NOT OUR WAR: Africans fleeing Ukraine - BBC Africa Eye documentary

  • It’s estimated thousands of Africans were among more than five million refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As they tried to escape the carnage, many Africans were treated like second class citizens. Reports of discrimination at Ukraine’s western borders were widespread with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees acknowledging racist treatment.
BBC Africa journalist, Peter Okwoche, was at the Polish border reporting on the African experience days after war broke out. In the weeks which followed he also spoke to many Africans still caught up in the conflict.
Did they make it to safety? Africa Eye investigates.

By first world countries, I'm referring to those who send the most Aid such as Canada, USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, as opposed to the now decimated Europe & beyond full of grafting second-world countries.
"Not the peoples fault ....." what, that so very many scams originate there, and if there's a way to steal money from good, decent, unsuspecting people either online or via telephone, Authorities don't have to work too hard to figure out where the scammers are, that's not the peoples fault .... really? It's actually become a national sport playing with scammers - they're all over facebook stealing Western World's photos of horses, boats, houses and putting them up to sale for sale & making people pay deposits via Western Union etc Bloody hilarious when we spend hours & hours talking to them about horses that they know absolutely NOTHING about and their answers are published in all the horse groups for everyone to have a good giggle over.
I donated $1k's through organised charities, I put several boys through school & Uni, hoping to make a small contribution to societal change - NO CHANGE, not 20+ years ago, not today, which actually seems much worse.

Unfortunately, to some extent you're correct, only to take it to a completely apathetic, disingenuous and obtuse stance, by "changing" the order of things, because if you're really cognizant on what really lies underneath both sides' interactions you would know that even if 25% of the african inmigrants would have joined the war effort, those inhuman people that denied them the train, would have done so again, so if you were the inmigrant, how would you proceed??? Fight for people that didn't show any regard for your family and kin or in this case, leave?
Basically there's no incentive for them to fight, only regret if they do.

At the very least, you would ask yourself, what was my whole point in saving your life only to place it in jeopardy again, right?

@The Lost One It is illegal for nationals of most countries to fight for a foreign nation. In fact you can be jailed for treason and stripped off your nationality. And fighting for another country is one of the few sections which allows for stripping nationality worldwide. This was the law used by Western countries to strip ISIS volunteers. Though the problem there was, when you strip someone, you were automatically accepting that ISIS had a nation. Also, there were many foreign volunteers in the beginning of the war. But the Ukrainians rejected anyone who was not White assuming they were there for the citizenship. The truth could not be farther since most such people normally volunteer in the French or the US military and did not really have to choose Ukraine. Coupled with loss of nationality, it is simply not possible for a foreigner to fight for Ukraine. From the looks of it, Ukrainian society much like Polish one is quite racist and is accepted as normal by the government. We have racism in India to a minor extent, but the state accepts no racism of any form.

Jet V. I’m replying from the Uk. I’m with you on this one.
People here are receiving Ukrainian refugees into their homes, direct from Ukrainian war zones after 70 DAYS of war.
These Ukrainian citizens arriving in UK as I write, are females and kids ONLY, who have only now in the last few days managed to escape out of Ukraine.
Here in the Uk, there is a lot of respect and admiration, for the Ukrainian nation based primarily on the fact that they are fighting back against the aggression of Russia and NOT running away.
I too am saddened to hear so many comments on this video of “Not our fight” , general ‘woe is me’ comments, etc. These Africans presumably choose to live in and amongst the general population of Ukraine, but the evidence from this video is that they are completely uncommitted citizens.
The interviewee near the start stated that the border guards where treating “EVERYBODY THE SAME”. In other words, the guards treated everybody badly. Maybe understandably given the general chaos of the moment. So, how has this become a story about race?
The BBC should do a follow up article on volunteers from Ukraines African population who have joined the fight to save Ukrainian civilisation. I for one would happily respect and admire these individuals.
From the evidence of this video I wouldn’t expect a follow up article any time soon.
Ukraine is better off without some of the loathsome characters in this report.

My country was welcome to give them an opportunity to study, but the hard time started for Ukrainians and a lot of Ukrainian have been killed I can hear these bad words about my country instead of a drop of empathy to Ukrainian people. I was evacuated together with African students and there was no difference between me and them. We tried to support each other. Ukrainians don't have any difference to the colour of person, but Ukrainians can directly correct you if you do something wrong. Fo example, in the line there should be elderly people and mothers with kids first, no matter what nationality you are, first to help are kids with mothers and elderly people, it's our Ukrainian mentality. No matter what colour of your skin if you are a man, you must let kids with mothers and elderly people be save first. It's Ukrainian mentality, it's not to be choosy towards different nationalities. On Ukrainian land all nationalities are equal of front of this rule. Ukrainian men or women without children even can't emagine to save themselves first, it's out of our mentality. Under UN rules, anyone can flee a war zone, their status doesn't matter. The reason there is a discussion about this is that there are 80,000 international students in the Ukraine, mostly from Africa, India or the middle east who have phones so they can livestream or tiktok their experiences at the border. Some of them are Western citizens. A CNN reporter documented the escape of his sister who had been adopted from Sierra Leone. It is incredible so many millions of people evacuated so quickly, and safely. I think the number of fatalities which resulted from the evacuation are low, and those are the result of the interruption of medical care for elderly and ill people during the evacuation. Even cancer patients were evacuated and quickly were able to resume medical treatment. During such a challenging event, it is easy for us to think we are the only one suffering, and to not realize how many people are living on the edge of death due to their pre-existing medical situation and their suffering greatly exceeds our own inconvenience.

It was kind of you to help the Pakistani student, and he was smart to go to the Pakastani embassy. You understand why you couldn't help more people, you would never leave your own child behind while you took a stranger into your car. It is a heartbreaking choice, but a clear choice. You were lucky because you didn't encounter violent people who pushed you and your children out of your car so they could get in. There were adult men who were doing that very thing to Ukrainian women with small children at the train stations. Perhaps they didn't understand when the Ukrainian train conductors explained in Ukrainian, these trains were devoted to evacuate Ukrainian women and children, particularly the families of Ukrainian soldiers. There was a concern Russian-paid operatives were already in Ukraine who would attack the families of Ukrainian soldiers. This is also one of the reasons for extra-tight border controls during this war. I don't know if you are a citizen of Ukraine or another country, but wherever you are, I'm glad you were able to escape and take your family to safety. So many Ukrainian women are trying to support their children in a foreign land, while their husbands and fathers are fighting and dying, and their country is being destroyed. Their pain is incredible, and yet I seldom see them complaining or whining. This is how they have won the hearts of the Polish people.

@@cherylk.2474 I stayed in Poland for 10 days with my family. I am a permanent resident, wife and kids are Ukrianian citizens. I wouldn't have gotten out as a man in his thirties if I was a citizen. Weirdly enough, I only submitted my application for citizenship months earlier and was supposed to pick up a supporting police report for that application on the morning of February 24. Needless to say, that plan didn't work out. While in Poland, we were hosted by the kindest family in a village called Kack near Warsaw. In Poland, then Germany, and now in Canada, I did meet (and continue to meet) a lot of women with children trying to navigate this new life, some without knowing any English or even having recent job experiences. It is not uncommon for women to be homemakers in Ukraine (my wife is), which in itself is more than a full-time job only it is unpaid. All of a sudden, these women have to navigate the labor market in a new country using a new language. I can't imagine the level of strength that requires.

You and your family are also under a horrid amount of stress and I'm glad you made your way to Canada. Life as a homemaker is unfortunately greatly disparaged in the west, but having grown up in a home with a mother who was a full-time homemaker and a Polish father who was a professional, self-employed man, I know I was among the fortunate children in the world. We didn't buy all the new clothes, or toys, or stuff, but we laughed a lot in our happy home, and I have wonderful memories and loving sisters. Today, families seem to be under so much pressure. I have a niece who is able to work from home, and this reduces so much stress for their family.
