hey man... you can solve the wobbling mic, by clipping the red wire to the cuts in the round fixer. I hope I explained it well. english is not my first language.
That is so funny because I even contacted Rode later on about it to try to figure it out and they never mentioned it. Thanks for the tip my friend! I'll be doing that from now on :)
This was a great review! I had the Mic Go and hated issues I had with it. Your review sold me on the VideoMicro because I wanted something without a battery.
I wish you would post more videos, man. Your humor is a nice touch to the video. Detailed review, straight to the point, and actual testing experience on the product. Subbed!
Awesome. That's exactly what I needed to know. The $10-20 price difference either way is meaningless if the mic isn't reliable. Dead footage is dead footage either way.
Thank you so much for this video. I bought the Go and thought I was losing my mind because I didnt like the sound. Going to try the Micro next (for half the price). Thank you sir!
" we give each other early gifts, its just a thing we do .. I'm not going to get into that... ANYWAY"... LMBOOOOOOOO i literally liked the video just for that! ( and the content was great too!)
Thanks, you saved me actually I almost bought the Go. I’ve dealt with annoying sound interference/crackling issues with a lavalier mic I bought a while ago and gave up and started just using my cameras internal mic.. I think I need an upgrade from that now. But I’m not ready to invest in a Pro, i think since the videomicro is cost effective I’ll upgrade to that :)
To stop the mic bouncing...There is grooves on the the Video micro where you tighten the cold shoe to the camera. The Cable from the mic fits perfecting in those grooves.
Cody Wanner was right. People are using the Video Micro wrong. It have a little slot so you can put that red cable in it. So it is supposed to not bounce on your camera. Watch that video from Cody Wanner and you will understand me. Im talking about 2:44
hey man, nice review. To solve your bouncy problem with the micro, just stick the cord from the back into the round hotshoe attachment that comes with it. You see the little vertical slots? That prevents it from bouncing! :D Also, on the Go, the noise and wind comes from the back of the camera...Rode messed it up with the inputs and that's where the noise is coming from. You can use a tiny deadcat or make one yourself and stick it OVER the back of the videomic GO and it will work great. (to test this, blow around the mic and see where the problem is coming from, you'll see when you blow in the back it will sound like a jet fighter flying over)
Good video bud. I have a micro and was thinking of getting a VideoMic - won’t bother now. I used to have the Pro and found I had the hissing problem all of the bloody time, so I got rid.
Good video, just bought the VideoMicro as I shoot on a phone so didn’t want the interference - also I fly a drone regularly with the camera on set! Thanks for the tip!
Have you tried using the cable to stabilize the videomicro mic? there are notches in the set nut for the cold shoe intended for stabilizing with the use of the cable.
I had the exact same problem with the Go, that hissing sound!! And since I vlog I couldn’t use any of the clips which really annoyed me and led me to end up binning the Go. Disappointed because they’re not cheap. This has been the perfect comparison review. Thanks mate! I’ll be picking up the micro because I’d rather a microphone that worked 100% of the time with a few knocking sounds vs an awful hiss randomly 👍🏼👍🏼
I’ve used the micro in every video I’ve made since, mainly because it’s super inexpensive and small so it works. Maybe I’ll get a higher quality one later but it works perfect for me! Glad the video helped you out!
I know this is an old video, but if you read the instructions on the VideoMicro it tells you to hook the cord in the base, and if you do it will not flop around and you don't need any string to tie it back.
Brilliant video thank you - really useful. It sounds like the Go sounds slightly better/fuller - when it's working? I dont know which one to get for using indoors on a static setup.. but micro looks more reliable? Thanks again - subscribed!
PS I'm sure you already know this, but at 2:25 apparently the notches in the cold shoe mount are designed so that you can tuck the red cable into the notch, to stop the mic bouncing and hold it taut... so you can supposedly get rid of the twine? (Though it does look quite fetching!)
Good video I had the same issue with the video mic go, I turned off wifi router at my house and it fixed it but after watching your video I'm thinking the video mic cro is better cause there are wifi routers everywhere and I also had the problem one or two times when I was on location! good video, still provided relevant information almost 18 months later. I got the the Micro thanks to reviews like yours. If the wobbling is an issue with mine, I'll try to work up a 3D printed solution. If you're still using this mic by the time I get that done I'll send you a printed mount
Appreciate it! By the way, the wobbling is fixed by pushing the mic cord into one of the slits in the tightening piece. Someone else pointed that out to me and it works great!
Thanks for the review. I wonder if your experience with the Go is similar to others or if you happened to have a bad one? Have you spoken with others to learn this?
Great insight into the Rode mics. I'm going to buy the VideoMicro for use on smaller cameras and iPhone. You've probably worked this out by now but at the base of the mic is a notched wheel that's designed to take the cable. If you clip the cable into one of the notches it does the same as your twine in stabilising the mic.
is there any shotgun mic to remove background noise

Good video mate, thanks! I have a tip for you.. You dont need the string, Just put youre cable in one of the tracks on the round plastic sircle😉 That will keep it steady and not bounce. What sound rec. do you use? Manual or auto..
Thanks for your video I can make my decision now. I will go for the videomicro! I don't care about the wobbling, I will design a 3d printed fix for that !
Thank you for this video, it was just the comparison I was looking for. Nice touch to use a green coloured string on a red mic mount when it was a Christmas gift originally. 😎🎄
I don't thik you need the twine. The slots in the nut that tightens the mic in the hot or sold shoe are there to slot the power cord in, in order to stabilize the mic on its mount. The Videomic GO has a single in the bottom loop of the shock mount for the same purpose. Slot the power cord into one of those divots and your mic won't bounce anymore. If someone has already mentioned this, nevermind. Sorry.
very helpful review ! I just got the Gopro 9 and media mod and was wondering which of the two to buy. $60 vs $100 is not that much of a difference for me so i was willing to get the Mic Go. One thing that I did not like is that it is considerably bigger and I was wondering if it would get into the screen of my gopro, especially if i use the new max lens coming out soon. Second, your video helped me learn that not only would i have to worry about Mic Go coming out in frame, but also it picking up static and hissing from nearby routers and other tech. is that like commonplace? I would have to buy $100 mic go, $30 wind screen and risk it showing up on my video and/or having bad audio when i most need it? The video micro was the one I purchased
Hello friend, thanks for the nice video. I make only documentaries outdoors, to working people (ethnic groups in remote countryside). I'd like to understand the difference with an external Mic like the small Rode and without external Mic. I have a GH6 camera and its mic is good. I'm very very curious to know the differences between external Mic and with no external Mic. Can you inform me? Thank you.
An external mic (as long as it is good quality) is always better audio than the audio that comes in the camera. However, using camera audio can be just fine in many situations if you prefer the simplicity.

Nice review..👍🏼 I bought the Sennheiser mke 200 for 99€ I’m kinda bit feeling to returning it. I mean sound good lil’ crispy but less boomy quality, comparing with Videomicro with Boomy audio and sounds clear . Well Videomic Go a bit Boomy & Hisss sounds. but I guess I like most VideoMicro less price sounds good. among the Mke 200 and Videomic Go . Any advice ? Thanks to ur Vlogs t’was helpful.
Very nice video ! I just have one question : did you try to record with the VideoMicro placed on the camera’s hot shoe ? If yes, how did you manage to avoid AF noises ?
Probably getting ultra silent lenses
what kind of video will make the microphone swing so much? even if the microphone was firm, the video would be horrible ...
shake the camera and see if the microphone will shake so much?
Hey, Josh I am thinking about getting the micro. Your video is from 2018. Do you have any new suggestions before I purchase? Thanks!
Also, how do you only have 305 subs.. You deserve more!
Hey! Sorry for the late reply, I stopped doing TH-cam for a while. The Video Micro is still my favorite and I use it in every video that has a need for an external mic.
Micro has more background noise and also giving more hight frequency sound.
I can hear a bit more, yeah. For me the main issue was the weird sounds and audio issues I would get from the GO
on the other hand, the GO is too bassy.
I was about to purchase RODE videomic Go , but after watching your video, I've to think again and again, seems like not a reliable option for me
Did you go with a different microphone instead?
@@JoshTheCollins No , I got video Mic Go and it's working fine for me . [ between I got china copy of that ] 😂😂
which mic would be better for loud noises? by that I mean because I record and go to car meets with supercars that rev their engines, so would any of these mics pick up distorted noises when peaking a high amount of dB?
I haven't had any issues using the micro for loud noises at all, I'd still recommend that over the GO
JoshinCincinnati ok ok thx!
The cord for the rode video mic should fit in the base. Preventing the mic from bouncing up and down
