I just want to say that Celesteela isn't JUST based on Kaguya the myth, but also on Kaguya the japanese space probe! That's why it looks like a space princess but with design elements taken from both the traditional bamboo shoots the legend says she was born from, AND from futuristic-looking cannons and general aesthetic!
Is there a source for this? Because looking at the space probe, Celesteela doesn't resemble it at all, and the space connection was already part of 'The tale of the bamboo cutter', from which the myth of Kaguya originates.
You could also include Nihilego, which not many know are based on immortal jellyfish. There's even a vocaloid named LuMi based off it which shares the same colours and design traits as Nihilego (and Lusamine/Lillie). Additionally, immortal jellyfish have a red organ in their jelly, which actually looks like a human woman in some pictures, which inspired Ultra Lusamine lol.
SIDENOTE: Lillie looks like Nihilego rather than the other way round, because Lusamine probably dressed her that way. Lillie even says she was forced to dress that way by her

Okay, lemme share another example: Mimikyu!
Most people I've spoken to think that Mimikyu is only really based on bedsheet ghosts, but when I ask why it's a fairy type, those people can't explain. Because it's not just a bedsheet ghost, but also a changeling!
Changelings are fairy children swapped out for human children and raised by humans. I'm really fascinated by these pixies, because modern day anthropologists believe that legends of changelings were a way people used to explain unexplained conditions in children, including autism, and I happen to be autistic myself!

Its fine. Something that Truegreen fails to mention here is that in Japanese while Zigzagoon's species name is indeed "small tanuki pokemon", its Japanese name is "Zigzaguma" which is very clearly referencing "araiguma" (Japanese for racoon). So I think that with Zigzagoon Game Freak was going for a tanuki/racoon mixture.

What about Formantis and Lurantis?? People question their typing, but it makes sense cause they are the opposites of praying manti, being plants trying to look like bugs instead of bugs trying to look like plants
People aren’t wrong that it’s based of mantis’ that look like orchids, because that’s what it’s based on! They just reversed it, where it’s an orchid pretending to be a mantis.
I'm not saying Giritina is satan, I'm saying it takes MINOR inspirations. Really, it's only the six legs/spikes, six wing jewels, six neck spikes part.
Yeah, I think it's being too much of a semanticist to say that it's not based on the devil. Yeah it takes a lot of inspiration from Shinto beliefs, but that does not undo the clear Judaeo-Christian inspirations involved. It's honestly more closed minded to imply that it cannot be based on both. That's what's great about Pokemon, it can merge cultures so effectively and used just a single Mon to teach two different cultures a bit about one another. Acting like people saying Giratina is based on the devil are wrong or just imposing their own culture; is to miss out on part of why that trio rocks. It combines elements from several different religions, Pokemon has some level of representation from everywhere. The fact that a Mon like Giratina is inspired by all these different elements just strengths what Pokemon is at its core.
third gen legendaries are based on creatures of the old testament. Groudon=behemoth Kyogre=Levianthan and rayquaza=ziz. gamefreak doesnt relly only on shinto pantheon or legends

Great video!! I'm always interested in hearing about the origins of Pokémon designs, especially when they aren't as obvious or well known. I knew some of these already, but I always appreciate hearing the backstory of Pokémon designs and any mythology involved to understand the Pokémon more
Landorus in german is called Demeteros, referring to the greek godess of harvest, Demeter.
It also fits with it's pokedex entry, which states, that it fertilizes the lands and brings a rich harvest. This is just some trivia to give Landorus some spotlight.
That's actually quite clever considering that Landorus is based off of "Inari", the Japanese god of fertility and harvest.

But what about Aromatisse? People say its ugly and stupid when actually its really well thought out and its design makes perfect sense. It has influences from perfume bottles which explains its body shape, its dress like shape and ears are all based off cancan and flamenco dancers so that part makes sense. Its pale face resembles that of a plague doctor and its colour scheme is appropriate when you realise its based off a flamingo and its also a fairy type
So STOP THE AROMATISSE HATE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I've always wondered what Typhlosion was based off of. Plus I've always loved Zigzagoon and Tanooki Mario so it's nice to know that they are based on the same animal.

But we seriously need a raccoon Pokemon. Raccoons are some of my favorite animals. It would be part dark since, at least in my head, raccoons are mischievous scavengers. Hell, maybe that's how you find one! Like how you can find Crabrawler in berry piles or mistake an Electrode or Amoongus for a Pokeball, you can find this raccoon Pokemon in cities in trash cans and stuff.

Shinx sounds more like sphinx than it does lynx.
Shinx in shine+sphinx. Further calling any member of the Luxray line a lynx doesn't hold up much. Lynx have pointed, triangular ears with long tufts of fur at the ends and they have stumpy, bobbed tails. Shinx, Luxio and Luxray all have rounded ears and longs trails with extra fur at the end of their tails (a trait only Lions have)
They x-ray vision was inspired by legends of the lynx, but they're design was certainly not. Shinx specifically was based off of the dressing of the manga character Kimba the white lion which is where it gets its large head, rounded, big ears and that little while of fur ontop of it's head.

Another misunderstood Pokemon is Mightyena, a lot of people think its a wolf when its a hyena. It is based on the striped hyenas and they aren't even in the canine family.

I always thought of Giratina as a dark matter rather than antimatter pokemon. Dark matter is heavily influenced by gravity and is very influential on gravity. Time/space/gravity makes for sense, but a pokemon controlling it would create chaos. More to point to this is if Giratina was antimatter, he and the matter around him in the normal universe would annihilate on contact, and you would be dead from annihilating in the distortion world.

Also consider the Black Dogs of European folklore, supernatural entities sometimes aligned with ghosts or fairies and that served as omens of death. As Absol's body is grey-black, it appears vaguely canine, and it is thought of as a bad omen, these may also be a partial inspiration.
Thanks for the educational video, although some of these I knew, and had my own clues about, many don't, and don't care. My personal second pet-peve about Pokémon is that people don't seem to realize faerie doesn't mean good, most of the faeries of myth are actually evil, which makes its placement against dark rather stupid

You should do a part 2 involving the Chespin line, they're my favorite and the most misunderstood Pokemon regarding its origins and evolution lines.
Absol is based on the mythical animal Ron said it was, but something that might shock you, is that Absol actually also takes inspiration from wolves. Yamper, is also both a corgi and a French bulldog. We got hybrids going on here!
I REALLY hope we get an ACTUAL raccoon Pokemon one day. Hopefully, an Electric/Dark dual type line.
