The Micro800 Control Systems by Rockwell Automation provides a cost-effective solution for small to medium automation systems. The controllers within this family are typically used on stand-alone machines or small process applications. The family offers five distinct controller types that are further customizable through add-on modules: Micro810, Micro820, Micro830, Micro850, and Micro870.
Unlike the other Rockwell Automation controllers, this line of PLCs is programmed through a dedicated software: Connected Components Workbench. From within this tool, the programmer can flash the firmware, load the program, and monitor the state of the controller. Furthermore, Connected Components Workbench (CCW) is often used to program other non-PLC Rockwell Automation devices such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and certain Safety Relays.

Thanks to your video, and now I know more about the Micro850. A zeolite unit for cleaning fuel gas from sulfur was brought to our new station. The installation has a CompactLogix L30ER and two Micro850 2080-LC50-48QWB installed. Installation has not yet been completed, and has not been commissioned due to the pandemic.
Thank you for your time and hard working!

I'd be curious as to why they decided to add two Micro850 PLCs... The L30ER should have plenty of capability.

@@SolisPLC The installation consists of three parts, the main part controls L30ER, and two furnaces controls Micro850. It has not yet been commissioned to us, and I see it the first time, so I know little about it.

Question for u, I have two computers, both have connected components workbench 20.01.00. When I open the catalog window, only one of my computers has the Controller in the list. My other computer only gives me the option of Drives, Motor Starts and Safety.
How can I add Controllers to that list???????

Would you suggest a beginner starting with the Micro 800's over the 1100 these days?

Either one is good to get started. In my experience, most large manufacturers I've worked for always prioritized MicroLogix 1100 (or anything on RSLogix 500) over the Micro800 series. I've personally have rarely seen Micro800 in the field. That being said, I've had numerous conversations with OEMs / end-users that use them. The point is, you can learn on both; in my experience, RSLogix 500 is more utilized.

Great video. Also fantastic camera work where we could read all the terminal tags. Is that programming software free ??

I wonder which Virtual Machine it was that you used to cause the last PLC to get bricked? When I used VMWare at work, I didn't have any problems downloading firmware to the PLC to upgrade it. I also have VirtualBox on my home laptop that I sometimes use for PLC projects so it would be great to know if it was in VirtualBox. Thank you for your video!
Oh, and to answer your question, Yes, I have only seen one of these at an automotive plant I worked at. Honestly, it was quickly phased out as myself and the other Controls Engineer both felt it was a step backwards and we upgraded it to a CompactLogix and made a new program for it. (Small assembly sequencing program).

I use VM Workstation Pro. After this happened, I got in touch with Rockwell and from what they told me, the problem isn't the VM itself, but rather how the USB drives behave by default. In other words, during the Firmware flash process, a sequence is sent, then the USB is disconnected and reconnected, the next sequence is sent. If the USB is not reconnected, the flash fails and may cause damage. You can prevent this by changing that the default is to reconnect the USB immediately into the VM (default is to use the host). They also told me that this was fixed in the new PLCs; the one I had was from 2016 (I got it on eBay).
I've been on the lookout for them ever since. Some very small machines utilize them (baggers, check weighers, reject stations), but that's about it...
Thank you for the kind comment!

Thank you for all of the content that you share! We are having a problem with one of our Micro850 controllers. It was working fine, and then one of my students plugged into it and downloaded a project, and now we can no longer discover the PLC. It wont allow us to upload, download, and it wont even show up on our BootP Tool. Do you have any ideas of what could be the cause / solution?

I had a similar issue after a firmware flash. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for my controller in that situation. If you purchased it recently, it should still be covered under warranty; I'd reach out to Rockwell and ask for a replacement.

    Good day
I have a question about sending data from a garmin transducer which has a etgernet connection over RS 485 using a ethernet to 485 converter. Is this possible and do you have any suggestions ?

Hi Anton, I haven't used a converter from EtherNet to RS485, but there are many RS485 options available. I've used the CompactLogix Prosoft modules for RS485 in several plants.
