Border Collie and Pitbull mix, has been taught to go to the mailbox where I give him the junk mail, which he then runs to the recycling box in the back yard and drops them. He also barks at the toaster when it pops up and waffle iron and microwave when they beep if I'm not in the room.
Working dogs are the best! Growing up, I had a GSD who learned, on his own, to alert my mom when it started raining so she could shut the windows, and would bring her her purse if her work beeper went off overnight 😂
He's terribly chill... My kind of dog, baby. 😄 My dog, Venus, who's been gone for quite some time now, was veeeery laid back. That's why I picked her over her siblings back when she was a puppy. A handsome, nonchalant, lil pup king, that Arthur. 🥰
Ooooh, Laurence, your little fur baby is so adorable. You and Tarah are about to learn what unconditional love is( if you didn't know already). It's worth all the chewed-up slippers and piddle puddles.❣ Trust me. Love your channel.
Buy extra remote controls for the telly now! Always a bummer to have to wait until they've been chewed up and then have to wait for a new one to be delivered. I always remember to put the clicker up high, but not everyone does, and for some reason are VERY enticing to puppies!
I love that you and Tara aren't even set up in your new home, and you go out and get you're selves a pup!! Love Arthur, please feature Arthur large in your new videos!
Very happy to meet Arthur!! He seems to fit in perfectly. The training will be ok if you can be consistent. If he does have border collie in him, he will be easily trained. Basically, he will train you! I had a neighbor who tied a bell on a rope and hung it on the door the dog would be asking to go out. He would soon learn to ring the bell when he needed a potty break. Best of luck with your new family member. 😊
We have two border collies. 1, when he gets older, if he has long hair any joint will get LOADS of felts, so it will really help to get him used to being groomed all over now! 2, ours have so much energy that it really, really helps with their energy output to go for a mile walk in the morning and another mile walk at night. If they get antsy during the day, take them out for a run. Snuffle rugs or enrichment food toys will be a good idea as well. They'll mellow out by age 3 or so. Arthur is adorable and I wish him many happy returns with you and your family!

Edit: hearing a British person baby talk to a puppy is both funny and so endearing 😂❤
I was thinking that British puppy talk was adorable!
He's no longer a British person, he is an American now!
@@elleryeggen9678 We just have to wait for the cute nicknames now!
@@elleryeggen9678 Well dual citizen I think.
@@gemoftheocean Nope.
Fellow puppy papa here (also in Chicago). Congratulations to you and Tara. Like you, we adopted our Bailey at six weeks old, and nearly nine years later, she's STILL the baby!
He's adorable - Congratulations! He clearly loves you already and it appears to be mutual.
Arthur looks like such a sweet and good boy. I hope he gets on with the cat!
All dogs are good boys or girls.
What you said about wanting to save them all hits home.
Black cats are my faves too! 🐈⬛
It’s time Lost In The Pond pivots the business and focuses 100% on puppy videos.
Now, this is the content I want most.
Love his "doggy dad" voice!
Arthur needs his own channel tbh
Arthur sounds wonderful! If you don't have puppy pads, you should probably get some. Puppy pads are things you can put out at home, perhaps near the door, where he can have his accidents in the house. They are absorbent on the top and waterproof on the bottom.
Arthur is so cute! Congrats on the new addition to the family! Dogs are the best.
Oh my word, you sound so happy in those videos being outside with him. Not that you didn't seem happy before - it's just like he's pulled open a little piece of your heart. Congratulations!
Like dogs do 😊
I agree!! I love the voice and I think they do as well 🤍
If Arthur's not adorable then I don't know what is. Thanks for sharing him with us!
I taught mine “go potty”. It’s their best trick tbh 😅
@@laurencooper654 I used that for mine too 😊
I use “let’s go potty box” for my dog. Since my cats use a litter box, I went with the same idea.
Arthur is adorable. Thanks for sharing him with us! He's destined to be a YT star. :)
He is kinda cute but he is definitely NOT a border collie. That's for certain.
He’s a beauty! Having a dog son in your family will be a joy for you both.
This is so wonderful! Thank you for adopting a shelter dog! 💖
I guarantee Arthur has the sweetest soul. Those eyes just melt
my heart. Many blessed years with him!!
Intelligence shines in his eyes.
@@christaverduren690 - Oh, what a great idea, even for dogs with good hearing!
Crate training is more effective if you shorten the crate so he doesn’t have too much room. Dogs don’t like to pee where they sleep. He’s a cutie!
Arthur is so adorable 🥰 It’s great that you chose a black dog! A very thoughtful choice 🙂
Two black dogs and counting 😊
@@EXROBOWIDOW this sort of thing is why I call my black cat a "random patch of darkness". She mostly shows up as eyes in pictures
Arthur is absolutely adorable! Congrats to you and your wife. You are now proud puppy parents! 🐶
Nothing like a dog to bring on baby talk, love him and your reaction to him.
And lots of talk about about, uh, toiletries.
Loved the baby talk.
I love Arthur’s short little legs. He’s adorable and I’m so happy you found each other. 🐾 Arthur will be the star of the show now!
He doesn't have short legs, they reach all the way to the ground don't they?
I agree. All of my dogs pee and poo on command. Comes in handy during torrential downpours and blizzards... like tonight!
Congratulations 🎉 Arthur is absolutely gorgeous! Those eyes are to die for! Welcome to the Cat/Dog club 👍🏻
What an amazing addition. You guys are so great to make the effort to find a less chosen pup. Lucky Arthur, he is an adorable fur baby.
Ahhhh! Congratulations Laurence and Tara! You're putty in his hands! ❤️🐕
My first question when I saw this was "Uh oh, how does the cat feel about this??" haha. Glad to see you adopted a black dog! He's adorable 💜
Owning a dog is a lot of work, but so rewarding. I wish you many happy years together.
You deserve a medal for getting that little soul out of the shelter ❣❣
Arthur is adorable. Thank you for adopting a rescue dog. He's a lucking dog. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congratulations on your new pup! I'm SO happy to know you got him from a shelter! There are so many puppers out there that need good homes. Arthur is gorgeous, and his eyes are amazing!
Arthur is beautiful! So happy to see that you went to the shelter and adopted! He's already perfectly settled in your lap! Congrats!
Great idea for another episode! Get a doggies DNA test to find out the breed mix! You can have people guess before revealing actual mix! Congratulations on you adorable puppy!
Arthur is absolutely, unequivocally, the epitome of cutesypootsytootsywootsyadorableness!!! Congratulations on your new widdle pupperz!
❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
It's me. I want all the critters to come live in my home 😍
Also, what you did is good.
@@Mathguy363 that sounds like an interesting mix
@@Mathguy363 i bet, 2 high energy breeds
You can definitely count me among Arthur's adoring fans. Having had Border Collies (or Border Collie Mixes) as our current and 2 prior dogs, let me congratulate you on choosing a "working dog". Our current dog, a Border Collie and Pitbull mix, has been taught to go to the mailbox where I give him the junk mail, which he then runs to the recycling box in the back yard and drops them. He also barks at the toaster when it pops up and waffle iron and microwave when they beep if I'm not in the room.
that's so nice, IMO, dogs like to have something to do, ie like take your junk mail to the garbage
Oh he’s such a good boy!! He picked you and Tara as his new “pack” at the shelter meet & greet. Congratulations and cheers to all of you!
Arthur is a treasure! So glad you found each other.❤
We have two border collies.
Congratulations on the new puppy!! That little gray spot on his chest brings to mind a cattle dog. He is just precious! 😍
Cattle dog, absolutely!
He's adorable! Congratulations on the new family member! ❤️ 🐶
Ooh, Lawrence! This brings me so much joy. I love the name, even before the explanation. It's lovely!
Ah Lawrence!!
Congratulations!!!
