Join me on an interesting walk around Hong Kong, trying Hong Kong Street Food & more!
There are definitely some interesting corners to find in Hong Kong. While being in central Hong Kong I stumbled upon a busy street food place, so I decided to give Hong Kong street food another try. Later I found a place where people do "villain hitting", which reminded me a lot about voodoo. A very unique and interesting experience here in Hong Kong.

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia. It is my goal here on the channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see many tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.

You are a well mannered, friendly, open minded and respectful young man, we like to see you visiting HK more often, enjoy the rest of the stay here.
You're very open-minded and respectful towards other religions and cultures. Good on you, Ken! 👍
The golden thingy thrown symbolizing the permission or answer granted for something she requested before that. Both sides facing up or down denotes disapproval whereas facing opposite sides denotes otherwise. 20:53 the shaman lady was asking the Tiger God to protect you. 21:07 The sweeping your palms action symbolizes the ridding of villains of you by uttering ‘go away’, then the beating ritual to enunciate it. 21:37 you were right with your own translation. 22:53 the yellow paper was some sort of amulet for protection. The red packet you got said 900 million tael, denoting you are blessed with wealth this year. Hope it helps.
11:30 they are tour groups from mainland China. The site there is Bauhinia Square, and the bauhinia statue commemorates HK's return to China in 1997. I am a local in HK and you have already been to more interesting places than me (like the dim sum place in the last video and Sha Tau Kok). Not to mention trying the villain hitting 😅
The sweet toast in Hong Kong is really delicious, and the Hong Kong-style French toast fried with butter and eggs is always my favorite!
Ken, you are right, those people with stickers on their chests should be from the Chinese travel group!
Villain hitting/打小人 is a popular voodoo ritual in the Pearl River Delta of Hong Kong and Guangdong. It is hoped that the so-called "villains" can be driven out through this voodoo ritual.
Villain hitting is actually just an act of protecting yourself, not deliberately cursing others. The correct meaning of the villain is anyone around you who is unfavorable to you!
Ken, you are a very humble and polite young man, everyone likes you, I am sure you don't need that ceremony, but you are really suitable for traveling in Asia!
Really great job again, thanks a lot for sharing!👍🥰🙏🙌
Thank you, appreciate the kind words 🙏
@@KenAbroad It is my honor, thanks to you too! Your personality is really great, I like! 👍🤩👏
@@KenAbroad We hope you can visit Indonesia and travel to Jakarta, Bandung and Bali
It's not voodoo as Voodoo is an actual religion itself. Villian hitting is more of a folk believe/sorcery.
yes you are right. 21:38 she asked the tigars to bite all bad people around you. 21:42 she shouted "JAU" which means "go away". 22:43 the yellow paper is a kind of amulet. The red pocket is a sign of good luck. 23:09 she said "good luck from to start to the end of the year, earn a lot money and fill all your pots and pans, and then buy houses and cars. And the white paper represents the ancient chinese bank note which is 900M ancient chinese dollars
I was wondering if anyone could translate that and I checked if not I would do that also. Thx for translating that in details. Ken this is a correct translation of the meaning what that woman said during the ceremony.
It is so interesting to see you trying the Villain hitting under the flyover, that was the district where I grown up, called Wanchai.
And may be ten year later, you may find the dai pai dong which you have toasts and lemon tea was not there any more, cause they are closing down one by one when their owners retired, so it is so nice you have tried and filmed them. Welcome to Hong Kong again!
Ken, you are brilliant n smart👍you catch-up things so good😄
Great video, great content & info on Hong Kong breakfast food, culture & belief especially on d villain hitting belief ... I find it very fascinating to watch ... Thanks again Ken for another great sharing ... 👍
Hi Ken, happy to see you had a decent lunch in Bing Kee. That’s my favourite traditional “Cha Dong” in HK.
Ken , you are funny man , welcome to Hong Kong again.
Thank you so much for visiting the villain beaters. It was very interesting to see the sequence of the ceremony as it is something that my son would like to experience when he visits Hong Kong in the near future.
10:56 that thing is the Golden Bauhinia, which is a famous sculpture and is the symbol of Hong Kong!
The golden bauhinia is shown in many ceremonies and famous events, especially on the 1st of July, the day Hong Kong was handovered and is a national holiday, (kind of like 4th July in the USA).
Ken at 11:30 this place is called the Golden Bauhinia Square, the giant statue is the golden Bauhinia blakeana which is a flower originated in Hong Kong
That’s other amazing videos ❤ thanks Ken for your sharing ❤ I’m rooting for you 💪🏻
Hello Ken and everyone else here. Hope everyone is doing great and has an amazing weekend. Cheers to all 🙏
U are Awesome. Fr Kuching
Wow nice hongkong very clean❤❤❤❤❤
Omg, thats literally just one block away from my apartment hahaha... Can't believe you actually try that voodoo thingy hahaha!!! Hope you enjoy Hong Kong!!!
Yummy toast and a lovely stroll in Victoria Park and Victoria Harbour....very beautiful, clean and well maintained. The "villain hitting" ritual/ "da siu yan" (in Cantonese) is very interesting and knowledgeable. Though l have heard of it but today, in this video, l can see you taking part in this ritual. A big applause to you for giving it a try, Ken. That ritual aunty/lady said that there are a lot of bad people and bad luck around you so she bashes the images of those targets and also to get rid of your bad luck. The card in that red envelope picked by you indicates that you will be rich, will be able to buy big car and house in the future 😄🙏 Wherever you go, always bring along that red envelope with an inscribed yellow paper for protection. A big thanks for this great and interesting content. I really enjoyed this vlog. Well done for the good job, Ken. Keep it up !!!
Enjoy your trip. HK also a foods heaven. I like their foods so much. And I hope you enjoy their foods too. Stay safe and thanks for sharing.😊
happy exploring! enjoy watching your video
What a great experience
Love to watch your channel
The golden statue everyone was taking photos of is the Golden Bauhinia, it's located next to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This was where the handover ceremony was held in 1997. The Bauhinia is the floral symbol of Hong Kong and also appears on the Hong Kong flag.
How interesting
I have stay in Hong Kong for 42 years
And never had this experience in my life!😂😂
It’s refreshing to see Hong Kong through your eyes. I’ve lived here for three years and I absolutely love this place.
Greetings from a fellow German 😉
You are absolutely adorable ❤
Very courteous well mannered young man. Love you already.
Hong Kong is my birth place now in USA, you brought me back good memories, thank you!
Btw the ritual thing under the overpass was gone last I saw it, just a few weeks ago. Perhaps they have moved.
That envelope said you will be prosperous for the rest of your life🤣
Welcome to Hong Kong, Ken.
The helicopter you saw at seaside belongs to the Government Flying Service. If the helicopter lands there, mainly performing medic transport, picking patients from the outlying island to the city.
Yes, and go in the direction U are looking at the helicopter and go for 4 MTR station to Sheung Wan, you can catch a helicopter to Macau, around 30 minutes trip. I think around HKD $2000+ each.
12:23 I laughed out loud when the 打小人 lady started speaking broken mandarin to you as if you look like a Chinese tourist hahaaa
You were so near Tin Hau which the noddle i was telling you about. Enjoy Ken!
Have seen your video(s) with trams going by. Should definitely try that (upper deck) + star ferry.
Glad you visited HK and tried more traditional foods/culture which in HK😊… Shamshuipo will be good for the visiting for tourist in about HK peoples life.
very interesting experience !
Yup, typically Hong Kong dai pai dong .... In Hong Kong, well in my case, chances you always have to share tables when eating out. I do have to admit , The Hong Kong nightview is exceptionally incredible... One of the best of all the places that I have visited... Still hope you are having the time of your life in Hongkong. Stay safe and take care out there.
Danke for the video!
Glad to see you in Tai Hang at the start of the vlog. That’s where I spend my time mostly. Fun traditional and modern café coexist.
Great to vacation here in hong kong friend, i hope you enjoyed the street foods and some tourist spot here in hong kong, 24:34

cond. milk + jam 奶占多,
Think-sliced butter 鮮油多,
butter + jam 油占多,
peanut butter + jam 占醬多
Try all of them! ❤
Ken you should visit Sai Kung to eat some sea food and do a bit of hiking
About the villain hitting, I’ve read that some people used to do it vodoo style harming some specific bad people (you can write their name on the tigers), but since in Taoist theory such demonic things you do comes back to yourself (karma, in buddhist term), so few people do that now, instead, they ask for peace and resolving conflicts.
If you want to witness and learn more about the culture of Hong Kong I’d highly recommend you to visit the M plus museum and end your day with a relaxing walk along the Promenade next to the museum.
welcome to hong kong!
1st throw of the shell by you is good (one open and one closed) 2nd throw by you she mentioned is no good ( she mentioned you have many 小人)So she used the stick to hit the paper as a symbolism of getting rid of the bad people in your life.
She then passed you a piece of inscribed yellow paper slated into a red packet for your protection together with a lucky greeting (招财进宝). You bring it wherever you go. That’s the process. Cheers!
The tiger lady needs your name and bday so the God know who you are hence they can help you.
19:11 men and women bad people go away!
19:19 bad luck go away!
The coin tossing is to see if the gods are willing to help. Imagine if you toss for a NO for many times in a row, it means even the gods can’t help you.
She then says after two nos in a row “you have many mean people around you” that’s why he asks you to pour the wine
20:47 tiger please help him to solve problems
21:03 (bad ppl) go away! Go away!
21:11 bad people from east west north south, men bad ppl, women bad ppl go away!
21:43 bite all the bad people! Bad people go away!
21:57 sacred heaven and earth, (inaduible)
22:41 “ping-an!” means keep you safe and sound!
23:13 9 billion! Goddess gave you 9 billion of wealth, buy house buy car, work from year to year! Goddess keep you safe sound and wealthy!
thank you
In HK i love going up the Victoria Peak by the HK vernacular and then back down by bus. Such amazing views up there.
Great content as always. Thanks Ken. 👍👍👍😍😍😍
That stall you ate the toast is in Tin Hau yea? There is an indoor swimming pool in Victoria park. 10:51 is the Golden Bauhinia square which is a common tourist spot for mainlanders. The villain hitting lady actually told you not to record her in the video. 😅
10:40 The place is called Golden Bauhinia Square, so you know what the statue is. Bauhinia is the flower of the city, and the statue was a gift from the Chinese government to Hong Kong; and many Chinese visitors like to take pictures there. As a local I don't find it too special though.
12:04 While villain hitting is quite a special sight, it's not exactly common among locals. It's also technically a type of Chinese witchcraft (distinct from folk religion like folk Taoism), so something to be cautious about.
welcome to Hong Kong~
the golden flower is "the flower emblem of Hong Kong"
flower of Hong Kong Orchid Tree
When you see clothes hanging in public to be dried, you know you are in Asia. When you see restaurants with a lot of people and genuine owners… you know you are in a delicious ones with honest owners…
u can take a bus too going to macau.. it's more cheaper .. try it
Hi Ken:You see more older people take a photo place. This is Golden Bauhinia Square.
Hi Ken😊 I think I heard the lady said wishing you happiness and prosperity in my dialect. Other then that she started to speak Cantonese. Anyways Greetings from sunny northwestern Minnesota
welcome to HK🥰
That golden flower statue was a gift from China government to celebrate Hong Kong returned back to China in 1997. Mainland Chinese tourists love that thing
That was extremely interesting, a shame about the language barrier though. I would like that experience.
The building Exebition Arts center of Hongkong,That golden bauhinia Sangkeen. Those tourist from china..😊Glad u try the traditional belief f the cantonese chinese ,that place in borrington .causewsy bay.Hope u visit the T I mes Square.Sir ken.❤😊Explore more in Hongkong.😊
Have you tried wonton noodles yet?
2:44 this is called西多士
your should try 西多士
It’s very easy to reach to many hiking places. May take 15mind or 30mins. I can take you to hiking if you are still in HK.
Next Time if you will come to HK, pls let us know. More places are waiting for you to explore here e.g. egg tarts, dim sum, roast pig and goose, etc.
20:46 she say the paper tiger will help you to ride out the storm. remove (impending) ill fortune
glad to know you had such interesting experience in HK~~~
I'll be visiting hongkong in June and i hope and go there. Where is it located tho?
Google maps links are in the description ✌️
Wow Ken! You really assimilated into HK Chinese’s Taoist culture. Good riddance away all negativity / badness etc. 👍🏻
It’s funny 打小人
Ken you still in HK?
0:15 Ken, you just don't walk to Bing Kee by accident and 1:45 i think you know you're going to have one of the best pork chop sandwiches in town....
You going to win the euro lottery ken🎉
Hitting the paper person is like sticking a needle in a voodoo doll. Hope you're having fun in Hong Kong, Ken.
19:12 she say, all the bad guy and bad luck go away from you
10:00 That’s a rescue helicopter, doing rescue work.
10:30 Those old people are all tourists from Mainland China.
The hitting villain process is to shoo away the negative and bad influence ppl around you. The throwing of the thing before the ceremony is to ask for gods permission to bless u.. "very very good" is when the God agrees to bless u.. hitting paper man of with the shoe is like bashing the bad ppl in your life and she would curse them as she hits it. The burning of the fire ard u symbolises burning away bad energy. The yellow piece of paper in the end is a good luck charm... I'm from hk and hope u enjoy my city
😂😂the host came crossed with the tourists at the Golden Bauhinia Square in front of the Wan Cha Convention & Exhibition Centre. They are tourists from PRC.
We all use the “octopus card” for all the transportation fares and small purchases, no one carries coins in Hong Kong.
my best bro looking handsome thank you for your huge respect against cpec friendship countries lot of love from your best bro viki 🍻
Ken is a man of culture 🙄😂
Zu den Vögeln; die sind in der Brunftzeit, Ken. 😆
Nice discovering more nice place in hongkong.stay safe always.😍👍😄🙏🇵🇭
ken, any chance for u to visit mainland china?
Planing to do that 100%. Maybe later this year
@@KenAbroad Hopefully you have the opportunity to visit Indonesia
The envelope means make lots of money, good fortune. Also Hk charges people of jaywalking so cross at the lights only 😊
Those were Mainland Chinese tourists.
Many people from China goto the place near the sea side take the photos. The golden flower which is the symbol of HK . That is the reason why they take the photo, because it is only place in HK have this golden flower. (Made in China built 1997, 1 July.) That is important day HK back to China.
It would be better if you use your own shoe to hit the villian😂
🤣😂
It is a practice done in Malaysia as well. To remove bad omen or spirit sticking to us.

When she put the paper over ur hand ,she said let the bad ppl away from you
Maybe it has to be done a few times to cleanse the aura to attract the good luck.
😂😂😂❤
LOL. The lady asked Chinese ancestors to bless their children and grandchildren, but Ken is German.
Ken, how did you feel after the villain hitting ceremony?
That’s a tiger god and she is beseeching the god to eat the bad people and bad luck. What u were throwing was to show how much bad people or bad luck was affecting you. After that she burns the tigers to come eat the bad people or luck away. The card was for good luck and the symbol in the circle is to invite prosperity “cao cai”.
Very informative video🙂. Keep up the good work.
Hope my videos can be as good as yours.
The Chinese called it medium. Voodoo is more a request to do someone harm.
Sharp haircut!
Villain Hitting to get lucky😂, Hit out bad luck.
Beat your little head. Your work never go ahead. Beat your little hand. Your good luck come to the end. Beat your little eye. Very soon you die. Beat your little foot. Everything is no good.
The end you choose a pocket, inside huge lucky for earning a lot of money!👍
No one but a madman goes to HK to eat bread slathered with sickly sweet condensed milk & topped with yucky peanut butter! Try out the congee (chuk/jook in Cantonese) next time, brother.
