- In this special episode of Next Question, Katie sat down for a rare one-on-one interview in DC with Vice President Kamala Harris in her ceremonial office at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. And there was a lot to talk about.
2024 is here at last, and it’s a monumentally important election year-one that looks more likely every day to be another Biden-Trump re-match. The political news has been heavily skewed toward the Republican side of the race, given the drama of selecting their nominee. Less has been heard from the incumbent administration.
But the campaign is heating up for the Democrats too. From abortion rights to the crisis in Israel and Gaza, shifting voter coalitions and where Biden-Harris need to really make their message sing, such as with Gen Z, this wide ranging conversation gets to the heart of what’s at stake this election year, and what the Biden-Harris administration is doing to make their case to voters.

The answer to the question about late term abortions should have been made crystal clear. Women are NOT walking into doctors’ offices and demanding abortions in the 3rd trimester on some reckless whim (and to suggest that’s the reason is profoundly insulting). Late term abortions are always due to severe abnormalities or extreme risk to the life of the mother. They are heartbreaking to those who have to face that choice.
If thats not the case then state your term. Pretty simple.

Roe v Wade provided absolute right to abortion in the 1st trimester only. So no, the feds are not involved in late term abortions (late term refers to pregnancies beyond 20 weeks - a full term pregnancy is 40 weeks by the way, so more than 9 mos). Per Roe, from the first athe second trimester on individual states have the right to impose their own restrictions. Overturning Roe meant that states now have the right to regulate/impose restrictions on a pregnancy any time and pretty much at will. In some states laws are in the pipeline to make leaving a state to seek an abortion illegal (similar to slavery-era fugitive laws ). Unsurprisingly Florida at some point was famously seeking to create a central database to track the cycles of certain reproductive age women as well (this was struck down). So no, women don’t just waltz in to demand abortions - and if there’s one at a later state of the pregnancy it’s because doctors advised it due to some pretty tragic reasons.

Katie, as a journalist, why didn't you ask her what the plan was for immigration? Not just say we had a plan but no one took it up. What's the most basic plan?

We were advised to abort as late as a week before my son was born. The pregnancy was "not viable". Long story short, my son is 19 years old, fully functional, not deformed and a 100% "normal" kid going through college. I agree with others opinion, and also agree with abortion in certain instances. The problem is my personal experience creates a huge "what if....?" As far as incest , rape I agree and leave that up to her.

Every supreme ourt hearing has been around roe vs vade and for VP Harris to say she thought roe was settled law is surprising. Dems had full house and senate and white house on their side and never codified roe at federal level. so Please dont yall act like you didnt see this coming.
The fact that she thinks they took away a constitutional right, it was never in the constitution and the Supreme Court can't change the constitution. There's just three branches of government and our VP should know how the powers are divided. Should know at an elementary school level at least.

After you answered the question then you should vote for whomever best fits your answer. Remember no matter who you vote for just get out and vote this November for the candidate with the best policies for you and your family. Wheater it's Democrat or Republican just make sure you get out and vote this November.
That’s a nice message. But I have to add-think larger than yourself. There are huge issues at stake. There’s you and family, there’s others in America, moving through people who want to come to America, membership in NATO and the UN, and on to environmental issues and the future of life on the planet. Vote for sure, but even stepping one ring beyond what concerns you and your family would make a difference.

Good interview. I am always bemused when I hear Kamala Harris speak about the fact that she is viewed so negatively in some quarters. I see an erudite, empathetic and intelligent politician who I wouldn't hesitate to vote for if I was an elector in the USA. That said our political set up here in the UK is nothing to write home about. However, it does matter to everybody round the world what happens this November.

I’ll be voting for Biden/Harris. But I appreciate your point. The Hamas attack was horrible. But treatment of the Palestinians looks like genocide to me. What I don’t hear about is the Palestinians being angry with their Hamas government for starting the direct conflict. That confuses me.

I don’t think I could ever have an abortion because I don’t know when a fertilized human egg becomes a person. But I’m very PRO birth control. But it seems like the movement called Pro Life is anti birth control, even though it makes the need for abortion much less likely. Why is this? Id appreciate a sincere answer.
