Great video man, I would love an explainer video on the meaning of each dial you're tuning to get it to look right. I know there are other tutorials out there but I'm really liking your style!
Bro, first of all, though you may feel you posted a quick "Lemme show how I use HLG3" video, you need to realize how much value you've provided to your audience. Stop underselling yourself but stay humble as you are. Keep it up bud, I'll keep an eye on your channel. Also, for HLG3, use color mode BT2020 to maximize the color gamut at the time of recording instead of Rec709. Once you're editing, you can covert to Rec.709. Also, if you want customized highlight readings, set your Zebras to +95 Lower Limit (this is a custom Zebra setting).
thanks so much for the kind words!! I have tried BT2020 but just didn't like it for my workflow! I might have to revisit at some point as I'm always wanting to improve my HLG workflow
When filming with these settings, what are we looking for in that metering for the highlights? You went straight from settings to editing the footage, but I'm stuck on the actual filming bit lol Since ISO and white balance are set to auto, I guess that just leaves shutter speed and aperture to play around with so when adjusting those is there something to be mindful of doing or not doing based on that metering?
You don’t look at anything aside from the metering being underexposed / over exposed. The only thing you play around is aperture because you stick the shutter speed at 2x the frame rate. If anything is blinking, that means you have something over it’s limit and is under and over exposed. Overall, you let the camera do the work for you with these settings. The camera will automatically expose for +1 on the metering. You can adjust the setting to suit what for your manual needs.

I think it’s the a7iii that I shot this video with. Most of the banding I think is the TH-cam compression but if we do push the 8bit footage, we’ll start to see the banding on our editing suite!
Most banding does come from exporting with codec H.264 which is 8bit only. It took me more than a year to get it right by using H.265 which is 10bit. 90% less banding issues since then.
