Add the comparison of the bootleg and the final product to the pile of irrefutable evidence that overproduction and crush are holding Weezer back. But please don't get me wrong, I loved both versions!
yeah, as it turns out, they did this to see a crowd's reaction to the current state of the album which was leaning heavily into orchestral instrumentation much like OK Human, they said after the visual feedback they went back and changed the album to still feature lots of orchestral work but more of that famous blue album crunch, I like how it turned out, but this feels even more wintery than the final product.
@@tyrraria597 I do not claim to be a music expert, but when I say overproduction, I am merely referring to the added effects, the sort of synthetic guitars and other sounds that are added in post. I hope you understand what I mean.
@@Conorize that’s fair, sometimes I think they should just record a separate version of each song for deluxe editions with no changes, they always knock live shows out of the park so I don’t see why not
I wish they kept that little solo for iambic, and apart of me likes the changes for dreamless sleep like hownit ends but I wish he kept the lyrics and first part of the songs tone the same as the live performance like more somber then he could have had the buildup, either way both are great tho!
I really liked the studio version. It does suffer from overproduction but I think the song writing is the strongest from all the EPs and the updates benefits some songs. I prefer basketball in the studio version more than here for example.

Full album is out now. It’s… different than this. Sounds like winter wasn’t quite complete when they made this and did the kimmel performance. Sounds a little blue but… definitely over produced at times. Basketball only has one oo alley oop and the strumming is different… 🤷♂️
@@snispy It's basically how many beats they play in a measure of seconds. Holiday, December, LA Girlz are 6/8. No Other One, I Swear It's True, Death and Destruction, Blue Like Jazz are 3/4. Cleopatra uses 5/4 for the chorus (That's why it feels like it starts late). You can watch this video to check for yourself these time signatures if you're interested enough. Everynow and then weezer comes out with a different time signature, but it seems like they'll be especially prominent for Winter. th-cam.com/video/P45jlDNTf5Q/w-d-xo.html
@@TheRoloHDGamesAndFails Technically yea, 6/8 is just 3/4 but doubled, but that's just when counting the notes. sonically they sound very apart. 3/4 is a simple meter while 6/8 is a compound meter. they have other quirks like where the accents are played and the number of beats. if u notice, 3/4 sounds like an average 4/4 time but without the last 4, and 6/8 sounds almost swing-ish
This sounds so much better than all the other SZNZ, I hope they don't fuck it up in production. Summer and Autumn sounded like they were recorded on an IPhone, Autumn especially.

I think person who did the mastering makes the EP sounds overproducing (as many people said?). Because Suzy Shinn said they were really trying to recreate the Blue tone.. she's even asked Chris Shaw, who engineered and mixed the Blue Album.
the main problem i have with winter is the track order i like the track order far better then the studio release. also this sheraton commander is better then the studio version
Weezer threw out a teaser of I am a dogs studio version. I personally think it’s better. There’s more harmony. Vocal line is a bit different with more falsetto. I enjoy this but it seems like these versions are just in their youth with little vocal harmonies (and yes. It needs it. Vocal harmonies are awesome.)
It does feel like it could be the closer, I think the way it goes so bombastic towards the end is they might push that as the single? Either that one or I want a dog both have single potential. I think the full studio version of the deep and dreamless sleep will sound much better as a closer overall or i hope it will!
@@snispy I really could see I Want a Dog as the single for Winter, but the structure of Pentameter is what's making me wonder if it's the ending or not, because it feels similar to Run, Raven, Run in terms of structure (long song, reuse of a demo for a bridge, etc) and Rivers even sings "Seasons come and seasons go" near the end, which kinda gives it a sense of finality to the whole arc. Doesn't really give me a single vibe, if you know what I mean. Either way I'm excited to see the studio version as well!
@@SoniKast yeah with a few workarounds I can see iambic Pentameter as the closer especially cause it'd be nice to have it go full circle kinda sounding spring like at the end or more upbeat
@@snispy Also, it works full circle when it comes to the title and theme. 1st track off Spring is "Opening Night". If "Iambic Pentameter" is the last song on Winter, SZNZ starts and ends with Shakespeare references

@@geraldgreg5370 Dark Enough to See The Stars is one of my favorites too idk how I forgot it! ;-; honestly I don't really feel like there's filler on this EP which I love! and yeah I agree about The Deep And Dreamless Sleep needing a bit of a spruce up to make it the closer SZNZ winter and SZNZ as a whole deserve!
@@snispy I think the studio version will be a lot better but I'm just kinda bothered by the lyrics. I feel like every other song is better about it but it just feels kinda repetitive and forced to me.
after listening to the I Want A Dog single.. - overall the song is way more energetic. this version is much toned down and somber - I wish they didn't substitute half of the solo for two choruses. -.the verse before the chorus sounds much better now - The vocals also sound better, and they removed some lyrics, which i don't mind at all - production is still shite and this live version has better sounding everything, aside from vocals; but hey, at least the single sounds like a winter song I think that in context with SZNZ, the single is definitely better, but on it's own i prefer the live rendition a bit more.
yeah, i hope that for the actual EP they keep the original i hope they opted for 2 choruses because its the single and that they will keep the original lyrics since they give the song a bit more depth showing not implying the person in the start grew up and went to prison because of a bad choice he made and the original setup of the song but even if they didn't i'd be fine with it. I love this version and the other version, and I'm not the biggest like music guy so production sounds fine to me,
@@evan_sy Take a time to relisten a few times. Especially when you're already listen to bootleg first. You just need to get used to studio version and turn off the bias things and boom.. the EP feels joyful.
The Deep and Dreamless Sleep is a pretty underwhelming ending, but the name goes hard as fuck. It's the last song on all of SZNZ, it has to go out with some type of finality bang. Hopefully it was just the live performance that ends like that, and the songs are still being tweaked and refined, especially that one.
I agree! The name definitely hits hard and I think there will be some tweaks to either that or maybe we'll see a reworking of song order to make Iambic Pentameter the closer as I personally think it could work too! I think the choir will make the deep and dreamless sleep sound much more grand when it's fully produced it can kinda be heard but its not all there yet. Sorry for the long response though I'm just obsessed with winter 😅
@@snispy oh no I definitely agree with you. personally I hope dreamless stays the closer, as the name just *sounds* like the last song on an album. iambic pentameter is good too. my biggest thing with the live showing is the album sounds incomplete, which makes sense considering they played the album before autumn was even released. hopefully when winter releases it will be properly, but not overly, produced, and ends on a high note for the sznz project. it would be super disappointing if it ends in the same way as Wild At Heart, for example, which just ends on one single note.
@@trupizza671 Yeah I hope they manage to do the production just right like they did with Autumn IMO I really want SZNZ to have a good sendoff since its personally one of my favorite projects the band has released!
@Mike Davis I think Rivers sounds fine vocally, it just doesn't seem like the grandiose ending you'd expect of the last song of the entire SZNZ project. For example, Thank you and goodnight from Summer had an explosive outro. Run Raven Run had the entire pacific sunset bridge and buildup. the deep and dreamless sleep just kinda...ends immediately. no outro words, no final solo, no instrumental, it just ends right after the final line of the chorus is said. Idk, if that's how they choose to do it I'll be kind of disappointed. but I'm still excited for SZNZ: Winter regardless. I love the sznz project and am excited to see how Winter is translated onto the full production of the album.
These are some great songs but I really hope they get some more unique melodies in the intros. A lot of the guitar sounds really similar at the beginning and its an odd choice. These sound great though, especially Basketball and the one who got away
That's what I thought too, I really hope they change it when it releases because it kind of bothers me how similar the chords and strumming is to basketball.
@@geraldgreg5370 Yeah they are similar to me but personally I don't mind because they all sound similar to an amazing song. I also feel like it does capture that somber winter tone which is great for SZNZ and overall I wouldn't mind if they hardly changed it but I see what you guys are getting at.
@@catsupempire3920 The song pacing is better, the lyrics are better, the track listing is better, the vocal performances are stronger, and the darker tone of this performance sounds a lot better for these songs. A lot of great things were taken out of these songs too, for one reason or another. (Iambic Pentameter shortened, bridge of Baskeball/ending is way worse on the record, I want a dog is butchered compared to this version, etc.) If they’d put the album out just like this, it would be perfect. Instead the songs sound like they’re being rushed through and none hit nearly as hard. (The production on the album is also pretty shit)
No, the studio version is better. I miss some of the sadness, but most of the actual song structure changes improved the songs. The last 3 songs on the live performance start to feel samey. The big change I’m sad about is the lyrics in Deep and Dreamless Sleep. And the production is fantastic. They pulled off the Blue vibe + orchestral parts + beautiful acoustic moments.
Someone managed to sneak a phone or some sort of recording device into the troubadour show where they first played SZNZ: Winter live and they leaked the videos through reddit telling people about the bootleg and sending it through Gmail and a website too im pretty sure though I can't recall its name.

Just seems like more of what the SZNZ's EP's have been. A handful of tracks that range from bad to mediocre, with maybe 1 or 2 tracks that stick out more then the rest. Hopefully whatever they do after this (Rivers has already said they have 2 full length albums in the works) is just more interesting. All these SZNZ's songs have been so bland and forgettable. Maybe a successor to OK Human or something more along the lines of White and EWBAITE.

@@snispy i agree
Add the comparison of the bootleg and the final product to the pile of irrefutable evidence that overproduction and crush are holding Weezer back.
But please don't get me wrong, I loved both versions!
yeah, as it turns out, they did this to see a crowd's reaction to the current state of the album which was leaning heavily into orchestral instrumentation much like OK Human, they said after the visual feedback they went back and changed the album to still feature lots of orchestral work but more of that famous blue album crunch, I like how it turned out, but this feels even more wintery than the final product.
This is not overproduction, it’s actually pretty raw other than in places that need production
@@tyrraria597 I do not claim to be a music expert, but when I say overproduction, I am merely referring to the added effects, the sort of synthetic guitars and other sounds that are added in post. I hope you understand what I mean.
@@Conorize that’s fair, sometimes I think they should just record a separate version of each song for deluxe editions with no changes, they always knock live shows out of the park so I don’t see why not
@@tyrraria597 That's what I think too!
Deep and dreamless sleep sounds miles better than the bootleg. Though i do prefer the bootleg for iambic pentameter
how's the rest
I wish they kept that little solo for iambic, and apart of me likes the changes for dreamless sleep like hownit ends but I wish he kept the lyrics and first part of the songs tone the same as the live performance like more somber then he could have had the buildup, either way both are great tho!
I agree on both accounts
I really liked the studio version. It does suffer from overproduction but I think the song writing is the strongest from all the EPs and the updates benefits some songs. I prefer basketball in the studio version more than here for example.

Songs from the black hole vibes for some reason
i got a little bit of ewbaite vibes on basketball
Full album is out now. It’s… different than this. Sounds like winter wasn’t quite complete when they made this and did the kimmel performance. Sounds a little blue but… definitely over produced at times. Basketball only has one oo alley oop and the strumming is different… 🤷♂️
this tracklist is full of various time signatures
Not entirely sure what you mean but it probably is 💀
@@snispy It's basically how many beats they play in a measure of seconds.
@@godaberi yeah I thought it was something like that, thanks for clarifying!
@@godaberi isnt 6/8 the same as 3/4
@@TheRoloHDGamesAndFails Technically yea, 6/8 is just 3/4 but doubled, but that's just when counting the notes. sonically they sound very apart. 3/4 is a simple meter while 6/8 is a compound meter. they have other quirks like where the accents are played and the number of beats. if u notice, 3/4 sounds like an average 4/4 time but without the last 4, and 6/8 sounds almost swing-ish
you a champ for this 👏👏🔥

@@billyshead1339 i think the single is either gonna be i want a dog or basketball both would be amazing singles
I think person who did the mastering makes the EP sounds overproducing (as many people said?). Because Suzy Shinn said they were really trying to recreate the Blue tone.. she's even asked Chris Shaw, who engineered and mixed the Blue Album.
I think it does hit a lot of that Blue Album mark, definitely the most blue album esque thing i've heard from them in awhile but I get what you mean!
I hope they get the whole band to sing in this like on Ok Human.
Also Sheraton Commander is awesome but misleading af

Cleaner, more finished demo of basketball 🏀
Yup!
the main problem i have with winter is the track order i like the track order far better then the studio release. also this sheraton commander is better then the studio version
I preferred this version of the Basketball bridge, even though the alley-oop sounds a little weird its that classic weezer charm
I feel like Rivers pulled from Songs from the Black Hole and fan favorite demos for the SZNZ project
Yeah he's been reusing some stuff from old demos! to me it sounds a lot like make believe demos but I can definitely see inspiration from SFTBH too!
Weezer threw out a teaser of I am a dogs studio version. I personally think it’s better. There’s more harmony. Vocal line is a bit different with more falsetto. Dark Enough to See the Stars is very Songs from the Black Hole
yeah, I agree!
Playful Superfriend-esque melody
I feel like they didn't play it in order... Iambic Pentameter definitely feels like the ending of the EP
@@sirslurmusic Thats true! Either way winter goes there's no doubt it'll end up great to me!

I liked basketball the most at first but the one that got away has grown on me
The whole EP is too good for me to have a favorite honestly! I really love Basketball, I Want A Dog, The One That Got Away, and The Deep And Dreamless Sleep!
@@snispy Yeah I agree, I also really like Sheraton Commander and love the deep and dreamless sleep, but if it is the final track of SZNZ I hope they spruce it up a bit and give it more weight as the closer. It's kinda funny that nobody has mentioned dark enough to see the stars, it just feels kinda like filler to me and I hope the studio version is better.

Woah yea that’s true. What’s the single gonna be? I didn’t even think about that. Lol. 🥴
@@billyshead1339 To me the singles are between Basketball and I Want A Dog looking forward to either one!
after listening to the I Want A Dog single..
- overall the song is way more energetic. this version is much toned down and somber
- I wish they didn't substitute half of the solo for two choruses.
-.the verse before the chorus sounds much better now
- The vocals also sound better, and they removed some lyrics, which i don't mind at all
- production is still shite and this live version has better sounding everything, aside from vocals; but hey, at least the single sounds like a winter song
I think that in context with SZNZ, the single is definitely better, but on it's own i prefer the live rendition a bit more.
yeah, i hope that for the actual EP they keep the original i hope they opted for 2 choruses because its the single and that they will keep the original lyrics since they give the song a bit more depth showing not implying the person in the start grew up and went to prison because of a bad choice he made and the original setup of the song but even if they didn't i'd be fine with it. I love this version and the other version, and I'm not the biggest like music guy so production sounds fine to me,
The bridge for deep and dreamless sleep feels sounds similar to another song and idk which one.

If there's no epic ending, Winter is more of an epilogue to seasons since Run Raven Run is an epic closer.
Three of these guitar intros are just Simple Fisherman or Time is Running Out For Me. But not the melody. Odd
Yeah I got some make believe demo vibes from a lot of the songs intros but I'm all here for it! Wish they'd use the melody too though

What part/section of Vivaldi’s seasons does Sheraton commander come from?
Sheraton Commander is based on Adagio in G Minor by Albinoni :)
These are some great songs but I really hope they get some more unique melodies in the intros. A lot of the guitar sounds really similar at the beginning and its an odd choice. These sound great though, especially Basketball and the one who got away
Yeah I noticed they sounded similar too. Imo its not too bad though but hopefully they can individualize the intros a bit more
my money is on Brian not knowing all of the songs and playing the same progression…

(Iambic Pentameter shortened, bridge of Baskeball/ending is way worse on the record, I want a dog is butchered compared to this version, etc.)

@@jackengdall It's always the production isn't it?
No, the studio version is better. I miss some of the sadness, but most of the actual song structure changes improved the songs. The last 3 songs on the live performance start to feel samey. The big change I’m sad about is the lyrics in Deep and Dreamless Sleep.
And the production is fantastic. They pulled off the Blue vibe + orchestral parts + beautiful acoustic moments.

I also think the songs will change a decent bit (for better or worse) during production so I wanted to archive this and people are going to search for this anyways since it was common knowledge it was leaked I just didn't want anyone to have to go anywhere sketchy to find it
@@nob0r yeah but still the least they could have done is maybe let them know about the show in L.A. and not play under a stage name only super hard-core fans know about, an alternative would be to let people know early that the tickets weren't selling well which would given people a chance at canceling flight tickets and possibly getting refunds
Terrible. 8,700 views and only 200 likes says it all.
