We didn't just have musicians, we truly had artists. No computers, no auto tune, just pure talent with a message. The lyrics are so often just kinda allowed to just wash over people who don't take any time to truly LISTEN to what they are saying. I admit to having done it some myself when I was a teen, but I started coming around in early 20s. I miss those much simpler times
Young folks can't even begin to comprehend the socialization norms of those times. No internet. No mobile phones. You meet up with folks of all types at popular gathering places. Face to face. You inherently trust them because kindness was the norm, not the exception. You follow them to their apartment. You rifle through the stacks of record albums that they have resting on the floor, leaned against the wall. Rows and rows of them. You quickly dismiss the ones you already own, searching for the interesting ones you haven't heard yet. You pluck two or three out and set them by the turntable. The bong is brought out. The room becomes hazy. You get lost into music that you are hearing for the first time. It becomes a spiritual shared experience. You write down a couple of album titles that you want to add to your personal collection. You add the name and number of the new friend that you have just made. You will ultimately recall people by the music that you first shared. The forementioned sequence WAS COMMON.
A life without anonymity, without hiding behind a keyboard, means a life where reputation is EVERYTHING. The wrong perceptions equal lost social opportunities. Conversely, if you condition yourself to anonymous cynicism, it can't help but to eventually reveal itself in direct encounters.
Back then, I didn't know any lonely, bitter people. I'm sure they existed. I just didn't know any.
@@proudliberal605 You are quite correct. I did that exact scenario more than once. At no time did I have a bad experience or "get jumped". The idea never even crossed my mind. Times have changed my friend and not for the better
@@proudliberal605 That is how we discovered bands that were not getting air play for whatever reason. Too old, too new, Songs too long, or not not the right genre. I discovered The Fabulous thunderbirds, Bob Marley, The Funkadelics, and Kansas among others. Getting stoned sifting through stacks of vinyl in relative stranger's homes.
@@franscott3122 It is why music is so extremely important to our generation. Our culture was centered around it. Our socialization was dependent upon it.
Rock n Roll on vinyl had the equivalent cultural impact of the mobile social media device of today. Imagine a modern teenager without their mobile device. That is the equivalent level of social dependency that Rock n Roll on vinyl possessed. Jay and Amber might occasionally wonder why a music reaction channel can harbor nearly a half million subscribers. It is entirely because they have tapped into the relatively extinct social networking of boomers. Our social interaction was watching "in person" music reactions. You can read the discussions in the comments section, and they sound similar to our conversations way back when. Favorite guitarist, best drummer, favorite album, "You gotta hear this one", child prodigies, "I used to know the drummer for....", etc, etc. It was real a social achievement to "turn someone on" to a band they had not heard before. We are doing this with Jay and Amber. We are vicariously reliving our young adult life through their reactions.
They cannot begin to imagine the significance of this.
Totally agree with you Tony! Life was so much better then! People were nicer, the music was fantastic. Everyone seemed to get along otherwise you ignored the other ones. No isolation since there were no cell phones, internet. You just went out and made friends with experiences in life.
It's funny. I'm a big BTO fan from way back & like everyone, I loved their rocking guitar driven upbeat stuff. But Blue Collar was SO different from their normal style...I absolutely loved it then...and even more now.
The only thing close to it was the album "Head On" and the single "Lookin' Out for # 1."
Randy has a strong jazz background.

To me this is jazz with an interurban bluesy undertone. I picture myself in the middle of the night, looking out through my balcony door at the distant city lights, feeling those sultry avant garde vibes wash over my soul like a wave.

Randy B learned his craft at the foot of the great Lenny Breau in Winnipeg, for me the bluesy jazz style of his work on this track seems to be a tip of the cap to his mentor. Imagine seeing Randy B & Neil Young hanging together watching Lenny Breau at a small club in a small city in the middle of the country. What a time the 60s must’ve been

Not Fragile is one of my favorite BTO songs, great bassline, awesome guitars, Turners voice and Robbie's drums driving the song. That whole album is gold, from the title song Not Fragile to the last one, Giving it all away, which is unexpected the first time you hear it.
Not Fragile is one of my favorite album covers, too. Love the "NOT FRAGILE" stenciled on the wooden crate overflowing with massive gears!

I was just struck how much this 1973 song seems inspired by Funkadelic's 1971 Maggot Brain. Now that's a song we need a reaction to: 'Maggot Brain' by Funkadelic. Its psychedelic funk is incredible!
Can You Get to That is a single off of the album Maggot Brain that must be reacted to.

LOVE THIS SONG!!! Randy shows off his skills as an all around guitarist, adding some jazz flavor! This is a VERY relatable song about the everyday person! When it first hit, I was all about it!
You ain't seen nothing yet and Takin care of business are two of their biggest hits. Randy Bachman is one of my favorite guitarist of all time. They have a concert from the Roseland Ballroom when they are older that has many of their hits played live.

Randy Bachman was the original guitar player for The Guess Who, (probably Canada's first big Rock Band). He co-wrote the hit song, "American Woman". I saw BTO at their height of their popularity, in 1975. What a concert.

I love BTO I think their biggest commercial hit was “Taking Care of Business” but also loved “Four Wheel Drive”, “ Let it Ride” and “Hey You”.
"Hey You" was basically Randy Bachman's UP YOURS message to Burton Cummings.

Love me some BTO!!! Going to see Randy in August in Niagara. Saw him tour with Burton Cummings years ago, they did BTO, Guess Who and Burton's songs all in one. Amazing. Robbie on drums passed recently, he was too underrated. Thanks guys.

Within a period of a few years, Winnipeg produced Neil Young, Randy Bachman & Burton Cummings….Each of those guys has recorded an enormous amount of great music both within groups and as a solo artist
Before leaving for Vancouver, Terry Jacks was there for the nascent Winnipeg scene. Joey Gregorash was there, Lenny Breau during this time moved there. Most of the Guess Who replacements were from Winnipeg bands (Kurt Winter, Greg Leskiw, Donnie McDougall, Bill Wallace). Not to forget Fred Turner and Chad Allan who were there. Famed child entertainer Fred Penner was on the scene then. Maybe growing up they were influenced by the fame of the greatest Canadian entertainer of all time Gisele MacKenzie and realized if she could do it so could they.
I'm a Pegger through and through, and yes, we have had some amazing talent come from here for sure !!

She could sing with perfect pitch, could play near concert level piano and violin, she could act, dance and did comedy with one of the greats, Jack Benny. People talk of a triple threat, she was a quintuple threat. Canada has never seen a more widely talented performer. Luckily, for being mostly prominent during the live age of TV there are enough kinescopes out there to prove the point. Two of my faves are Hong Kong Suit with Jack Benny and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue with Roger Williams
@@Piercing54 I should mention she also incorporated her hometown into a lot of routines she did. There is one with Robert Clary and one with Perry Como that immediately come to mind. She was a great ambassador for Winnipeg.
BTO was more than just their hits, which everyone knew! Two more you need to hear... one like this song shows the jazzy side of the band... try "Lookin'Out For #1" (I actually think it's even better!) and then try "Rock Is My Life, And This Is My Song"! Killer! A couple lesser known gems from their last album before the first breakup, "Freeways", are "Shotgun Rider" and "My Wheels Won't Turn"....Randy at his best vocally and just cool songs!
Another Canadian band that you should check out is April Wine. They were churning out hits around the same time as BTO and still tour today.

April Wine is great. Did you know that the french translation of April Wine lands as...Avril Le Vin? Avril Lavigne! I wince every time I hear her songs, but love April Wine! lol
They've already reacted to "Roller" and "I Like to Rock" by April Wine. I'd like to see them do "Just Between You and Me".

If you like BTO you might also like another Canadian band, Trooper.
They had hits such as the upbeat and light "We're Here For A Good Time", the soft ballads like "Oh Pretty Lady", and rockers like "Boys In The Bright White Sports Car" and "Raise A Little Hell".

An unexpected treat when I turned on the computer this morning. I suggested this one the last time you listened to BTO and figured there would be so many more requests for their big hits. Glad to see you heard a different side to the band. The last section is simply jazz. Looking Out For #1 is another mellow one. Let It Ride and Hey You are two more great ones to check out.
They have many great songs in there repertoire, but you should try "Let it Ride" next!

Nice way to start the morning with my hometown boys from Winnipeg, Canada. Lenny Breau who was Canada's premiere jazz guitarist lived on the same street and the two became friends and Lenny was a huge influence.
Locking out for number one has the same jazzy vibe while Not Fragile with Fred Turner on vocals will rock your socks off!
I agree - BTO's "Lookin' Out For #1" is another great song with a Jazz vibe. Must react to the Album version. The single version cuts out big chunk of the song. 🎸😎

Oh man! I had completely forgotten about this song. It was one of my absolute favorites BTO songs. Very much a jazz influence. In the echoey section of the middle guitar solo I love the effect created by making the original note quiet and in one ear and then the first echo very prominent and in the opposite ear and the second echo back in the first ear and quieter again. The jazz breakdown at the end brings me back to my childhood where my parents would bring me to jazz parties with about 30 jazz musicians and there would be jams and sit ins of amazing jazz and blues songs all night.

On another note, please get back to some classic Chicago with the song "Introduction". It's the first song from the first Chicago album and you will go crazy about it.

This is a GREAT song by BTO! Didn't get a lot of commercial air time. First time I heard it was on album rock FM. You have jazz. Blues and rock in one song! Super diverse band! Come back with Four Wheel Drive, you'll love it!

I used to work night shift at a machine shop back in the 80s and this was our unofficial song. I almost miss those days just for that.

Glad you appreciated it so much, think I mentioned it in the comments of every other BTO reaction! This song feels make one feel special when working that graveyard shift. (side story: I was crushed when the sign on the recycle box at my job that said "Graveyard Rejects" was changed to "Overnight Mistakes". How dull.)
When you said it sounded bluesy I thought, "Feels more Jazzy to me, with a little Santana vibe" then reconsidered, "Blues like Texas Blues has Flamenco and Jazz/Swing influences"
For some Texas Blues other than ZZ Top or Stevie Ray Vaughn; I recommend Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, "I've Got My Mojo Workin'".

Randy Bachman (guitar) is considered the star of the band, having starred in The Guess Who before this, but this track really showcases bass player Fred Turner, who wrote and sang it. The drums are by Robbie Bachman, Randy's brother.
Obvious choices: "Let It Ride" and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet."
I also note that this song is 50 years old, released in 1973, and I say hit the forgotten classics from that year, in honor of that anniversary. Like the pre-Stevie Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac. then led by Christine McVie and Bob Welch. Try "Why" or "Hypnotized".
Bob Seger is determined to pretend he started his career in 75, but that's a fib. I think he was better BEFORE the Silver Bullet Band. For 1973 Bob, we can start with the beautiful "I've Got Time".
And let's close with a song I've requested several times before, also marking its 50th anniversary: "The Grove of Eglantine" by Styx.

My fave memory of this cool classic when it came out is cruising the streets of Detroit near 7 Mile & Gratiot where we lived for a few months, in the quiet wee hours stoned out of our gourds. Always had to crank this song when it came on. Still my fave BTO song to this day. I used to tweet the lyrics & vid out. Months ago I searched your play list to see if you'd covered it yet, so I was delighted to see the notification for it finally.
More BTO: "Let It Ride" "Hey You" "Four Wheel Drive" and of course "Takin' Care of Business"; Another Canadian band you still need to check out is Lighthouse, which was essentially the Canadian version of Chicago, with songs like "One Fine Morning" and 'Pretty Lady"
Coming in at #1 on my all time BTO song list. My absolute favorite. The Blues/jazz mix vibes are out of this world coupled with perfect "WAH" pedal makes this my #1.
At age 13, in his hometown of Winnipeg, Randy met one of the biggest musical influences of his life, fellow teenager and brilliant jazz guitarist Lenny Breau. Following this enriching formative period, Randy saw Elvis on TV and was bitten by the rock and roll bug.

I heard this song way back in grade school, little did I know that I would be a blue collar worker for my entire life. At almost 62 years of age, this song really is the story of my life. I still wake up at 3:30 every morning to go to work at construction sites. I seldom miss the sun rising out of the darkness and I am thankful to enjoy the Blue Collar life!

If you have not reviewed yet, 2 songs by BTO that you would love are Not Fragile and Sledgehammer, both are total rockers!!
My favorite song from when music was new. Finding this song amongst the driving rock of BTO made it a stand-out, even to ten year old me.
Randy Bachman is a very underrated guitarist. Fred Turner a very underrated vocalist.

First song of theirs, I ever heard. When it was new! I may have been working Swing or graveyard at the last Dennys on I-5 North, a few yards away from British Columbia.

I saw BTO back in the day. What an awesome show that was. I have always enjoyed their music.
As a person who grew up in Vancouver , Canada which is where BTO made their mark in the 1970's, there were so many good acts soon to follow. Bryan Adams, Loverboy plus many great local talents. The one talent I believe that Jay would love to hear is Gerry Doucette an incredible songwriter, guitarist who's song "Mama Let Him Play" is a Canadian all time classic hit. Love Blue Collar, their song, "Looking Out for Number One" has a similar feeling.
Actually remember Doucette too. Also grew up in Vancouver...👍🎤🎸🇨🇦
I loved these guys because they were not typical pretty boys the looked like regular men they could have been a brother or just the dudes who lived in your town and talented way beyond that Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman need I say more the music stands the test of time.
Thank you guys for diving into more Canadian artists, and there are many more amazing Canadian acts that you have yet to discover, such as The Barenaked Ladies - One Week, or bluesman Colin James - I Just Came Back (To Say Goodbye), Blue Rodeo - It Hasn't Hit Me Yet, and I can't leave out Nickelback - Burn It To The Ground. Just saw Nivkelback in Montreal a couple of weeks back, and they still put on amazing show with an amazing setlist. If they swing by your part of the States, they are certainly worth going to see.....

One of their best and least known and appreciated. Absolutely phenomenal blues song that's been in my playlists for years. So glad you discovered it.

The jazz influence of Bachman's playing comes from the fact that he studied with Lenny Breau, a great Canadian/American innovative guitarist who was fluent in numerous styles of music. For the longest time, because of the jazzy guitar-driven flavor of this song I thought that Turner was singing, "blue guitar" rather than "blue collar". Just listening to this makes me wish that Bachman and Burton Cummings had collaborated on a strictly jazz-rock album.
This song is very much the flavor of the 'Guess Who' back in the day when Randy Bachman was with Burton Cummings.
