12 years ago I embarked on my first ever backpacking trip - but it didn’t go according to plan. Now, all these years later, I have returned to White Oak Canyon in Shenandoah National Park to recreate my first backpacking trip and do it right this time. I have over a decade more experience, way better gear, and firm plan to finish this trail the way I originally intended 12 years ago!

My first backpacking trip was so horrible. I probably only went 5 miles with heavy gear. I couldn’t feel my legs when I took off my pack. I was cold all night and couldn’t wait to get home. I improved and hiked the entire AT at 65. This year I am section hiking the PCT at 70!
65 here and did a solo unaided hike of the Laugavegur Trail in August. I’m looking at section hiking the PCT next year. I would love to hike the AT but family commitments make that impossible right now. I recently built out a full campervan , so interested to follow your camper/boat project. Thank you!! 💚 I certainly shake my head at some things I’ve done in the past when it comes to backpacking. I went through a period of time (right around the level of experience where I knew just enough to think I knew everything 😅) where I was highly judgmental of myself and of other backpackers/hikers. I think it took me making some serious mistakes and a whole list of bad decisions that I regretted to outgrow that. It’s a lot easier to stop judging ourselves when those mishaps offer such a clear path for growth.
Man, you almost made me tear up when you were in the tent talking to Little Miranda. So nice to be able to look back and see how far we have come and also appreciate where we have been. Big love ❤
I love that you’re revisiting trails you’ve done in the past; such a great concept to see how much you’ve grown. Also, the Adidas Terrex are my go-to’s as well when the trail’s wet or muddy. They’re fantastic for both cold and wet terrain/weather without having to wear a boot.

As someone who has finally gotten up the courage to do my first backpacking trip, in no small part because of you Miranda, I adore this video idea. Here’s hoping my trip goes well, but even if it falls more into the type 2 fun category, it’s going to be awesome to get out there and have the experience

Just wanted to mention that it's not always the size of the shoe that's wrong, but it can also be the general shape of it. A lot of shoe brands, even those who make hiking shoes, base their shoes on lasts that don't even look like real feet. I've had little feet with wide toes and a narrow heel my whole life (more like how baby's feet look), which not even wide fits cater towards because those are only wide in the middle, where mine are not wide at all. So I had never been able to hike long distances because my toes always hurt so much from being squished, with loads of blisters and general shooting pain after a while.
Until I found actual foot-shaped shoes. Now I'm able to hike for days on end with no pain at all, I feel so liberated. I personally like to search for barefoot shoes, but not the ones that are flexible and thin because I like a solid shoe for hiking. The Bär Bergkomfort shoes are now my favorite and only hiking shoes, and I use Lems for around camp or when travelling by van.
Oh my goodness I haven’t been able to find shoes that fit my narrow heels and wide feet. I’ve tried SO many. Thank you!

First backpacking story: buddy and I hiked three miles in south Florida carrying a nine pound ozark trail tent, a pillow from home, backpack full of batteries for the 3 or 4 flashlights we brought, three hatchets and steak chunks/cookies for dinner. We had no skewers to cook our steak and SLEPT WITH THE COOKIES IN THE TENT 😓💀
And we did it all in Walmart steel toe boots. Boy did we learn that day

Definitely overpacked for my first backpacking trip in the Adirondacks. I can remember being jealous of the lightweight hammock one of my companions had - so much so I got one years later.

Amazing trip and what a demo of the xmid! Your leaf watercolor drawing is very well done! Just a tip as a long time artist it’s very bad to get into a habit of dipping brushes into containers that are used for personal consumption like you did w the nalgene lid. While you may be using nontoxic colors at this time you never know as your skills progress and you get better colors there can be some w toxic pigments and you will have a bad habit to break. Even when I paint and keep my drink separate from my water containers sometimes you reach in the wrong direction and stick a brush into your beverage. Then you have to chuck it out. Since you are a fan of GGG you may want to pick up a Pika folding bowl for your travel art kit so you will never have to worry about contamination from art pigments in your drinking water. The Hyklyf Pika bowl is nearly weightless and perfect for a backcountry art kit.

Miranda, your videos never dissappoint - love your humor! You have been part of my inspiration to get into backpacking. This past summer i completed my first backpacking trip, female aged 44, solo. It was only 1 night and close to home (Wallace Lake), but it was a test for me. It was empowering to go out and do it for me, by myself, after years of catering to my family.

I also had the chance to revisit my very first backpacking trip recently. At the time I didn't know enough to realize how little I knew about backpacking, compared to my car camping background. Love how kindly you talk to your past self.
What a fun and interesting video .. Definitely over time ,, backpacking has evolved greatly ... learning what works for you takes at least a few trips to use or not use and question the need to pack in the future ... For everyone on trail has a different reason for being there and sometimes the excess carried is because of the unknown ,, limited or no skills ,, realizing that hiking is so therapeutic that some of the items packed to fill idle time only added weight ... ... A big "Thank You" for showing the clearing of the forest floor to use your cook stove ... This is a pet peeve of mine ,that most hikers don't take the mere seconds to prevent a forest fire ... and campfires put out COLD to the touch each night when going to bed ,,and when leaving the campsight ... Far too many campfires left smoldering if not full on burning .... Thoroughly enjoy your energy and positive attitude in showing the beauty of our lands ..
My first backpack trip was as a boyscout. I was maybe 14 ish. We made wooden pack frames, used out tube tents as a tarp, put all our gear on the tarp and lashed it to the wood frame with cordage. It was similar to paracord as I recall. We used a diamond hitch to hold the gear to the frame. I remember seeing a few of my buddies having gear come lose and having to repack along the trail because they didn’t secure it properly. I remember suffering with the weight. And poor sleep with insufficient sleeping bags and no sleeping pad. This was in the 60’s. Gear then was not what it was today. But I remember loving it overall.
Yep, we made our own frames out of wood, late 60s. When those aluminum frame packs appeared soon afterwards, what a revelation. And then ripstop nylon and the beat goes on. My eyes bug when I see the new stuff, but I doubt there's ever been a moment like those lightweight aluminum frame packs.

my first backpacking trip was a solo overnight! it was at negwegon state park on Michigan’s east coast. it started off with me driving to the trailhead through 10 miles of sandy two tracks with about 4 feet drifts. my bosses parents hiked in with me and my dog and while it was beautiful, i picked the totally wrong time of year to go! it was SUPER buggy and i was getting eaten alive the entire time, and didn’t pack a long sleeve (or bug spray because i was afraid bears would smell me LOL) as we were in peak heat. i set up camp on the southernmost point of thunder bay and it was off a beautiful rocky beach that all of the swans came into at night to sleep, absolutely amazing! despite all my precautions, my dog did end up with a tic, i had diarrhea from anxiety, and we hiked out the next day at warp speed due to the bug issue 😂
My first backpack trip was not too bad…..or so I thought. Over the years I have definitely worked to get my pack lighter. I have to say though, videos like yours helped make the first trip not so bad. So much more information out there that is right at our fingertips then there was 12 years ago. Great video! Fun to see a hike down memory trail. 😁
Great vid. You've got an X-Mid2, right? You need to look up. There are pockets on each peak (which are awesome for watching something in the tent while laying, and they hold plenty (I put my flextail or a headlamp in there to use as a lantern). 4 pockets isn't too shabby.

I too have bent a Durston tent stake. I've gotten some MSR mini Groundhogs as replacements.
I did my first backpacking trip with borrowed gear. I went hammock camping in the snow with no underquilt. It was a life changing experience, and I learned a lot. Now I have my own hammock with proper insulation, and I'm excited to keep going.

My first backpack packing trip was in Lost Creek Wilderness, CO (32 miles). After several bad decisions I can definitely see my re-creation of that trip much differently. I look froward to redoing it hopefully next year (before I am too old to backpack) haha.

You brought back old memories. My first backpacking trip was back in the 1980s. I started in Canada through United States down to the bottom of Mexico and then a few months later I came back home. I bought all good quality gear and everything went well. It was real interesting seeing parts of the USA and Mexico was a big surprise for a Canadian who had never been out the country.
Oh my! I did that loop nearly 50 years ago and several times after. Hiked the lower part of White Oak Canyon with friends during a reunion trip this past April. Very cool to see a video on this loop. Thanks, Miranda!

My first trip was Eagle Creek, in Oregon when I was 21. I am now 70 and section hike portions of the PCT whenever I can. I just subscribed to your channel and love your enthusiasm and passion for the outdoors. 👍🥾

I love that you went back to recreate a bad trip. I had plans to do the same this year but a sprained ankle kept me at home.... always next year though!
I also started my backpacking journey with an REI half-dome, and just got a Durston X-2 mid. For what it costs, it’s an awesome value - I actually haven’t slept in the Durston yet, but my half-Dome leaked profusely after only a year of relatively light use. Not great.
Considering it only costs 50% more, and weighs less than half as much, I’m pretty stoked to try the Durston!
I actually really liked the REI tent; it was easy to set up, relatively lightweight for the space, and functional. But camping year round in the PNW, being waterproof at all times is a pretty essential feature..
How beautiful Shenandoah National Park is ! I have done many hikes but never over night. Looks beautiful to wake up to 👌🍊👍

freshest content around!! i love revisiting trails, in fact i love to get to know an area intimately and notice how it changes; am fortunate to live near a fun trail system w/in a moderately sized park with many features. i love to camp year around there and take different approaches to designated campsites. it is always to good to shake things up, bring different gear... thanks for filming your experiences- great video 😻

Thank you for sharing that you were scared during your first backpacking trip. My 1st one I was with dog and I was so scared I didn't sleep and kept the light of my headlamp on all night. My dog had more sleep than I 😅. But at the end I loved it and excited to go again.
I've spent some time in and around the Shenandoah Mts, but have never hiked that trail. Definitely will have to check it out sometime soon.
Aw, this video made me really happy, Miranda. Just seeing you reliving a memorable experience with the benefit of wisdom gained through years of practice. My first backpacking trip was in the early 80s at Camp Fire Camp in the Oregon Coast Range. My backpack was an old Scout pack from the 60s or 70s, external frame, bright orange. They didn’t have women -specific packs back then 😂 My sleeping bag was a giant cotton car camping bag stuffed in a black plastic garbage bag. We cooked over a wet Smokey fire. Our shelter was a big sheet of heavy black plastic held up with sticks. There was a huge thunderstorm overnight, and everyone’s shelter fell down except ours. We washed our pots in the creek using gravel to scrub them out. We wore jeans and cotton sweatshirts. Things have sure evolved over the years, but those early memories are sure special.
Also, I love that you brought your art supplies. Nature journaling can really enhance our enjoyment of a trip. I recommend checking out the John Muir Laws Guide to Nature Journaling, as well as his fabulous website and TH-cam videos.

Awesome! Made me very happy. My first thought wad “You have a White Oak Canyon in the Northwest too!” Then you mentioned Shenandoah and the AT. I know that loop well and I also camped in a forbidden area not knowing I shouldn’t, the intersection of the road and the falls. I have 2 Durstans. I have to say your first pitch was outstanding. I got the kit to pitch just the inner and am looking forward to a clear moonless night on an open ridge line. Also, I just upgraded my older Flash 55 to the new, $100 off in the garage section of REI.
Wonderful! I did my first solo overnight on Jeremy's Run very near White Oak Canyon and spent the entire night listening for the bear pulling down my poorly hung food bag. Glad your recreation was enjoyable. Miranda, you are inspiring!
This is such a great idea, and now I want to go back and recreate my first trip too! I would love to see you taste test some cottage brand meals and snacks. I’ve seen them online but am nervous to commit and buy them without some good reviews!

Way to go Miranda. I have not yet solo camping 🏕️ but you sure are inspiring me. I even save your pack list to guide me. I am planning to do first a day hike, and then my first overnight solo hike. I always love camping 🏕️ and hiking 🥾 but no one ever wants to go with me. There have been times I have gone with others hiking trips with other but they no longer live by me. I have three major parks I can go, so I kinda do a little bit of dream planning of places I want to hike ( some of them are places you have been). So one day I will do a solo trip and will send you a pic. Keep inspiring people to get out and enjoy the wild.
I'm 38 born and raised in Montana doing all types of hiking and camping. My wife and I went on our first backpacking trip this last summer, and we are hooked. Our packs were heavy (mine 50lbs hunting pack), so I'm definitely saving for a pack and Shaving some weight. But we can't wait to get back out and eventually do some section hikes. That was so fun and on such a gorgeous trail! Cedar Run-Whiteoak Canyon was our favourite hike in Shenandoah when we lived in MD and, yeah, that fire road is a miserable way to end such a glorious hike. I'd definitely do the AT extension now! We did it in the reverse direction so we got to see all the waterfalls as we climbed back up to Skyline Drive. It's beautiful in October when the fall colours are at their peak but it was nice to see some leaves still on the trees by your camping spot.
I'd love to revisit my first backpacking trip (Della Falls on Vancouver Island) with a lighter pack and a better understanding of how to pace myself. That would definitely make it more enjoyable. Oh, and I'd pick a less buggy time of year too...!

My first backpacking trip was a 50 miler when I was in the Boy Scouts. It was around 1978 or 1979. External frame pack of course. Heavy leather boots. I remember realizing that I could shift the weight more to my hips, or more to my shoulders depending on how I had the hip belt adjusted.
I've been know to pack out a corn muffin or two from cracker barrel. Sometimes 6 corn muffins and butter pads
Your first backpacking experience reminds me a bit of mine -- from being paranoid about bears, not sleeping well, to finding the hike tough (I also overpacked my bag!!) I went home and told my mom about it and it must have just been 20 minutes of me complaining. I had rented or borrowed all of my gear, because I was nervous to commit. I had mixed feelings about backpacking. But sure enough, about a week later, I started buying my own gear and planning my next trip. My mom was shocked! I now have enough gear to fully outfit another hiker who has nothing and I have a bunch of gear to share for those that have some. It helps when making that leap to giving it a try. I don't backpack as much as I would like, but I look forward to it every time.
My first trip was for a ski patrol mtn. travel rescue course about 6 years ago. My pack was way too heavy, I packed way too many clothes and gear. The lowest it got that night was -5 F.
It was so much fun, and I learned a ton. If I had watched all of the videos over the past 6 years before then I think my pack would have been at most 30lbs including food and water. My sleep system would have been more dialed in, of course the one I had wasn't bad, just heavy. The only time I got cold was putting my frozen boots back on in the morning. I've learned so much since then and look forward to more adventures this winter.
My first real backpacking trip was just over two months ago. I had done some day hikes, a group hike, and then an overnight shakedown hike, before venturing out on the Appalachian Trail. I have a few pieces of gear from REI, but the majority of the big items i had purchased through AliExpress. Everything else came by way of Amazon or Walmart. I had great weather for the duration of my hike. Rain was called for on Saturday (the middle of my trek), but with just a light drizzle in the morning, I set out to see how far I might get before the rain ratcheted up. It didn't increase until that evening after I had gotten to a shelter. Most of my nights were in shelters so I didn't get much experience with my tent, but the night that i did, it served me well. I had debated about doing a bear bag versus a canister, but chose the canister in spite of the additional weight. I had bear boxes where i stayed each night so it was an easy way to safeguard my food. I had spent a career walking everyday, but most of that was fairly flat. Carrying mail is no comparison to backpacking, but I think my feet were well prepared. TH-camrs like you and Dixie have been great sources of info which helped immensely in my preparation. I had one day of mismanagement of my water, but that was a lesson I will remember well. All in all, for a 66 year old man who had never been backpacking before, I enjoyed the journey (110 miles form central PA to Harper's Ferry), and managed it a day faster than initially planned. I am looking forward to more of the AT...maybe the rest of it in the coming year. If you're coming east in 2024, maybe we'll run into each other out on trail...
First backpacking trip-and I survived. Desolation Valley Wilderness. My brother handed me a map and a route. Told me if I was at x on such and such a date he’d see me. His girlfriend and I did this. Here are the mistakes. We hiked north to south in June, which meant climbing bad snow. Lost the trail and traversed at waterfall over a snowfield-so dangerous in so many ways. Made it to the meet up spot and my brother left a note in rocks piled on a large boulder😙. Hiked out lost the trail again and my compass. Made it to the end and had the best PBJ sandwich in the world. Pretty sure my hiking companion never camped again. Me-well I was 20/then and this year I turn 70. I can tell gear now is soooooooo much better. Just did I the Wind River Range Cirque of the Towers this last summer with my 2 dogs and a different brother😜
Oh man, my first ever backpacking trip was an overnight in Hoosier National Forest. Definitely not the same type of terrain we find in the PNW. In many ways it's easier there. I had a friend that introduced me to the activity and he helped me with gear. But I didn't listen to him about packing, not over packing and I'm pretty sure my pack weighed over 40lbs. I also used a hydration bladder, blech. My gear has evolved a LOT since then. I too am a huge fan of GGG, and a Durston tent is on my list to get in the near future, maybe. I bought a much less expensive Lanshan 1 to see if I even like trekking pole tents before dumping serious $$$ into yet another tent. It's been an amazing adventure though and I wouldn't trade the lessons learned for anything!
I love the silicone long spoon, I use it all the time as the designated camp cook.
My first backpacking trip was with a metal external frame pack I got at a thrift store. I went solo to the Black River Falls State forest in WI, hike in 2 miles, camped in the rain, found something like 10 ticks crawling on me and my gear, woke up to more rain and more ticks, noped right out and didn’t go backpacking again for years. Fortunately, I rediscovered backpacking in my 40s and just completed 3 separate 2-3 day trips on the Ice Age Trail in the spring. Glad I went back and tried it again!
My first backpacking trip was in October! I knew I was taking on a big task, but I hiked 42.2 miles over 2.5 days from the start of the PCT to Mt. Laguna. Before this hike the longest I had done was 14 miles in a day. On this hike I did 15, 12.5, and 14.5, going from 10 AM Friday to 3PM Sunday. It was the hardest physical thing I ever did and showed me just how far I could push my body. The weekend I requested off also ended up being during a heatwave with 88F highs, which was brutal.
This trip was also my second time using my Durston 1P. I got my Stargazer kit a few days before I left and it was AMAZING! Both nights I fell asleep watching satellites and shooting stars above me!

Although an avid day hiker, I really wanted to give backpacking a try. Researched gear and planned to hike with a friend in Rocky Mountain National Park in mid June. All good right, no, my buddy backed out at the last minute and I was on my own. The hike to Sourdough was uneventful, but on arrival I got an appreciation for paying more attention to the rangers when they advise of snow at that elevation. After blazing a trail using an offline map, I arrived at the campground which looked nothing like a campground. Eight foot drifts, no campground marker (I later determined it was covered by 4’ of snow) and no bare ground. So, I set up my tent for only the second time and by this time my feet are wet and cold. Now, my original plans were to do some exploring but after downing a sandwich I ended up inside the tent trying to warm my feet. So much for trying out the stove and other equipment. The night was spent mostly sleepless and two nights cut to one, I hiked out the next morning. Now, you might think this experience would cause me to throw in the towel. However, at 66 I figure I have to give it another shot, this time maybe in September. 😂

Love this! Thanks to video's like this one i discovered I was wearing shoes way too small for me. I bought a pair of xero shoes a whole size bigger than what I normally wear and they feel amazing!
It’s a TOTAL game changer!!! I remember quitting a hike when I was nearly at the peak because my feet had swollen so much I could barely walk. I had to wait for the swelling to go down to hike out!! 😅 don’t miss those days.
