- This is a satirical English ballad written in the 1640's to protest the laws of the Commonwealth of England under Oliver Cromwell.
The Commonwealth was famous for banning Christmas because they believed it to be a pagan tradition and too Catholic.
This shares the same tune as 'When the king enjoys his own again'.
Performed by 'Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band'.
Movie: Cromwell (1970)
God save old Charlie
One of the best songs of the perioid
Aye, it's a great tune
It is said this was played during the British surrender at Yorktown which did end the American revolutionary war and the ideas of that nation ultimately did turn the world upside down
Haya mate, have you moticed a ratehr large uptick in Jacobite support in the recent years? I've especially seen in Ireland and England
I haven't noticed anything at all. I really hope Jacobitism grows though
@@Hibernica1641 aye indeed, the biggest problem is that there's no sort of organisation of the cause apart from the royal Stuart society(who do nothing)
Me and quite a few people have been thinking of making a organisation, mainly around northern England, the pale, Virginia, the west country, and glenmorgan
@wilftodd3696 well I'm a Jacobite but content with future King William V being of Stuart blood through Diana. Not too fussed about a German noble at this point
In the end he did not get what he wanted.
if you ask me that is a good thing.
St Charles The Martyr. I am a Cavalier but not sure about making him a Saint..
Yeah, I think making him a Saint was rather odd
@@Hibernica1641 yeah it doesn't come across quite right for some reason
