My wife and I found nearzero a couple years ago. We were looking for some summertime sleeping bags/quilts. We ended up buying 2 of the "quilts" Dan had on this trip. We still have them and they are surprisingly good! At the time they didn't offer as much as they have now. We did end up having a zipper issue with one of them. The guy was awesome to deal with. He replaced the entire quilt/bag and wouldn't let us send the old one in until we received the new one. Because of how awesome he was, I ordered a few other things from him! To this day, I'm still using the NZ0 stove and it works great! My wife and I still use the titanium sporks also. We have sent a few people over there that were new to backpacking. A couple had purchased a variation of the pack "deal" like Dan has. Not the all in everything one but some of the other variations. I can honestly say they have solid gear that will last! Customer service is amazing! I think anyone starting out should seriously look into what they have to offer. Not the lightest gear out there but definitely worthy gear to get someone started. Never used the NZ0 tent but by the looks of it, I think it and the sleep system would be the last things a new backpacker would have to replace as they get more experienced.
I'm a brand new backpacker whose slowly been collecting gear after way too much analysis paralysis. If I had seen the Near Zero bundle at the beginning of my research (January) I would have jumped on it. This was a really fun video, I enjoy watching you two compare and contrast gear and kid around. "Gills. Oh you can go underwater?" 😄
I wouldn't fret - you've done what EVERYONE does, and while the kit is pretty good for a first timer....kinda, its all knockoff. 800.00 more and you have the cream of the crop in gear. Either way, if you kept going you'd grow out of that kit pretty soon and spend just like you did. We're still looking for the Nemo (the character) among us who can buy once cry once. It might be a myth. As long as you're out there. peace.
I think this company could be a builders best friend for people that don’t have any gear you could refer them to that company and get everything you need. I love the idea!!!
I use the Nemo Dagger for my son and I. Fits two 25 inch pads perfectly! It’s slightly heavier like you said but it is a comfortable 2 person tent with two large vestibules and 2 doors so it adds a little extra weight. Love the Osmo fly. Water just beads off it and if you look closely and unzip from the top of the fly there are little vent poles to crack an opening. All around great tent.
The band is back together again! Love it! Also, I’ve got the new Nemo Hornet OSMO 3 person tent, which weighs just over 3 lbs. I’ve only set it up at home, but it is spacious enough for two 25” pads and a dog. The walls aren’t as vertical as your Dagger, but might be worth a shot.
I love the idea behind this fully packed kit for camping. It has a very good price tag for light weight gear. The only downside is a huge logo on everything 😅 Thanks for sharing.
What a great duo. That's such an interesting backpacking system. Definitely great idea for people who want to backpack. So weird seeing you without a Mystery Ranch backpack lol
I got that same carabiner in a Cairn box 4+ years ago. I use it as my main key ring and have loved having it. Used it many of times backpacking/camping. I just got back from a trip to Alaska and made sure to bring it.
Helinox Chair Zero is the absolute BEST!!! I've got a bad back, calf and shoulder so the Chair Zero is essential for me to enjoy my backpacking adventure without so much pain.
Eric, I’m happy to see your subscribers increasing steadily. Thanks for the video with Dan. One of my tents is a Near Zero and I’ve been pleased with it. It is just a bit on the heavy side compared to true ultralights.
I've been stoked to see all the support and the response! And yeah the Near Zero tent looks like a nice light budget option, even though there are certainly lighter options available.
I love the Near Zero tent and quilt! The backpack is a different design than I would go with, but I love how accessible they're trying to make backpacking for people! What I have from them is good quality, so far. Thanks for repping a small company.
I love that pack bundle and wish it'd been available when I first started. Wasted so much time, money, and cursewords on bulky junk that ended up in the trash after trips. Went to the site after this- love that you can customize the bundle.
I watch because you provide so much instruction for me. I lifted on and off for years in the military but didn't think I needed someone to train me. I attempted to summit Mt. Rainier in 2022 and found my muscle and strength was not up to it. For the last 18 months I have followed you, Eddie Hall, and Brian Shaw. You are the only one that teaches! I am 55 and my training results and purpose is completely renewed. I buy Cutler Nutrition sups exclusively now 😊 Thank you for teaching us!
My pack , as a newb...ONE day after Dan was in pic rocks!..was probably40 lbs.😬 All true about the news li!e me not knowing where stuff is stuffed. Shoulda got that pack! But I did buy the titanium spork.😁
Lol "banakulars' 😅 Someone pointed out how you say 'pillow' (not before I googled "palla, new pillow gear" lol) in another video and now I can't unhear the accent in all subsequent videos I watched. Love these comparative battle of the backpackers videos!
That fully packed and organized backpack is amazing! I have friends who are kinda hesitant to go backpacking with me because they feel overwhelmed when thinking of the gear they don’t have and have to get. Thanks for sharing!
can vouch for the tents. bought the 1p n it poured for 3hrs. totally dry. that prompted me to buy the 3p tent n same thing. rained hard all day. zero water in my tent. im sold!!
I bought my fiancée the titanium grayl for Christmas this year because we went to Mexico and I wanted to be prepped for getting water on excursions if needed. H le LOVES it. It’s great for hunting trips or cowboy camping.
I bought the Nemo Dagger 2p earlier this year and I'm happy to say that splitting the weight across two people works very well. It's so spacious inside that there's lots of room for two people to sleep.
Well done. I'm looking forward to more content. Watch both of you on your channels. Great content even for myself who has dropped back to lightweight gear and no overnight hikes but keeping a few survival gear things in my pack. Haven't done overnight in 3 decades.
I like how you choose comfort of ultralight, I’m planning to backpack shorter distances (less than 10 miles a day) solo with the Dagger 2P and a 2.5 pound sleeping pad, but everything else as ultralight as possible. Looking forward to your review of the Radix as I’m hoping it’s going to be perfect for those of us who want to go light but not ultralight at the sacrifice of comfort.
I have the Nemo Riff sleeping bag. I love not just the gills but the fact it is roomier. I turn all night and this gives me the room to spin like a top and not feel confined like a mummy bag. I don’t like quilts. They are too drafty. I may have to spring for that Helinox chair! Thanks Dan.
100% Zpacks arc haul guy since 2017 hands down. I have purchased and tried many backpacks, and sent all of them back or sold them and gone back to my Zpacks every time. Eric, you need to give it a go it’s worth every penny….. lots and lots and lots of pennies, but it’s worth all of them
I am glad you became a chair guy after being a never chair guy for a long time. Once you hike and sit in a camping chair after hiking a bunch of miles, you wonder how you backcountry camped without it (even if it weighs a couple of pounds).
Nah. In my youth, I was fine with no chair. As my back aged, I went to a back-support on-ground pad-insert chair. Now that I am in my 60s, a full chair (16 oz with footprint) is essential.
@@coachhannah2403I just turned 60 and have had 3 back injuries and anything I don’t absolutely have to carry is no longer coming with me. So, there’s no way a chair (even a “UL” Helinox) is making the cut! Going Ultralight has saved my hiking life and o can now go out on 5-7 day hikes with a base weight less then my empty 70L backpack from the 1980s!
I always enjoy you guys together what if you and Dan came up with a backpack system for beginners Or like an intermediate bag Like in video where you and Dan kind of fight over maybe What's the best sleep system And then do some testing together The Hanson Becker backpack
This tent door opening system at 10:52 is very nice, does someone know if it can be bought as accessory for other tents? Or maybe if there are 3D models to print?
I really like my Nemo items. I a dude but use the women’s long Disco 15 and fillo pillow. I have multiple blown discs but the room in the bag and head support from the pillow are excellent. I sleep some nights indoors in it because it’s so cozy.
NEMO products are attractive and well made, they feel luxurious and are very durable. I have been through rainstorms and I did not ever get wet in the Dagger or any other NEMO tent (I live in the arctic and spend most of the year in the Kunai by NEMO, its lighter than most 4 season tents). I like the Tensor but EXPED makes better mats if you live or backpack below zero. They are very insulated. I always carry a chair zero because the ground in Alaska is either frozen or wet mud. Its so light that it is totally worth it. I have bad hips and its better than a rock. Or mud or block of ice. Love both of your channels. Awesome stuff.
Everytime I think about upgrading to a few 2 person tents (we do a one person and a 3 person as a family), the weights make me stop. It seems unless I pay a TON of money, I am not going to save much weight. My 3 person is 4 lbs 4 ounces packed weight ( and I really love it so that doesn't hurt).
A few months ago, I suggested you to try the previous version of the Nemo Aurora 2p. It's a lot like the dagger, the main difference, I think, it's the osmo fabric and the weight. Nemo make such great tents!
The concept of titanium Grayl is kind of contradictory/weird. Using the "dirty" chamber to cook with even if you get it to boiling seems like it could cause an issue. Like if there's any pathogens or other impurities in the residue, especially at the top inside edge where the boiling water doesn't reach and/or it doesn't otherwise get hot enough. But it does seem useful to combine two items and be able to carry less though.
Such an intense, scary shared experience you two share. Wonderful to hear you laugh together. Speaking of gear, zpacks just came out with a new 2 person tent, the Offset Duo. Have you tried one yet? I’m dying for a review of it.
I haven't backpacked in a long time. Since my employer of 45 years paid for me to walk around in the woods, walking around in the woods on my time off lost interest. Retired now, and having been thinking about getting back into it after watching "The Codgers" on their current PCT hike, I found this to be an interesting "battle" between you and Becker. Since I no longer have much backpack gear, the Near Zero bundles intrigue me, although I might go with one of their less expensive basic bundles, since their full-blown bundle has several items that I already have, don't need , or would do differently... ...and Congrats/Best Wishes on your new solo endeavor; LIked And Subscribed!!
Contrary to what Dan said, I would argue that a new backpacker who buys a synthetic sleeping bag would be *less* likely to freeze because moisture management is an acquired skill.
Love the bins as part of your gear. I bought some 10x25s for the exact same reason. BTW, If you get a Prothonotary Warbler on the PCT, you're living right. Congrats on the new channel. Keep up the good work!
Love y’all’s videos together!!! I couldn’t pull myself together on that chair tbh. I’m rocking the 1lb flexlite because it’s much less in money and definitely a good one to add to a list to check out. For those looking at a budget chair. Well somewhat “budget”. NEMO definitely has nice stakes to say the least 👍 Great video bro! That $200 stove/purifier concept is a cool idea but man…. $200!
I love my Nemo Dagger Osmo. I have a Helinox Chair One and had decided if it ever broke, (it's still going like a champ!) that I'd pick up a Chair Zero, but now I think I'd replace it with the Chair Zero L instead. I'll already be saving some weight but getting a chair that will feel more similar to the Chair One (which I honestly have no complaints about) so thanks for showing that, I didn't even know it existed until now. I guess maybe if one of my kids ends up needing a new chair I could do the whole hand-me-down self-justifying psychology trick on myself too. :D I always enjoy both of your guys' content so thanks for doing it! Which part of the PCT were you on? I live in Oregon and it looks like it was either northern California or Oregon.
I also wondered about the location and I'm in Oregon, too. By the looks of the ground cover and trees (and snow cover in the background and temperature when this was shot in June/July), they're somewhere north of OR Hwy 20 and south of WA Hwy 12, but could be up to I-90. In the final shot there's a mountain profile just above the green slope behind them. The mountain has bare volcanic rock and snow patches that are sloped similarly to a glacier, so from the PCT that says Jefferson, Hood, Adams, Rainier. It could be out of the Columbia Gorge, too. Anyway, fun doing a little local OSINT lol
The near zero bundle seems an odd offer. On face value it looks a good deal/idea. But then how many people wanted a full kit on day 1. Most I imagine went with a friend who did cookset and tent. People starting out will also just go to their nearest store than find some niche company online for all in one. Just don't see a market for it even if a kinda neat idea.
The Waymark pack is a lot lighter, but definitely less comfortable. I got a hot spot on my hip from lack of padding and sore shoulders on day two, which doesn't really happen to me on the MR pack. I'm still hoping MR can make a lighter pack cuz that's definitely their drawback. But they win in a landslide for comfort.
Odd the Nemo tent is 4 pounds. My Nemo 2P dragonfly is only 2.8 pounds all in as trail weight. I have the older version too. I would like to go lighter but like the option to go without the outer shell when the weather is clear. Not copying but I see I have the grayl TI and Vargo bot HD like Eric too. Have had them both for a while and just have to be careful and use a buff as a pre filter on the Grayl to extend the filter life. Cannot backflush it but I find it faster and easier than sawyer or QuickDraw. Those that say the Grayl is heavy have not weighed their sawyer after it has been used and retaining water. I like to cold soak and the Vargo bot is a three in one pot. I can cook with it, cold soak, and it can be a liter sealed water container saving me from having to pack a third water container for those longer days.
For the price and weight how come not the Dragonfly 2P? You can shave weight on that to just under 3 pounds so even lighter than you’re talking about. Just curious if you have compared the two but still prefer to Dagger.
Thanks for the vids! I often watch you because you always give good, detailed reviews. I've been using a Gossamer Gear Gorilla 50 for a few years and it's still good and going strong. But, I'm wondering if I would be better going the heavier, comfort route as my legs are quite a bit stronger than the shoulders. I'm thinking of going for the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65 after watching your reviews. There are a lot of things that look really good about it. Now that you've been using a few UL packs, where do stand on the weight vs comfort thing? Right now, for a two to three night hike I'm carrying about 13 to 14kg (including food, water etc). Thanks for your advice.
If you're carrying 13 kg or less I think you can enjoy the UL style packs. But that's right at the crossover point where getting a heavier pack that focuses on comfort really starts to pay off. I still love me that Bridger pack and think people would be way more comfortable if they tried it out.
@@eric_hanson Thanks for getting back to me. I'm off on a 5 day, 100km hike along a mountain pilgrimage trail in Japan in October. I've lived here and looked out over those mountains for 10 years, and finally I'm getting to go over them. I'll be carrying around 14kg for that hike, so if I can afford it, I'll give the Mystery Ranch a go. Thanks a lot for your advice and the excellent videos. I really value and appreciate your opinion.
Would love to see you review a Kifaru pack system. I use them for Elk hunting and they are bomb proof and fully customizable. USA made too for the win.
Correct me if I’m wrong because I don’t know if I fully understand the grayl system… but is there any concern using the “dirty water collection” part of the water bottle to then turn around and cook with it later? Or since it’s assumed that you’ll just be boiling water in it than any viruses/protozoa will be eliminated through boiling
I feel like ultralight should take into account, one’s size. I’m 6’9” and not totally out of shape, around 300lbs, so a little heavier than LeBron James. I have to buy everything on the larger end, which means more weight. I really like having a backpacking chair, but a helinox’s weight rating doesn’t cover me… well barely. The Helinox site says 320lb weight capacity, and weighs 2.2 lbs. I ended up purchasing the Onetigris portable camping chair 04, which says it’s got a 660 lb capacity and only weighs .5 lbs more… to make up for the extra weight, I’m saving up for a Durston X-mid pro, but the wife will probably divorce me afterwards, so I’ll be living in that. Hopefully it’s long enough to make the purchase worth while… a puffy is on my list too, but it needs to be extra long and that’s hard to find. Someone could make a ton of money making gear for tall folks. Just saying.
If you are going to drop that kind of money, why not get the 2p hornet elite and cut the weight in half? 23:09, Dan is right. I just got an Arc Haul, upgrading from a 6lb Teton Grand 5500. The Arc Haul is well worth the investment!
It's good to see you and Dan together...and healthy. ❤

What water filter came with the zero gear?
Just found you & love the 2 of you together.
Thanks for the video! ❤
Such an intense, scary shared experience you two share. Wonderful to hear you laugh together.
Speaking of gear, zpacks just came out with a new 2 person tent, the Offset Duo. Have you tried one yet? I’m dying for a review of it.
I haven't tried it yet, but I hope to! And thank you!
I love these battles 👍🏻
Eric: Recently got the ULA Catalyst myself. I'm kinda diggin' it.
Thank you so much! Glad you're here
Contrary to what Dan said, I would argue that a new backpacker who buys a synthetic sleeping bag would be *less* likely to freeze because moisture management is an acquired skill.
true, but also people tend to buy insufficient sleeping bags because they don't know what they're looking for.
Guess you can afford a $200 water purifier with all that old tv $ haha awesome video, you and Dan are great together btw
Eric I like yours better. However Dan’s is a good start for beginners. Great video. Thank You
Love the bins as part of your gear. I bought some 10x25s for the exact same reason. BTW, If you get a Prothonotary Warbler on the PCT, you're living right. Congrats on the new channel. Keep up the good work!
Love the vibe between you guyz !!! i would love to meet you on the trail !! my wife said I'm the french canadian version of Dan becker loll
So you're Dan Quebecker?
@@eric_hanson hahahahahahahahahaa !!
Suprised how you know your canadian province! 👍
Usually Americans know that one. ❤
Hey Mike! I really do love that chair! And the Grayl! But yeah 200 hundred is steep!
Eno needs to make a light weight version of their lounger. Camp chairs without arm rests I can’t do. I would consider the Helinox.
'everything is literally labelled'
my new favourite 'literally' quote
Eric ... Curious how the Waymark backpack compares to your Mystery Ranch Bridger backpack? ... Love to hear the pro(s) and con(s) of each ...
Gorgeous location!
For the price and weight how come not the Dragonfly 2P? You can shave weight on that to just under 3 pounds so even lighter than you’re talking about. Just curious if you have compared the two but still prefer to Dagger.
I was thinking the same thing
congrats on the new channel
So it comes with all this stuff in there? Tent sleeping pad cooking pot and all?
I dont like ultralight packs bc the backs are not breathable :/ no ventilation=sweaty back= fatigue. I love traditional but thats just me!
The gear gods unite 🙌
You guys are great together.
We have fun together!
Eric, is there going to be a review of the WayMark pack on your channel at some point? I'm really curious to hear your thoughts in detail!
Glad to hear you're interested in that pack. I'm going to do a multi-pack review video soon that'll include the Waymark.
Would love to see you review a Kifaru pack system. I use them for Elk hunting and they are bomb proof and fully customizable. USA made too for the win.
They got me... they had some specials and I sprang for the Ti press... and then another special I ended up with the larger plastic.
nice! I think you'll like em!
You are correct, as long as you bring the water to boil you're good for cooking.
Big fan of Maven products. Much better quality for the price point than what you would expect and great customer service!
Cool, now I need to find a way to get that titanium purifier in Canada. So much for my savings account!
Dan the influencerrrr😎 u guys make a cool team!
What pants are your wearing Eric? They look great and comfortable.
PS: LOVE my UV umbrella. Can be mounted on my pack to be hands-free. Sun, rain, snow, sleet do not faze me. ☀️🌧️❄️
I like your big hat for sun protection. It gives you that Indiana Jones look.
My favorite comment!
I love you two together
haha thanks! We like making fun of each other.
We need a Big and Tall for outdoor gear!
Not a bad idea for newbie backpackers.
Eric are you using a foot print with the new tent?
no. I rarely bring a footprint unless I'm going into a particularly muddy area or an area with lots of sharp rocks and things.
If you are going to drop that kind of money, why not get the 2p hornet elite and cut the weight in half? 23:09, Dan is right. I just got an Arc Haul, upgrading from a 6lb Teton Grand 5500. The Arc Haul is well worth the investment!
Eric. What brand are pants you are wearing in the video?
These are my Fjallraven Keb Agile trousers and they're my faaaavorite.
Where are you guys?! Is that WA? Absolutely gorgeous!
This was northern Oregon on a section of the PCT just south of Washington.
