The first, smoother bass sound is, as others point out, a bass pedal, but when you hear the bass moving around, it is Mike Rutherford on bass guitar (hard to move around pressing pedal notes with your feet). I wish Steve's guitar were mixed a bit more to the front (not much, but just a bit more). Mike Rutherford is in the same league as players like Chris Squire; obviously his style is different, but he's a master. If anyone in Genesis is underrated, it's Mike-Rutherford-as-bassist.
From an album perspective, listening to Entangled puts you into a dreamlike state and fades out. And then, Squonk kicks in and startles you. After listening to this album many times, after the ending of Entangled, you can't help but hear that abrupt beginning of Squonk in your head.
I think I commented the same thing on his Entangled reaction. You eagerly anticipate the beginning of Squonk when you listen to Entangled. Such a contrast and surprise.
Collins said they were trying to get the feel of Kahmir by Zeppelin. Rutherford wrote most of this one. He sticks with patterns unlike Banks who uses 30 chords per song.
@@ElstromF Mike is indeed in Squire's league. He also plays an excellent 12-string guitar. His bass technique is fine. Mike's creativity is next level.
Saw Steve Hackett and band perform this, Robbery, Dance on a Volcano, Los Endos and the rest of Seconds Out last year. Psychedelics were involved. Great concert.
Sqounk está conectada con Dance on a Volcano, Its Yourself y Los Endos.
This whole album is wonderful. For a big change of pace listen to the opening track: 'Dance on a Volcano'.(interesting, if difficult to understand lyrics)
Wonderful song. There are several great live versions of this in YT. Phil Collins really loved to do this. Around 76-80. Reminder, I dont think you have yet done The Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty.

Is Chris Squire a highly rated bassist?
What he's talking about are the super phat Moog Taurus Bass Pedals. That's where that amazing tone comes from. Analog synth with FAT Moog oscillators.
@@Wizardofgosz He is.
@@MDElam Massively overrated.
The central bass is a moog taurus. Pedals
Yup.
Those drum fills and runs are what get me. Lovely album.
The sound you thought was a Saxophone was actually keyboards

I love how the theme from Volcano reappears in the guitar at 8:07. It also reoccurs in Los Endos of course.
Genius has walked into the room once again.......

Michael Rutherford is on the level of Squire, Lee, and McCartney. Technically, and creatively.
:) level of Sqire? And in what category? In dressing?
Nice guys, but they play in different leagues in the instrument playing technique category.

Trick of the tail is one of my favorite album from my favorite band.
You should pursue with Ripples, Dance on a volcano and Los endos.
Back then this really grew on me. Listen to the lyrics... How can you get emotional about the demise of a mythical creature... Crazy!

Listen to "Seconds Out" live version, it's really good. The all album is great. Genesis are great!!!
Time for Ripples!!!!!!
Two central instrumental lines in this Genesis work. Mellotron and moog taurus

When Genesis performed this live in the 70s they would follow Entangled with this, as on the album. Perfect.

What you're hearing are the Moog Taurus Bass Pedals. Those Moog oscillators are just super fat.
Squonk kick ass. Please, react to Dance on a volcano.
other great songs on this album you haven't heard: Dance on a Volcano, Ripples, Los Endos
No saxophones on this tracktrack, that's an ARP 2600 pro soloist Synthesizer
Supposed to be zeppelin like
Saxophone??? See You in another life...
