Thanks Ivan, for this brilliant update. I went to 'Wilko's' and 'Poundland' today and spent a small fortune, lol. What I did get from 'Poundland' was some more rolls of copper tape to put around my pots and containers to fend off the slugs as I found that it works, it doesn't kill them but they won't go over it and they were £1 a roll that are 2 metres long. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Anks for your reply last week it was sunny (a shock for scotland)this week usual rain, today sunny but windy.Maybe its the wind from you yesterday had to retrieve a panel from my greenhouse Its not even winter and the strong winds we get so not looking forward to winter bye for now hope the weather settles down.
Ivan, fabulous update demonstrating that you can get a plentiful supply of most vegetables when grown in containers. I think you are spot on when you say just sow more seeds, what can you lose? I'm still going to sow more dwarf French beans, even though the books and seed packets suggest it's a little late. As you rightly point out, what works in one area of the country may not in another but always worth trying. Thank you.
Ivan im going to sow some Carnation - double striped, Chabaud mixed and Marigold dwarf French - Durango red and some more Spring Onion - Paris Silverskin :)
thanks for the tips! I've noticed my pak choi (Chinese cabbage) starting to bolt, but I've heard you can eat the buds. So I'm going to try and wait for them to develop a little more and pull them up. will make a nice stir fry along with my dwarf French beans :). I'll prob plant more pak choi as well.
I've just sown more spinach, and if it stays too hot, I might keep it inside as well because everything I had outside just bolted. :( I'll wait and see how things go when it's big enough to transplant.
Great informative video Ivan Thankyou, Im subscribed to your cooking chanel and couldnt believe I'd never known how to skin baby onions/shallots quickly with the blanching method, always used to pickle my own but skinning them got too much, but after watching your vid Ive decided to get some shallots planted. Can I ask where do you buy your onion sets ftom and your 2nd early charlotte new potstoes, Ive been to my local Wilko, Poundshop & B&M and cant find sets anywhere. Thankyou
You have inspired me once more... i have sown more spring onions, dwarf beans, peas , a few kale and broccoli and used up the last of my lettuce + parsley + spinage seeds in one bowl.. that will be an interesting mix for salad leaves. 😊
You always inspire me to go plant something, However the heat is too intense here now, But by the 1st of Aug I'm going to be planting my little heart out. We have grasshoppers everywhere this time of year. They eat up everything. I've decided by next year I'm going to have something set up to cover all my plants.
Thanks Ivan, as always very helpful and informative, definitely going to try kale, broccoli and dwarf french beans. Could I grow greyhound cabbage for the spring. Thanks for sharing.
Greyhound is more of an early Cabbage than an over winter one try something like Winter King or January king There is nothing wrong with having a go with the greyhound at least then you will know how it does Thank you Sheila
Very interesting Ivan, hope my broccoli doesn't Bolte 😢 looks ok so far, I've got golden acre cabbage growing that's looking good so far aswell, planted turnips last week, hope everything else comes along ok what I've planted, first time growing all this veg, I'm loving it, & thanks for all the advice & input...
Some great tips there Ivan , thank you. We have never grown veg for Autumn/Winter before, so as Sundays are our sowing day will be trying the snowball turnips for first time for our winter stews, plus all the others you mention. l had no idea there was so much that can still be sown in July.
Hi Ivan I showed some Xmas cabbage & cauliflower several weeksl ago they are 6-8"long now if I transplant them up to the first leaves will they grow ok or am I wasting my time outside several of my plants have bolted to flower or have been eaten by my slugs and snails thanks for any advice you can give me .
Hi thats not a problem plant them right down to the v to make the plant more stable Bolting can be a problem its due to changes in temperature and inconsistent watering we lost all our Broccoli to the same thing slugs and snails on the other hand are just as big a pest maybe set beer traps Thank you
Thanks so much Ivan, I’m trying in earnest to get to grips with staggered sowing and trying to keep everything going as long as I can. One question though Ivan, my courgettes are doing really well and we have plenty fruit growing on them. However, the flowers keep ending up mouldy and thus the end of the courgette ends up mouldy and rotting. We have had a lot of rain over the last week, but what could be causing this and is there anything I can do to avoid it happening?
Down in Cornwall we’ve got courgettes tomatoes and cucumbers coming out of our ears, spinach has bolted though . The pep spinach is still good because I’ve got it in a shady area. You’ve inspired me to sow even more seeds now.
All of my spinach bolted too! Even my perpetual, which I left in the most sunniest part of the Garden. I'll definitely put in a shady part next year like you have.
Thanks for all the information for July. Can you tell me where you get the trough planters you use for you young salads and the size of them?
Thanks! Once again great info. Enjoy the July coffee. Kevin J.
Lovely Thank you so much Kevin

Try smearing Vick around the rims of pots of collars. It’s saved all my greens after the little slimy pests decimated my first courgettes.
Brilliant i will take a look in Wilko this week
Thank you Stevie
Great tip Thank you Katya

Hi Martyn the last egg laying is August to September

Yes as long as you keep it warm and offer light it will be fine in other countries they are treated as a Perennial House Plant
Thank you
Even in the shade my spinach bolted last week, just as I was about to start picking leaves 🙄😑
Thats a shame but it is fast growing so maybe try more and pick baby leaves
Thank you Shaun

Could be lack of Pollination...been having the same issue with mine
Take the sowing one step at a time steady way Gardening is fun
Thank you Frances
aprox how many pea pods usually come from one bush/vine?
It varies depending on planting time variety and weather Thank you
