The skin color of Salamanders was already solved. The vast majority of Nocturneans have strongly melanated skin, but with the marine creation process this darkness takes it to a new level. There are codices and official models painted by GW staff painters showing Salamanders skin being anything from light charcoal, to vanta black, but ultimately everything on a gray to black scale. GW even taught people to paint the skin in grayscale in their tutorials.
All people on Nocturneans are black due to the suns radiation (as in real life). There can also be non-ethnically black salamanders, like Sa’kan too though.
23:41 Now we have Pariah Nexus on WH+. The Salamander there (Sa'kan) has asian facial structurw but with a dark grey skin tone. So canonically they are monochromatic but only the darker shades (dark grey to vanta black).
Personally, I have always seen them as Black/Grey, like the actually color, in the artwork I have come across. I was always under the impression it was chosen to sorta relate them to ashes because they are from a volcanic world and are all about the whole fire thing. But I could see how they could also be viewed as just really dark brown skinned. Either way w/ Henry Cavill supposedly heading up a live action 40k series for Amazon, we may get to see if Isyander's theory is correct very soon.
This is true but I have to imagine that the reason why so many of them look the way they do has to be because of some level of warp influence as well as the possibility of intended genetic modification upon colonization like 30,000 years back. Which would also kind of explain why the salamander successor chapters seem to just keep mutating like those ones with the bones in their wrists similar to Wolverine's claws in X-Men without the adamantium metal. They're not mutated really overall, but it's just that little bit that makes them sort of unnatural compared to most of the humans with the red glowing eyes and all. Considering that humans that have lived on other planets like Nocturne have never been naturally or even the possibility of genetically modded adaptation like how it's believed that even regular people on Fenris already have a little bit of wolf DNA bonded to them when they colonize that planet. As well as the massive direwolf like canines that they have there being modified to survive on that planet. Although for the salamanders the dragon-like beasts that they hunt down as part of their training to be accepted into the legion and get their name from, might be naturally from Nocturne.
So one of the traits I love about the Salamanders is their ingenuity. They have a knack for figuring things out, especially technology. They had to flex this trait hard in their assault on the Tempest Galleries. Faced with dark age automata, they broke down what machines they could get their hands on and repurposed it into weapons that could hurt the machines they had to fight. They even reconfigured the machines they were fighting against to be redirected as brutal attack machines to send back at their mechanical foes. Although afaik it's been retconned to be something that every chapter does, they would name their vehicles and treat them like another honored battle-brother, giving them commendations and honors after battles. Also wanna point out that, originally, their preference for flame and melta weaponry wasn't exactly by choice. Before the primarch, they used these short ranged high power weapons because they were the best tools for the jobs they were given. Having had their numbers decimated at the Tempest Galleries, they took a more backseat role in the Great Crusade. Think quelling uprisings in cities, security detail, escort missions, and culling Ork infestations on already conquered worlds. Most of these jobs involved short ranged fire fights, so it made no sense to bring a lascannon when a Multi-melta would do the job better since range was not an issue. This is why it kinda grinds my gears when people immediately attribute them to flame and melta since, at least at first, it wasn't so much their preference as much as just being what made sense at the time. This was testament to another defining quality of theirs, their pragmatism. Obviously with their recruitment only coming from Nocturne post primarch it absolutely became their preference, but it just annoys me that people ignore all of the other great qualities of the Salamanders and just jump straight to "FIRE YAY!!!!" when they are so much more than that. Also fun fact, the Techmarines of the Salamanders are such proud artisans that they tend to have their armor colors inverted: where techmarines of other chapters are mostly Mechanicus red with one shoulder showing their chapter colors the Salamanders wear the chapter colors all over with one Mechanicus red shoulder. The Mechanicus of Mars highly values Salamander wrought tech and will actively attempt to trade for it. I watched this vid so long ago but couldn't respond at the time, then I kept forgetting to lol

The Salamanders are honestly my favorite because they’re one of the most unique factions in 40K. They have a completely original culture, motif, and perspective on human life that makes them among the greatest.

I had to flip a coin for this because ultramarines and iron warriors are my 2 favorite space marines legions and i couldn't decide. It leaded on heads so I vote for the iron warriors.
Dark skinned Space Marines are absolutely fine, and GW should paint more brown faces in the chapter books to make that clear, but I think the books also pretty clearly described the Salamanders as UNNATURALLY black. Like really dark grey. You paint them however you want, I'm just not entirely sure how the lore supports it.

You guys are constantly joking around and acting like good friends but you’re trying to keep the topic. When you guys go on a tangent it’s absolutely hilarious and also interesting.
The Salamanders are perhaps my favorite chapter because they remember WHY they serve, not just how to serve. The empire is nothing without its citizens, and too many chapters, and especially the inquisition, seem to have forgotten that. The Salamanders have not.
Your passion and thoroughness in your explanation is amazing. I'm just getting introduced to Warhammer and to Space Marines and you are one of the my first steps into trying to learn the lore.
I’ve gotta go with the blood angels on this one. 10th edition has been adding a lot to the angry blueberries, and I feel that the battle of Baal would be a fun thing to talk about.
I did something similar to what he described at 29 minutes in. Me and a few mates decided to fix a bit of wooden playground equipment at a campsite near where I live and we carved each of our names into the wood as well as the date we did the repair
I remember reading somewhere in one of the books that the Salamanders have their skin tone the same as it was before the augmentations, but when they get exposed to the light/atmosphere on Nocturne it turns their skin into a very deep black like Vulcan's and the other Nocturne natives.
Man this is legit the 5th video ive watched of yours today i found you both a while ago and have just been watching shorts but man these provide much needed details keep it up both u guys
I thought he was going to talk about the fact that the Salamanders come from a world where it has very little sunlight. Let that sink in, they live on a planet called Nocturn, because of the very little sunlight that comes through all the ash clouds from the volcanos. Apparently, a nonspecific radiation mixed with Vulcans gene-seed causes them to have pitch black skin. Which in layman terms means the writer had no idea how melanin actually works, but it was too late to fix it and a retcon was not on the table for some reason. Although it did bring the thought that instead the Salamanders all looked like the Raven Guard and Volcan looked like Corvus, which is hilarious to think that the friendliest people in the 40k are a bunch of albino emos. In a way its more terrifying to see a massive vampire looking man coming towards you than the guy who looks like he baths in flamethrowers. The confusion increases, when you see some of official art showing Salamander's with ash grey skin, which is fitting considering they come from a planet of ash.
If there's high levels of radiation. Like enough to corrupt the gene seed, it doesn't matter if there's little sunlight or not. Being black is a genuine adaptation to radiation not just sunlight.
I painted my Salamander skin with army painter Necromancer Cloak followed by a wash of Strong Tone which gives the skin a charcoal-like look which I feel ties in the with love of fire & forging.

Bob Ross was a Military Training Instructor in Air Force. One of the officers in my squadron actually went through BMT with him the TI. They do a lot of yelling in basic, so it's understandable.
Honestly, to counter your point @ 23:52 , I would simply cast actors with higher accounts of melanin *and* have some of them, for the older Salamanders, do some touching up more towards the onyx level, along with show casing redder and redder eyes for the older Astartes as well.
I thought Salamander's skin color was already solved and confirmed. Like their not African American black but burned black as in their skin was covered in charcoal... I mean I prefer they all look like Terry crews but that's just because I want to be a salamander. 😏
While today I stand for the Iron Warriors I do have a message for my fellow followers. Brothers, sister, those in-between, if the Ultramarines fail this challenge just remember the work our great host has done for every faction. When he speaks of a faction he speaks with nothing but kindness. He is the government mandated hype man. He deserves to talk about his big blue boys. (Also I'm from Oregon, I'd love to hear you talk about that time we blasted a whale with TNT)
I always imagined, based on verbal descriptions of Vulcan, that he was more like Darkseid. Massive, dark ash grey, with glowing red eyes. Hell some of the animated versions of Darkseid have his armor looking similar to a space marines anyways.
Gotta love isyander's rant on architecture, i wish we had more murals and graffiti, it makes it much more colorful and it adds that missing human touch
iirc the optimise the fun out of the game was said by the firaxis xcom devs. idk if they were the original ones to quote it however. Also as a londoner, city of London is the one that was set up by the romans, which expanded into greater London. Glad to see the salamanders as they're my favourites, keep up the great work!
The mention of craftsmen and architects signing their work reminds me of my grandfather. He was a master carpenter and was well known for doing really good work. One time he and his team were doing some restoriation work on an old building, it was buildt so well even my grandfather thougt it was almost ridicilous ( his words ). Turned out he found his own grandfathers signature😂

As an alaskan fan you absolutely do need to visit the great white north, if you aren't a fan of cold stay in the lower end, there's a town called ketchikan that is really pleasant to visit during the summer months
I LOVE the Salamanders lore so much but the chapter I find most attracted to model wise and playstyle wise has always been the Dark Angels, i just love the plasma and bike combat too cool. Have been agonizing on which one to make my homebrews gene seed for ages... Love both of their lore (I find myself reading/listening to more salamanders stuff) but the whole hiding past groups of traitors is also very very cool. Ah how difficult it is to be indecisive.
In the books it has been heavily heavily employed that is the vanta black. I would love to see them cast black actors as salamanders with the vanta black overlay with flashbacks of them as scouts with white face like the Wayans did in 'White Chicks'.
23:00... I can't wait to see if your "crackpot theory" is so crackpot afterall. That's my less than a second's worth of thought on the matter. Great stuff, guys. Keep it up🔥
Isander: the Salamanders legion followed the words of their Primarch such as protecting the weak and being courageous. Koda: Never back down, never give up
Can you guys cover some of your favorite homebrew chapters, or maybe even some of your own homebrew? Honestly, the part I love most about this hobby is the custom stuff people make, and I'd like to have some light shined on that.
Brazilian here. Can confirm, we have a much larger population than Portugal, therefore we have more portuguese speakers than the nation where the language originated in. We were also the capital of the Portuguese Empire for a while. We went from beign a south-american colony to capital of a european monarchy, then we turned into a south-american empire right after, followed by a pseudo-democracy that was really an oligarchy, followed by several consecutive republics and dictatorships. The US orchestrated one of the military coups back in the 60s. A lot of people were tortured and killed over the course of three decades.
I always like the really dark grey skin of the Salamanders, along with their red glowing eyes. The image is always walking nightmare fuel helping a little girl find her teddy bear. More natural skin certainly would be a better fit for a tv show, but at that point they're just some nice dude in power armour.
I'd love to have recaps on stories that Warhammer produces theres so many stories not related to the space marines and just focus on the day to day like of a guards man. However I'd love a take on the legion of the dammed. The story where the Inquisition capturing one was great.
Honestly, my headcanon is that they're a good charcoal black just becasue the UV interacting with their geneseed and causing that kind of weird hyper melanism is more of an interesting quirk. It's exactly the kind of weird shit you expect from Space Marine geneseed fuckups. And of course, a 9 foot tall, pitch black giant with glowing red eyes looking like a demon straight out of hell being the MF who would tear his way through hordes of orks to save a little girls teddybear is very on brand for the Salamanders.
Find it really cool that the first episode that I watched from you guys is the salamanders, army that I paint and love to play with, and there is brazil references? Amazing 10/10 Also fun fact, brazilian campaign during WW2 is something else, we where almost forced to join because of the USA influence here and also germany and italy shot down some brazilian ship, so brazil sent a small force that outperformed like crazy!
I love the Salamanders. Martyrdom and self-sacrifice interest me(in fiction, FBI. In fiction) greatly and having a whole chapter that's like: "the fire inside burned brighter than the fire around me" is great!
Yoooooo! I started hearing your podcasts since you appeared in my "for you" page in here. Let me say that I've been truly enjoying so much the warhammer lore videos, specially when I'm playing hours and hours of minecraft :D And to represent my little jar of dirt, I'm from Argentina! And in my personal opinion, I have 3 space marine chapters in my heart: Dark Angels Black Templars (Because of Sigismund's Chad energy) And the Carcharodons, because they scare the absolute brakes out of me :D I'm listening to the podcast from the oldest to the newest on Spotify, so I have time to catch up :)

I need my hot vampire daddies to get an episode 😩
I found you guys on TH-cam shorts and fell in love with you guys do to your sense of humor and your experience and your excitement about 40 K. you guys met Union and Alaska always brings a smile to my face cause I live here. I love the fact that you talk about skin color and I’m thinking about it. Some native Americans have a temptation for tanning so they can survive the sun when it’s out specially the south of the United States. They don’t get skin cancer because of that dictation. I absolutely enjoy your contact he has are making me laugh with Koda is one of the comments at first until laughter. You guys are constantly joking around and acting like good friends but you’re trying to keep the topic. When you guys go on a tangent it’s absolutely hilarious and also interesting.
Great to see another episode. Have to show my support for the Blood Angels.
The Salamanders are perhaps my favorite chapter because they remember WHY they serve, not just how to serve. The empire is nothing without its citizens, and too many chapters, and especially the inquisition, seem to have forgotten that. The Salamanders have not.
My vote is for Bood Angels.
'For the Emperor and Sanguinius'
As vulkan said "the flesh is weak, but deeds endure"
I remember reading somewhere in one of the books that the Salamanders have their skin tone the same as it was before the augmentations, but when they get exposed to the light/atmosphere on Nocturne it turns their skin into a very deep black like Vulcan's and the other Nocturne natives.
I wanna see what you guys do with the blood angels. Top teir podcast.
FOR SANGUINIUS, BY THE GREAT ANGEL BLOOD ANGELS SHALL TRIUMPH
I feel so bad not being able to afford the patreon with the quality of the work here. Hopefully next paycheck i got yall!
I love listening to your podcast cause i can feel the passion in you whenever you talk about warhammer. Kudos to both of you
Blood angels, Blood for the god emperor! Skulls for... tech... I guess?
I painted my Salamander skin with army painter Necromancer Cloak followed by a wash of Strong Tone which gives the skin a charcoal-like look which I feel ties in the with love of fire & forging.
Roboute Guilliman needs YOU to vote for ultramarines as the codex dictates. And I’ll say they’ve got my vote.
You're not ready for Perturabo to siege the blue boys
Roboute beancounter can wait his turn
@@Bear-bx7yoyou traitors will never win, we have plot armour and a primarch that doesn’t hate us.
NEVER!
Prm. Guilliman cannot come to the poll right now - he has just been saddled with untangling the Gordian Knot that is 500yrs of Terchorea's back tax forms. Please hold, and may the Emperor protect.
Former Prm. PerturbedBro79 cannot come to the poll right now - he is digging holes.
When you mentioned the armoring cinematic, I had to watch it. It's so good.
I'll vote blood angels but I would love to see the night lords though
Thank u guys for lore videos that are easily digestible as a new 40k fan
I'd like to see blood angels, specifically dante
They did one on Dante on Patreon
What an excellent perspective and insight on the life of a Space Marine.
Here to show support for the Blood Angels
Guys, I love your podcast and as much as I want to say “make more vids! their so awesome! ” I can tell it takes a lot to make them and research and noting knowledge you already have and well, just setting up and time. Good job! I’m new to 40k and this is cool and coincidental to me. I’m all for it 💪🏽
If I remember right his position was a First sergeant which means his whole job was keeping them all in line
Bob Ross was a Military Training Instructor in Air Force. One of the officers in my squadron actually went through BMT with him the TI.
They do a lot of yelling in basic, so it's understandable.
BLOOD ANGELS DAMN IT
Honestly, to counter your point @ 23:52 , I would simply cast actors with higher accounts of melanin *and* have some of them, for the older Salamanders, do some touching up more towards the onyx level, along with show casing redder and redder eyes for the older Astartes as well.
I thought Salamander's skin color was already solved and confirmed. Like their not African American black but burned black as in their skin was covered in charcoal... I mean I prefer they all look like Terry crews but that's just because I want to be a salamander. 😏
I always imagined Vulcan looking like Michael Clarke Duncan. It was his smile that sold it for me. May he rest in peace.
The Blood Angels
While today I stand for the Iron Warriors I do have a message for my fellow followers. Brothers, sister, those in-between, if the Ultramarines fail this challenge just remember the work our great host has done for every faction. When he speaks of a faction he speaks with nothing but kindness. He is the government mandated hype man. He deserves to talk about his big blue boys.
(Also I'm from Oregon, I'd love to hear you talk about that time we blasted a whale with TNT)
Let give the blood angels love ❤
We back baby!!!! Holy shit I've been looking forward for this every hour of this week!
If the Iron warriors knew how many of them are named Alpharius...
I always imagined, based on verbal descriptions of Vulcan, that he was more like Darkseid. Massive, dark ash grey, with glowing red eyes. Hell some of the animated versions of Darkseid have his armor looking similar to a space marines anyways.
That being said please do the blood angels
Gotta love isyander's rant on architecture, i wish we had more murals and graffiti, it makes it much more colorful and it adds that missing human touch
blood angels all the way ultra marines will need like 5 eps minimum so fuck that, my sexy hawk boy reigns supreme
Blood Angels please!
Love the Futurama references, nice to see someone else is enjoying the new season
iirc the optimise the fun out of the game was said by the firaxis xcom devs. idk if they were the original ones to quote it however.
Also as a londoner, city of London is the one that was set up by the romans, which expanded into greater London.
Glad to see the salamanders as they're my favourites, keep up the great work!
I'll vote blood angels
The mention of craftsmen and architects signing their work reminds me of my grandfather. He was a master carpenter and was well known for doing really good work. One time he and his team were doing some restoriation work on an old building, it was buildt so well even my grandfather thougt it was almost ridicilous ( his words ). Turned out he found his own grandfathers signature😂
I really wanna hear more about the 3rd legion and Fulgrim
Them eating and knowing the chemical make up is a fundamental Bene Gesserit skill, Koda
I voted for blood angels but i still want to see a custodes in the future
I mean, I gotta go with Blood Angels. I always wanna know more.
Also I wanna thank you for these videos. I've always kinda loved 40k, but your excitement and knowledge has pulled me even deeper.
Rofl the Mr Rogers/Bob Ross argument is fucking beautiful.
Bob was a Drill Sergeant ( the guys whose job it is to scream at you, to help teach you how to work under stress/pressure, and do it well.)
As an alaskan fan you absolutely do need to visit the great white north, if you aren't a fan of cold stay in the lower end, there's a town called ketchikan that is really pleasant to visit during the summer months
Begging for Blood Angels, my grandad Dante needs his flowers!
Blood angels my man Dante just wants to take a nap
Amazing 10/10
Also fun fact, brazilian campaign during WW2 is something else, we where almost forced to join because of the USA influence here and also germany and italy shot down some brazilian ship, so brazil sent a small force that outperformed like crazy!
Let me say that I've been truly enjoying so much the warhammer lore videos, specially when I'm playing hours and hours of minecraft :D
And to represent my little jar of dirt, I'm from Argentina!
And in my personal opinion, I have 3 space marine chapters in my heart:
Dark Angels
Black Templars (Because of Sigismund's Chad energy)
And the Carcharodons, because they scare the absolute brakes out of me :D
I'm listening to the podcast from the oldest to the newest on Spotify, so I have time to catch up :)
All I've been doing is rewatching your videos I'm most likely gonna be subscribing to your patreon soon lol
Blood Angels for the next one! Then Eldar please!!
"Jezza" I love this series more and more every day.
He'd be a hard get, but Lawrence Fishburne would be an awesome Vulkan. In fact I always imagine Morpheus' voice everytime I read Vulkan saying something.
23:00 Amazing
On the topic of invasive surgeries, about 20,000 surgeries are done a year where they forget to administer anesthetics after the paralyzing agent.
